When I am at work, I get the message of "Your current location is temporarily unavailable". However, when I am at home or driving around, I get the info from "My Location". Not bad and not too far from the actual location (I only tested it twice thou).

Must pick them up somehow, or you wouldn't be getting anything.

Worked for me right from the install onward. I'm using 8700g and 4.2 on BIS. Only thing I can think of is stuff like application permissions and firewall
.
EDIT: Afterthought...... Are you guys even seeing the blue dot and uncertainty circle? If you are getting reception, then perhaps google has no data on tower location for some reason. But, heck, I really have no idea.

Just downloaded this on my very old 7250 thinking it wouldn't have the location feature, but it does! I'm in a rural area in my basement room and is way off (3-4 miles) but hey I can see my hometown! I just bought a 8830 and a gps bluetooth puck on ebay so better location here I come!

I am also using 8700g with 4.2 on BIS. I am NOT seeing the blue dot or uncertainty circle! I checked google settings and the myl: shows my location as a set of numbers. I just tried it from my house which is within 4500 feet of a TMobile tower. Same error "Your location is temporarily unavailable"

Any suggestions on what permission or firewall changes I could make?

EDIT: I disabled the firewall completely and set all the google map settings to allow and I still receive the error. I wonder, could it be because I am in a rural area. There are only 2 TMobile towers in my town. Can it work off of any carriers tower?

As I mentioned in previous post, "My Location" does not work in my office building but it works in my house. I get good reception for voice and EDGE. For some crazy reasons, it just DOES NOT work in my office. Oh well.

Mine doesn't work period. In office, out of office, in house, out of house.....

Same error anywhere I try it

UPDATE: I went about 45 miles over to another, larger city and it worked great. It was pretty accurate. I guess the town I live in is too small or doesn't have enough towers.

This is what makes me wonder if the problem is not on google's end and not the device.

I'm guessing that my location works through a google database of tower cell id's. If they don't have a tower's cell id cataloged then it won't work. Maybe that's why they get feedback on some of the location information. A gps enabled device would be able to report back to them the approximate location of a cell id. Then it could be cataloged. So based on what cell id your phone sees it guesses an area.

look for many carriers to bring up lawsuits against Google for this app. I'm not a tech wiz, but this is a security risk that Google is using to get your approximate location! they're not using cell towers as they say!

You have the option of turning off the My Location portion of the program if you don't want it.

If its not cell towers (as you state) and its not GPS, then can you add some detail as to what it may be? I am curious.

If it is not a cell tower what is it? When I was in Tucson last week I drove up to my supposed location and it was a cell tower. Easy to determine as there was nothing else at the location except rock.

I thought that the cell phone tower locations were public knowledge and something you could get from the FCC.

Always less than expected.
And now unimproved for 2008.

it is cell towers, Google have a database of MOST cell phone towers and triangulate a "rough" position based on these towers locations.

Its not a security risk and they will not be sued as google do not post these locations.

wrong and wrong...

1, its not a security risk as phone tower locations are public knowledge. The can be obtained by a simple freedom of information filing.
2, read this, Google Maps for Mobile adds 'My Location' feature - News - Mobile Phones

Folks thought that Google was collecting their phone records because Google Maps wanted access to the phone logs too....I don't think so.

Honestly, the only negative to GMM 2.0.1 is that it seems to drain my battery quicker if the app is installed. Even if you exit the app, the battery barely lasts 10 hours. I uninstalled it and battery life is back to normal. Strange... I always exit the app. Who knows, I'll give it another try once 2.0.2 comes out. I suspect it's just a small bug with the app not fully releasing hardware resources on exit.
