Default Gmail app 1.5 out! - 12-06-2007, 05:50 AM

Hey folks

I just discovered that Google released Gmail app 1.5 for BlackBerry!

It now supports notification on new mail (just perfectly implemented, Gmail gets its own entry in the Profile menu) among other cool stuff such as full access to your Gmail contacts and the spam folder.

I hope this has not been posted yet several times .

Good find! Just installed it and it works great. Nice incremental improvement over the last release. The Contacts function is a nice add.

Well it works great provided you are not using a Google hosted domain.

The program doesn't work with hosted domains. Boo!

Good to know. I was debating whether to move to Hosted Domain. Looks like another reason not to bother :(

FYI: By default it appends "Sent from Gmail for mobile" to your emails. You can disable it in settings. Don't know if this was in the last version as I never send from the app.

There's a different app that does work with hosted domains - lemme see if I can find that link...

Yeah I have the older app that works with the hosted domains, but I don't think it has the newer features of this ver. 1.5.1 does it?

Default Issue: LED keeps flashing - 12-06-2007, 09:40 AM

I just noticed an issue with the new notification feature:

When I get a new mail, the LED of my BB 8700 keeps flashing forever (i.e. until I hard reset it). Neither opening nor deleting the new message makes it go away.

Can anyone confirm this? It's not a huge issue of course as you can just turn LED flashing off but it's still a pitty not to have it as I really like being able to have visual feedback upon receiving messages.

Update:
Sorry, I lied. The flashing stops after some 5 minutes' time. This behavior took me by surprise because with SMS (as well as calendar events and to-do tasks), the LED goes out immediately after all new messages are read.

Can someone please explain to me why you'd use this instead of BIS?
I don't buy the keep emails separate thing. What else is there?

The only reason I use this is I have my BB set to delete email older than 30 days. If I Need access to a message that is older than that, I use the GMail app.

Otherwise, I don't ever bother with it.

When BIS is down (rare) it's nice to use this app so you don't miss anything.

Does this display html emails that BIS would otherwise have a hard time with?

Upgraded to the new version but it will not run. Previous version worked fine on my Sprint 8130 (didn't have to change any permissions or anything).

This one is giving me the error "Network Unavailable. This program requires a data connection, and some Blackberry devices require reconfiguration to work properly...."

I have coverage and 1XEV.

I do not think they could do HTML emails yet.

However, I believe they added the new mail notification in the profile.

The new version (for Google apps, not "regular" GMail) is not working for me either. It just hangs at "loading" in my inbox, but nothing ever loads and nothing appears to be happening (no data arrows).

Goto Options/Advanced Options/Applications then select Gmail .. Hit the BB Button - Select Edit Permissions .. And then change Connections to Allow, Interactions to Allow, and User Data to Allow ... Then hit the BB button again and select Save. Your new version of Gmail will now work just fine.

i downloaded it this morning from the gmail.com/app site. got the new version, but on my verizon BIS 8830 it's running slow....slow....almost slower than the old version. i have full 1XEV bars...yet still 8-10 seconds to send an email from the program, and when 'loading' or 'refreshing' messages in the gmail app home screen its super slow too.

but i've also noticed that my browser/instant message is going real slow too. is there a BIS outage/slowage that we are unaware of? hopefully so, b/c this new version of gmail is awesome and supposed to be so much faster and more efficient than the last one!

Gmail app is a great choice for anyone who does not have BIS. My carrier, for one, does not offer BB services, so I have no choice but to use a 3rd party e-mail client.

And even if you use BIS it's great to have access to all your mail and be able to search it really quickly and comfortably. I doubt whether I would use the app instead of BIS if I had the latter but it's certainly a nice addon.

Yeah, I have a feeling this is related to the BIS slowdown...

Agreed. I like being able to access gmail I've sent from my computer. Can't do that with BIS.

Thanks for the tip, as with triforce, this didn't solve the problem unfortunately. Still won't work for me. Maybe I will just uninstall and reinstall and try from there.

Just tried removing it, pulling battery, installing again, pulling battery, then running the app, and it still doesn't work. Is there any way to get the old one back????

Downgrade links, stupid 1.5.1 Mail by Google doesn't work for me either; if you don't see your device listed, follow the pattern and take a guess on the URL.

I just deleted Mail by Google 1.5.1 and installed 1.1.0 and it's not working either like it was before (can't remember when I last ran it, day or two ago?). Maybe it's T-Mobile having a colossal screwup, it *is* raining again.

Our organization is using Mail by Google in a testing phase pending full blown rollout. Beginning after close of business yesterday, we began noticing the problem mentioned in this thread, i.e. "Network Unavailable" messages when trying to retrieve messages. The same problem is currently happening, though intermittently, with the regular Blackberry GMail and GTalk clients.

In addition to this, we have noticed a problem loading https pages in our Blackberry browsers. We are unsure whether this is a Google problem or a RIM issue, but would appreciate any additional information.

I invite you to visit and post related comments to the following Google forum:

I invite you to ask those few people to come here, all the BB users live on these forums (with a much, much better webUI than Google Groups) and this site is heavily indexed by Google. Some random thread in the morass of Groups will just get lost and never found again. (I also get annoyed when people join place B and say nothing more than "hey come over to place A instead!" - that's a lack of respect for place B).

Anyways back on topic, I tried deleting 1.1.0, battery pull, install 1.5.1, battery pull, then run it - and it loaded up after a bit of a pause. Maybe some of y'all might try that...

mine is working... some issues tho...

I have the setting checked to keep me signed in at all times, however when i get an email it doesn't show up automatically. I am using imap and have the email account set up on BIS as well and the alerts coming in for BIS are faster than the gmail app

Also someone mention that the LED light is stuck for alerts. Mine too!

Still working on some things i guess

I'm having the LED light being stuck for alerts as well...bummer b/c I rely on the light to let me know if I have unchecked messages or not.

I did not automatically turn to green after 5 minutes as it did with another use.

I'm using the version for google hosted domains.

Default Flashing LED - 12-07-2007, 05:59 AM

Some correction regarding the non-stop flashing LED:

It DOES stop flashing after exactly 15 minutes upon receipt. That seems also to be the interval the app uses to check for new mail.

I am not sure why Google would do that this way. It surely couldn't have been that difficult to make the LED stop as soon as all new messages are read.
