I have the Desktop Redirector installed as well, however not sure if I need that if I am BES with full wireless sync....I pay £25 per month for the BES license and provisioning....
I have DM v4.3.0.17 which might make a difference. No you shouldn't need Desktop Redirector.

The device should have synced the (I think) last two weeks of mail when you did an EA. Perhaps check in Options | Advanced Options | Enterprise Activation then ALT+cnfg to see if Wireless Reconciliation is turned on?
