MiniMoni - Traffic/Data monitor - New release 1.00.0 -
01-04-2008, 09:38 AM
After some weeks of beta testing - thanks to all people helped in that process - I decided to go final with this program and let it be a version 1.00.0.
Moreover I decided to make it free and let the user voluntary decide if they want to donate or not. Making it a free piece of software is my tribute to all the helpers around in the community. You may consider, though, a PayPal donation in order to cover the costs of code signing and to support the future development of MiniMoni. Please do read the appropriated statements in the "Donation" tab carefully.
Main features:
- Counts the IP traffic on GSM/GPRS/EDGE network in byte.
- Scrolling graph to visualize the traffic of the last minutes.
- Builds sums on a daily and a time period basis.
- The day the period ends in the month is configurable.
- A lot of functions can be configured in the preferences in particular to show in bytes or kbytes.
- Maintains a daily and a period's logbook. Logbook entries can have user remarks.
- You may switch on an alarm once a particular amount of traffic volume is reached in the period.
- For devices with SD card the program can write the content of the logbook to SD.
- Separate "Traffic watch" to observe the traffic for a limited period of time separately (Testing of an application etc.)
- Supported languages are English, German and Italian.
- Auto starts on device reboot and installation of new versions.
- Tested and proofed to work on different BlackBerry devices.
For people involved in the beta testing here are the latest changes to 0.43.1:
- The code is signed by RIM now giving a lot of more opportunities in coding
- Included Italian language version. Thanks to blackberryitalia community.
- Expiration date is gone!
- Web site relaunched with a donation part. The decision is to keep this software free and to give the people the opportunity to make donation if and only if they want!
- Two buttons on the about page
Compose a mail to for support questions
Reach the OTA installation site to check for new versions
- As the code is signed now the application does auto start.
- No more annoying question about the access to local resources (SD)
- Some fixes in the code due to deprecated functions (for that I needed the signed code as well)
- Plus a lot of other small things which I forgot to write down
Website with some screen shoots and explanation
MiniMoni - Traffic monitor for BlackBerry
Download (for DM)
http://www.ehnert.net/MiniMoni/MiniMoni.zip
Download (for OTA)
http://www.ehnert.net/MiniMoni/MiniMoni.jad
Still on the ToDo list:
- Integration of the application in the alert profiles.
- Split traffic counter none roaming / roaming.
- Some other small things
Please let me know any problems/suggestions.

I'd like to take a moment to say thanks for writing this app, and thanks for making it donation-ware and available to all. Being on a not-unlimited data plan in Canada, I really will be making use of your application.
Looking forward to your future projects.

The Mailing list a good idea... I'll check this.
For the flat rate in Germany: I have one for 10 Euros per month! So normally I have no need for this program.

8800 Display issue -
01-04-2008, 12:28 PM
Axel, thanks for this great application, donation on it's way. Just so you know, the formatting is still messed up on a 8800, the Out text below the graph is almost entirely off the page, have you tested it on a 8800 model? I can send screenshots if you need, otherwise, thanks for a great effort, can't wait to see what's next on your plate.

I've tested it on the 8800 simulator only. The screen shot you can find on my web site is taken from that. Please send me screen shots of your device. Do you have any additional fonts installed? Any special software? Because I suppose that there are more people outside using an 8800, or am I wrong?
People with 8800: Please let me know, if you have the same experience!

congrats on a 1.0 release! I'll say it again in this thread - for a "first program" this kicks serious {insert three letter word for the posterior}.

Do you have the bytes showing in k's like I do, or the full bytes? All I can think of is that maybe large numbers push the display of the other numbers over...?
Edit: no, that's not it, just tried. I am using 9 pt bold BBMillbank Tall, although I'd guess it has nothing to do with it, as I think MiniMoni uses it's own fonts (I could be wrong but the app's fonts look more "square").

^^^ What he said!
Except that I'd even take out the "for a first program." This is a very polished app.

Normally I would say, that I choose the fonts myself in the app. But I'm unsure if this has the result I want to have. Nevertheless without a screen shot it's difficult to say ...

Yesterday, Axel shared this with me privately:

Axel spent money out of his pocket to buy the signing key for this app so he could give the BBF community the features it requested (like Autostart), not because he personally needed them. If this app is going to save you money and/or you were one of the people who needed a feature that required this key, now is the time to click that Donate link on his website and help him recoup his costs - show a coder some love.

You can also use JL_Cmder.
its in my signature. Simple UI and automatically opens Microsoft Paint. Then just save as a .jpg.

Set the period date -
01-13-2008, 11:42 AM
I am just trying out this application and it looks great. From what I read about the features you are able to set the monthly date of your billing cycle but I cannot find where to set this. Can someone let me know?
thanks.

Fine that you like it ...
In the preferences just scroll down a little. There you find a field called billing date. You need to check "on" the "Reset period's counter ... " to be able to choose the billing date. Go on the number you see, be default 1, click on it end you are able to choose the day.

Thanks for your quick answer. I found it. Just one more questions. If my billing cycle starts on the 26th of the month, should I put 26 or 25? In other words if I want to track the usage till 23:59 on the 25th and have it start at 0 on the 26th, should I put 26 in that field? Thanks again

Yes in that case you have to put the 26 as the cut is done 00:00:__ at the 26th. __ means that the second is not defined. So you have the usage of the whole 25th in the previous period and the 26th in the new one.
Please read that at:

Additions to the ToDo list - New version coming soon. -
01-14-2008, 12:34 PM
Hi all,
made some additions to the ToDo list. As you may see there, some of the new stuff will come soon. I believe I'll be ready during this week. The main improvement: Available version for 4.1 devices Took me a while to figure out, how to have JDE 4.1.0 and 4.2.1 in parallel on the PC

The option in preferences you mentioned is just foreseen to automatically move the application to background after it was not used for more the 60 seconds.
Normally you would close the application using the main menu "Close". It should ask you if you really want to close. If that does not happen, go to preferences and look for the option "Never terminate". If this one is ticked on, tick it off, save and try again to close.

For today and the near future I need to say no. The current RIM API does not support CDMA in a way, that a counter may be implemented.
Sorry for that.

Comparison MiniMoni - Bill -
01-15-2008, 11:58 AM
For all, who asked for the accuracy of the counting: I analyzed my last bill and made a comparison.
You may find the result here:
Comparison MiniMoni - Bill
You will find that my provider charge around 10% more then MiniMoni counted. This is caused by the rounding.
