Viigo vs. NewsGator

Now that Viigo has been updated and NewsGator is free, I have both installed (temporarily). Viigo was lacking before the update. It seems smoother but now that they've started with AMEX ads, I'm wondering just how cluttered the program will get as they try to milk ad revenues. NewsGator seems slower (loading RSS feeds) but the Windows interface is nice. (If I'm near my computer, I can read feeds and also clean them up, rather than just reading them in Viigo.) Has anyone made a decision which one to keep?

viigo is still my choice

I tried them both and I like Viigo a lot more. Newsgator only lasted about a day on mine. I found Viigo easier to use overall, and it seemed quicker as well.

Viigo - will show images
NewsGator - nada on the images

The most annoying thing for me is that NewsGator hides your feeds when there are no unread articles. I do like the folders, but the fact that Viigo does not have those (yet) is not a deal breaker.

Viigo by far!!

gibber9583 01-31-2008 11:25 AM

given a choice between the 2...definitely Viigo. You should also check out freerange if you have <10 RSS feeds

I tried Viigo, NewsGator and FreeRange. I still wind up back with Bloglines.

I have tried both. If you want a good rss reader, try google reader. The technology is amazing, and you know with google it can only get better. Enjoy!

Images are key for me and Viigo just works very well... News gator only lasted a few minutes on my device.

FreeRange on sale

One thing that bothers me abut the Blackberry RSS readers is the GUI. They just don't seem to be quite there yet. Simple buttons and icons, with subtle colors, and small, not gaudy. In an attempt to make an application stand out, they just make them less visually appealing in a work environment. I'm a big fan of a clean GUI. I like buttons and icons, but I like them small, with a sharp appearance, not fuzzy.

Comparisons are often made between Viigo and NewsGator Go. Now that Handango is offering FreeRange for 75% off, this is even more appealing. I still don't care for this GUI either, but it works pretty well. I have a strong dislike for an application that places advertisements in an installed Blackberry application, whether it's free or not, like Viigo.

Where are you seeing this 75% off Free Range on Handango?

gibber9583 01-31-2008 02:29 PM

I call BS. Freerange is a yearly subscription, isnt it? or u can get 10 RSS feeds for free.

Dawg 01-31-2008 02:30 PM

you get 10 free

PabloTX 01-31-2008 02:31 PM

Awesome! Use code E47C3F42 until 2/15 and you can get Free Range for $10. Free for less than 10 feeds, but this is the paid version. $40 was too much for me, but I'd pay $10 a year for it.
