XM launches radio on BlackBerry

By Simon Sage on XM-satellite-radio

XMHow does 20 commercial-free, 24-hour radio stations on your BlackBerry sound? Pretty good, especially for $7.99/month. QuickPlay and XM Radio have teamed up to bring comedy, country, talk, hip-hop and any other radio station you would want to hear to your BlackBerry. AT&T’s been supporting XM radio services for a little while, but the service is significantly opened up and expanded with this QuickPlay partnership. Any BlackBerry packing OS 4.2 and up is good to go, so head on over to www.xmradio.com/bb for a free 24-hour trial. Stay tuned for more news out of Las Vegas!

I have XM in my car and office, and I love it. If you're going to get it on BB, consider carefully the stations that are offered. It's NOT all of them - I think they offer 25 streaming to BB. If the ones you like are not among them, don't pay the $8.99 per month. Also, with XM and Sirius likely merging soon. the stations offered now may be subject to change.

It seems to be working well on my T-Mobile 8320.

Has anyone determined if you have to pay for this if you're already a subscriber?

Yes, you do. I had the same question and contacted either XM or AT&T - can't remember which. This is separate from your regular XM subscription.

How is this different than listening to XM Radio Online, which is currently bundled into an XM subscription (i.e., no additional charge). In this case, the BlackBerry is simply another computer that is accessing the XM audio stream. Yes, I could understand a one-time reasonable licensing fee for the XM Radio Mobile application, but $7.99 per month is ludicrous for current subscribers -- a subscription for an additional XM radio receiver is only $6.99 per month!

BTW, XM is not the first to neglect current subscribers when launching a BlackBerry application service. The AAA currently offers no discount to AAA members for their AAA Mobile for BlackBerry application (currently $9.99 per month), which is an "award-winning navigation and local search application from AAA".

Noob here. Why pay for it again when you can use orb + uXM and listen to it for free.

Setup is in this thread: http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...check-out.html

Works great on my vzw pearl

edit: you have to already have a sirius or xm subscription

Yeah there is NO way I would ever think about paying $8 a month for this application! Good luck XM but after seeing the application with only 20 stations 15 which I would never listen to I think you will end up pissing people off asking them to pay this much for something that looks to not even be finished. The only reason I downloaded this was for talk/sports radio which is not available. No MLB right when the season kicks off.

Great looking application.....
Horrible Sound quality.....
Stops playing music whenever you get an email, and you have to relaunch the channel....
volume control doesn't work unless in the application....

Not worth it to me......

Wirelessly posted (Verizon 8830)

Maybe someone would consider devising a poll as to what percentage of users
Current subscribers or potential new subscribers paid the new subscription

I already pay for 2 xm products (plus a sirius, don't ask). not a chance I am paying for one more.

Also, it did not work on my VZW 8130

Just installed & it's running...but keeps cutting out. I have XM in my car & love it - but not gonna pay $8 for sketchy service (or only 20 channels)

Great concept though...would be nice when I'm at the gym or something...

Try BerryTunes v2.2 (Virtual Views Mobile Software) as an alternative -- one-time $20 license fee, and you can access literally hundreds of Internet radio feeds! The have a three-day free trial, too.

Another option is dollars5 Media player - you can add any station you can find on the internet, and there are hundreds. It is also a good media player for video and audio files, you can create playlists and it's customizable. I can get my former college station KUCI over it, KUSC too, all sorts of stations not on berry tunes (which i have and still like for its simple layout). Best of all, you can get radio stations from shoutcast, the ones with nuts babbling about world conspiracies and ufo's for those long, long drives to keep you from passing out. That alone is worth it.

I checked this program out - not a single channel I like. If they update with a massive amount of channels (including news), then they'll have something. Otherwise...not quite there.

$20 one time fee.

It's a great company, they have very good customer support and are constantly making improvements. XM definitely looks better visually, but it doesn't have all the features of dollars5 media player. One day maybe it'll be better and more flexible, but dollars5 media player in my opinion just wins out in features, quality and a good company that cares about its customers behind it.

Downloaded and tried the 24 hour trial. Sound quality is horrible, like listening to AM radio. I couldn't get the app to keep music playing for more than 2 songs. It would just stop playing / lock up on me. Uninstalled.

...until someone writes a decent XM player for the Curve, a viable option is ORB and uXM.

I've been a loyal XM subscriber for many years (and used to listen all the time on my Treos); I cannot believe that XM would gouge its current subscribers for mobile access when PC access is free. In Yiddish, we call that chutzpah.

I currently use Orb and uXM and it works great.

What have you set the streaming format? I can't get orb to work on my bb. I'm on sprint 8830

Thanks

I don't believe the 8830 handles all the same formats as the 8330 Curve. Somebody out there correct me if I'm wrong...
