MiniMoni goes V 1.01.01 and supports 4.1 firmware now -
01-18-2008, 12:32 PM
Dear all,
the IP traffic monitor announced as version 1.00.0 here two weeks ago is now available as version 1.01.01.
Please read the "Update" tab on the website mentioned below before updating! You might loose your logbook / counter otherwise.
The main changes are:
1. Support for devices with firmware 4.1.x .
2. The period's alert is now registered in the alert profiles of your BlackBerry, so you may control it in the same way as all the other alerts.
3. Spanish language version included.
4. Once the limit is reached the application icon contains an exclamation mark.
5. Some bug fixing.
6. On the website separate download links are available for the firmware version 4.1 and 4.2 (see below)
Website with some screen shoots, explanation
MiniMoni - Traffic monitor for BlackBerry
Firmware 4.2:

Hi Axel, thanks for the new version.
Feature request for a future release: ability to not have Autostart enabled (turn it off). I don't run the app all the time (I like it for the Traffic Watch feature, mainly) but everytime I reboot my device MiniMoni starts - I have to go and exit it via the menu. I would like to set a preference to disable Autostart on my device.

Nothing earthshaking, but an observation. In version 1.00.00 and 1.01.01... er well, that last two releases, I lost the ability to save the configuration so that it starts up with the graphic off.
I usually have it set to never terminate, but I have tried various combinations of changing preferences, update now, etc. but it doesn't seem to save.
Now, I can come CLOSE... in that I can actually close the application (with never terminate turned off, of course) and exit, and start the application up and it will come up with the graphic off. But if I restart the phone, it will come up with the graphic on.
That said, after closing it and restarting it (without restarting the phone), I go to preferences, and re-enable never terminate, and save. But I can no longer test it by closing it and restarting (which makes sense). But if I restart the phone, it comes up in graphic mode again.
I feel almost ashamed to bring it up, as this is so minor. So I figure I'm doing something wrong, any suggestions?

Klotar,
that sounds really strange, but I'll try to figure out, what is the reason. It must have to do with the power off power up features I added a few releases ago. But why you are not able to save preferences at all, I have no idea...

Hi Axel,
I'd say if you can't duplicate it, don't waste time looking for the reason. Certainly the application does what it's supposed to. I can save every preference setting, just not the graphic state at bootup -- which really isn't one of the settings in preferences anyways. It's easy enough for me to turn the graph off.

I notice that while on wifi/uma that the app records some data going through the newest version of JiveTalk (1.04 beta.) My options in JiveTalk are TCP/WiFi Preferred and Advanced Connection Parameters direct=socket.
It hasn't always recorded data when on wifi. Any ideas?

I think I have it now. If you boot while MiniMoni is running it has no chance to write the perferences befor leaving. And that means as well no chance to write if graphic was running or not. It is not saved either if you save preferences. I might change this so if you write the perferences, the actual status of the graphic is stored as well. The general proem is, that I have not find a way yet to store on reboot. But may I can implement to store this one setting on every toggle of graph.

i'm not sure i really understand how this app works. I've installed it and used data, but nothing shows up, this period still at 0kb.
I'm on Bell in Canada, so i really gotta keep good track of my data usage.
Edit - Researched more, there's no CDMA support? Bummer.

Hi Axel,
many thanks for this great utility!
I tried it on a BB8800 (v4.2.1.108) and BB8100 (v4.2.1.109) and seem to notice a significant difference, on both devices, in what was being reported by my Service Provider and what was being shown on minimon.
Over the last couple of days my research seems to suggest that none of the "facebook" traffic is measured... I am not sure why though.
Hence, I would appreciate it if you could check this for me...
I also noticed that you are looking into showing BIS and GPRS traffic seperately within the the application; which would be great additional functionality if you find time to implement it.
MfG,
PDM

Very good proposal. Hope I'll find a way to determine when the GPRS connection is canceled and connected new. Because the rounding happens exactly at this point. If I'm not able to catch this event it makes no sense to add an option for the minimum data block size.
For example: My provider drops the connection every 02 h 30 minutes. And at midnight. I'm quite sure, that the rounding to the next data block size happens at these very moments.

Ahhh, it seems you do need that library... Thought the internals worked in a different manner.

Axel,
I just wanted to confirm that your app does not track data used via WiFi.
your site says "Counts the IP traffic on GSM/GPRS/EDGE network in byte.", and I just wanted to confirm that this means that WiFi is not being tracked.
thanks in advance for your response.

I think I may have found my answer, my 8130 pearl is CDMA, and I now see, no support for this.
Does anybody know of a similar tracker that will support this feature?

Because the author has stated it's a failure in the RIM programming API to provide a way to support that, the most likely answer is "no, not until RIM releases a new API to allow it" - just like the Wifi data counting (or not counting, as it were). For you CDMA guys he's not saying he won't support you, it's that he *can't* support you - programmer's hands are tied.

Not yet. It probably will take some time. The beta tests are not very promising.

It doesn't seem to be recording data when tethered to my laptop. Is there something I am missing? I tether via USB and have a decent speed, as far as EDGE goes, but data transfer is not being picked up by Mini-Moni.

Can't say anything about this as I never have tested it. What device and what version of firmware you use?

Sorry to say this: 4.5 is not yet supported and I wonder if it really counts device data usage. Please let me know.

It appears to be counting something but question it's accuracy, seems if I download a 300kb file then it should register 300kb in MM.

A quick test reveals that you're using RadioInfo.getNumberOfPacketsReceived() to do your computations. You should know that packet sizes can reach sizes of 8k over IPPP and there's no way to tell which protocol was used or how big the individual packets are. This means that the projected data use could be off by a factor of 8192. I hate to rain on the parade, but there's no way to get truly accurate data in this regard with the public APIs.
The metrics from this application are how many packets are sent and received, not how many bytes are sent and received.
BTW, I do enjoy the app

I'm using v1.01.03 on the bold and it seems to be mostly working fine. Only problem I've noticed is the alert or dialog box fonts are partial formed.
Eg clicking on TRAFFIC WATCH or the "Save Preferences?" dialog.
Update: For the bold, it looks like wifi traffic is also being counted. Not sure if this is the best way, but I verified this by turning off "Mobile Network" and browsing via wifi+hotspot browser only. After each page browsed, the daily totals increased. (.234)
