Won't use the GPS on Verizon Pearls...the GPS is locked and only works with VZNav...will NOT work with other nav software.

For GPS nav w/the VZW pearl you need an external Bluetooth GPS unit...

I've used GMaps 2.0 w/my Sony BT GPS, and it worked beautifully. In Satellite view, when I zoomed in, it had placed me in the actual part of my home I was sitting in. Pretty amazing, to me.

Using Tower-location (no GPS), it usually puts me about two miles or so away from my actual home (where I'm sitting) . One time it put me about 3/4 of a mile away.

With GPS, great. W/out GPS, for me, still more of a parlor trick. If I was on the road in a strange location and wanted to know where I was, I wouldn't feel I could trust it for much more than a very general sense of where I was.

But hey, it's more than there was before, and hopefully they can improve the tower location over time for those w/out GPS.

The "My Location" feature is very inaccurate on mine :/ Is there any way that I can make it so that it's more accurate?

No. If you are in an area with more towers it will be more accurate. For me it's 5000 meters. The blue dot is the cell tower.

I know it is inaccurate, but last night I was lost. I opened Google maps and pressed 0, and it got me reasonably close to where I was. From there I zoomed in and found my true location and found my way from there. I have an 8703e with GPS but it doesn't work with Gmaps. This feature was a life saver.

I did a search and it shows a tower only 2 miles away, however "my location" still puts me within 5000 meters...

Is it a SPRINT antenna/tower?

the phone is a vzw pearl 8130 (my g/f). does it have to be the appropriate carrier's tower?

In my case, it can be any tower but my BB wont show roaming.

You said there is tower 2 miles away but "my location" still puts you within 5000 meters, so it is either, not a VZW tower or, not a share tower.

I had googlemaps on my HTC Dash and it worked great (v.1).

However, when i installed googlemaps 2.0 on my new 8100, it wont open.
when i click on the app, the phone freezes up.

Can anyone give me advice on how to correct this issue?

Since you installed, have you:

- Done the battery pull dance?
- Checked permissions for the app and ensured they are all set to allow?
- Done an uninstall/reinstall
- Burned 10 grams of incense and prayed to RIM, the God of BB? ;)

Program works, my location works to 1700m on my Bell Pearl 8130, but it seems not to be able to use the internal GPS like BBMaps can. Anyone find a work around??

Only 88xx series GMM will work with the internal GPS. I think Google engineers still did not clue in that the 8130 series Pearl has an internal GPS. Therefore, you will need to download the 8830 version of GMM from here http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v1.6....30_v4_2_L1.jad (must use your phone to download OTA)

By the way, anyone have the JAD link for 8830 but version 2.0.1? I need a JAD link to version 2.0.1 for 8830, not some generic 2.0.1 MIDP 2 version that was posted earlier. Those will not work as they throw an exception at startup.

Oh and if you did not guess, I am with Bell as well.

Edit: For VZW users, you can try downloading the version of GMM posted above (again, download OTA), go outside, and start the app to see if you will get a single blue dot on the screen. You may need to wait a min or two, or restart the phone before trying. Use 0 in the app to go to your location. If however, this does not work for some reason, you guys do know that even if (and I am emphasizing a big "if" here) there is a way to disable (restrict the use to TeleNav or GPS Nav only) your internal GPS, that is done through software, and not hardware. So what this means is that you can install a non VZW version of the BB OS on your 8130 (e.g., Telus, see New Pearl 8130 OS 4.3.0.65 (Telus Mobility) released) and you should have no problem using your GPS.

Try it, I am quite certain that one of the two options will work.

Now, again, anyone got the JAD link to 2.0.1 for BB 8830?

Putting another OS on your Pearl will not unlock the GPS.

Are you outside with a clear view of the sky? It should work fine with GPS on the 8130.

I am a Sprint user w/ the Pearl 8130 and I was unable to even access the site. Are you sure that downloading this version for the 8830 will allow my internal GPS to work?

OMG, serriously, it is not that hard. On Bell, Telus, and POSSIBLY VZW the GPS on the 8130 WILL ONLY WORK if you install a version of GMM that was meant for a device with an internal GPS - therefore, 88xx series. No other GMM version will work with GPS on the 8130 with those carriers. What is so damn confusing about that?

I feel like I am trying to explain things to children, no offense mod. I am trying to contribute something useful to the community and I am being caught constantly on things like "oh but I don't need this for my 8310, my 8310 works fine with internal GPS" or in your case "[you] don't know what I am talking about"
