I'm guessing here, but it also might be part of the software QA process. When we developed a games website, involving hundreds of thousands of users downloading and running java applets (games) that communicated with our back-end gaming servers and chat rooms, we had the game applets collect usage information, including things such as keystrokes, memory usage (and growth), call stacks when exceptions occurred, etc - sending this back to us during our testing and tuning phase. This gave us a lot more info than we could possibly have gotten otherwise and made it possible for us to release rock-solid products by the end of the development cycle.

This would be a great tool for RIM to use the same way I would think...
