Default Important BeamBerry Price Update - 02-21-2008, 06:37 AM

I received this email from BeamBerry this morning.
This makes BeamBerry much more attractive.

Quote:
From: [email address]
Subject: Important BeamBerry Price Update

Dear BeamBerry Customer,

We wanted to share with you some exciting news about the pricing for
the BeamBerry service. The price of an annual subscription to the
BeamBerry service (after the free 10 day trial) was originally
$49.99 USD / year. However, we have listened to the feedback coming
from our customers and decided that the price for the BeamBerry service
subscription will be a one time fee of $49.99 USD going forward. That means
that you will not have to pay to renew the BeamBerry service subscription
every year.
We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to continue
using BeamBerry. If you have already purchased a BeamBerry subscription, you will be
automatically taking advantage of this new pricing model and not
action is required on your part.

Corporate volume discounts of up to 25% are offered. To learn more
about corporate discounts and to purchase BeamBerry please visit our
website at:
https://www.beamberry.com/BBViewer2/buy_now.html
We truly appreciate and value your business. Please do not hesitate
to contact us should you have any questions.

Sincerely,

BeamBerry Team

I think it does make BeamBerry much more attractive and much more competitive.

As we don't know yet what Docs to Go will be charging (there will likely be some basic free viewing option, but the entire service won't be free) we'll see when they enter the market.

I agree with Sith. BeamBerry is much better than docs to go. This is an EXCELLENT deal. I hope many take advantage of it. It's right up there with JiveTalk, IMO.

They are smart to adjust the pricing structure. I will wait to see what the competition will have to offer.

Am I wrong in assuming that Beamberry lets you view Office documents but doesn't have any editing ability?
If the forthcoming docs2go mimics its Pocket PC/Palm versions it will allow editing of Office documents.

We'll have to see what access Docs2Go allows to the Media card, etc., it's just hard to compare right now.

Saving email attachments to the device/card is where docs to go is limited.

Because, so far, I've not seen the ability to save an email attachment. Right now, it appears it will require both apps to get the job done. Perhaps that will change.

Gotcha, but do you mean you can save to the SD card with BeamBerry or do you mean saving to the BeamBerry disk?

Kind of, indirectly. You can store it up on Beamdisk and then copy/paste it to device or card memory. Unless there's a way to stored it on the card from the get-go off the email, I haven't seen any.

This offer definitely is attractive. Would anyone have any knowledge if these guys are here to stay? I'm speaking as someone who has gotten burned in the past, shelling out >$50 for software that was EOL'ed a couple of months later with no support thereafter.

@Gameboy, I don't think I said one was better, I said we don't know much yet about what Docs2Go will offer, since it is not available yet.

@haephaestus, BeamBerry has been around for about 3 years, the first two in free beta. They only went commercial this past month. My feeling it will be around, because it will compete with the other applications on the same service.

I was actually responding to JClark who said that Beamberry was better than Docs2Go.

I agree we haven't seen what the new app will offer, but I have used Beamberry, when it was free, for months and really liked it. This price change is a good move for everyone I think.

I was really hoping that with Docs 2 go we would be able to save an attachment and edit it. Unfortunatly, that's not the case, so far. You'll still need something like BeamBerry unless the premium version of docs 2 go (not free) will do it.

This is why I wish I had a WM smartphone or something like a N95 or etc. Seriously this is a feature that should have came on Blackberry's from the get go. Why would I want to pay extra money for something that should've came with the phone and comes on other phones free. This is just pure frustration speaking, coming from a college student that needs this sort of file support.

When purchasing a device you should recognize the limitations of it. Native file support is for viewing only on the device at this time. RIM has announced a suite of apps from Dataviz (docs2go) that will enable editing and saving to the media card. Currently for Excel there is a free app available from Simprit, its called GridMagic

Yeah I never realized when I purchased a BB (about a year ago) that it couldn't view PDF's, Word files, and etc stored on a MicroSD. I learned pretty quickly you can view through emails as attachments but not through the device memory itself. That makes things difficult when you have a 70MB PDF file that you need to view that you cant email.

My thing is why would RIM not have that feature, considering how important it is compared to other features they decided to add. Its a pretty bad move on their part IMO. Its gets more frustrating when you see these other smartphones with this ability out of the box.

Yeah I know all about the Docs2go and the Grid magic Community edition. Theres so many rumors surrounding Docs2GO you never know what will come of it.

To which rumors are you refering? There have been concrete announcements on what the product will and wont do. Dataviz has information listed on their website, as does RIm.

Whether or not it will be for BES or BIS users? Read somewhere about it for BES never mentioned BIS.
The price? Whether it will be free or have a one time fee? Or have a premium version that has a extra cost?
Whether it will have MicroSD support to view and edit files or just downloading from attachments and viewing/editing them?

it was announced originally that it will support the microSD as a storage medium, i believe dataviz (could have been RIM) also made an announcement that there will be a free version along with a premium version you have to pay for, and for editing of attachments in email, it states you need BES. (though this doesnt have anything to do with documents already on the device).

team, you just need to read their press release.

This is thread was about BeamBerry. There is perfectly clear information on the site for Docs2Go.

Do some thorough research before you buy your next device and your disappointment level might be eased.

Good luck.

The iPhone rocks for viewing various Office documents & PDFs. I recently bought an iPhone for voice & data but kept my Blackberry for data (can't beat the push mail for corporate e-mail & use as modem). The two make a great combo by the way...

When in doubt, empty the magazine...

You could drop by a local Best Buy or Circuit City and pair w/a BT printer on display and try it for me.

In your spare time, of course.

I used the BT printing feature a few times, seemed to work pretty well. Don't have the app currently, didn't use it enough to justify it under the previous price structure. Considering it now.

Thanks, pdone.

This is so cool...I had never bothered to pair my BB w/the BT printer I have.

I did so now, and noticed that it's services included "OBEX Push."

So I went to media, went to pictures, and selected an image. Pressed the BB key and selected "Send using Bluetooth."

Badda bing, badda boom, the printer wakes up and prints out the picture!

It printed out 5 1/4" x 4" centered on the 8 1/2 x 11 page.

Had no idea I could do that natively with the Pearl OS. Kinda cool.

Very cool! I haven't tried printing or sending anything using the BB OS, just Beamberry. Nice find!!

OK, still being somewhat green behind the ears, I was curious what the difference is between BeamBerry, Docs2Go, and eOffice (from DynoPlex).

Not to pitch an Ad for DynoPlex, but their product allows the viewing and editing of many MS Office apps. Am I comparing apples (not Macs) and oranges here, or is BeamBerry coming to the table ill-equipped?

Ok, now I'm guessing I will get some heat because now it may look like I *am* pitching the Dynoplex product, but in truth I was just curious about it's features and abilities.

Anyway, turns out that eOffice can read documents from and write them to the SD storage card, print to a Bluetooth printer, and transfer files over the web to and from your PC at home.

Can someone with experience using BeamBerry or possibly an alpha/beta version of Docs2Go (if such is available) comment on any comparative features along with any additional ones if any.

About the only negative I have found so far is the price for eOffice which is around $99.98 (as of Feb 29, 2008).
