Jivetalk AIM signs off during conversation
 

I noticed when I'm on a phone conversation, my AIM via Jivetalk signs off.
When I end the call, then it signs back on...

Is that just the mechanics and is there something I can do to stay online?

Just mechanics. The phone can't be using the internet and the phone at the same time. New blackberry, 3g, is suppose to be able to.

With GPRS/EDGE networks, you cannot have concurrent voice and data channels open at the same time. (The spec technically allows for it, but no mobile operator or handset manufacturer has ever implemented this extension to my knowledge.) To get concurrent voice and data, you need to be connected via UMTS or UMA/GAN (EV:DO probably works, too, though I've never looked into it).
