Default Yahoo oneSearch Voice Recognition - 04-03-2008, 06:52 PM

Got this from BBGeeks:

DOWNLOAD OTA: m.yahoo.com/voice

Additional Info: Hands-on: Yahoo oneSearch 2.0 with voice | Software news, tips, and opinions from Download.com editors - Download.com
So Yahoo! just announced a series of upgrades to oneSearch, including a speech-based search feature. The application is only available on the BlackBerry at the moment, so after the announcement I went to their mobile site (m.yahoo.com/voice) to give it a whirl. First stop: the convention floor. There are thousands of people roaming about, so you can imagine the noise level. However, oneSearch was up to the task, searching out whatever my voice commanded.

Up on the concourse and away from most of the noise, I ran a few more tests through it. “Toronto Stock Exchange” went through perfectly. However, when I said the letters of the acronym, T-S-E, it came up T-S-C. No biggie, though. I just went to the search text box above the results, deleted “C,” and typed “E” in its place. This allows oneSearch to learn my voice tendencies — which often includes mumbled and otherwise incomprehensible ramblings.

I’m getting a full review ready, where I’ll really put the learning aspects to the test. At least initially, I have come away wholly impressed by this new service.
So far I have used this a couple of times and I have to say I am pretty impressed. You can actually use this like you use beyond 411. Just say the "restaurant" etc followed by the city and state and your local info should pop up in the search results with the address and phone number.

I installed it a couple of hours ago and tested it out about a dozen or so times and it's worked perfectly on almost all of them. Some things can obviously be spoken clearly and it nails those every time. Other things I knew it would have a problem with, and it required some correction. For example, there is a restaurant near me called Akasha Restaurant. So, speaking as clearly as possible, I said "Akasha Restaurant in Culver City California." It came back with "A caution restaurant in culver city california." So, while not perfect, I'm actually very impressed with this program. I think it's a keeper.

Yea, same thing here. But I have to say that it works MUCH better than expected. I think you are right. It is a keeper.

FYI- If you follow sports just say the name of your team and the most recent games, scores etc show up. Much faster than navigating espn etc. Great while driving and not having to type.

This is a nice app. I got it a couple hours ago, and so far I've had no problems out of it.

Used this as I was driving home late last night. It was nice to be able to look up the local business by voice and have the number and address pop right up. So far so good.

Not to mention the people in the car with me were jealous of my blackberry!

I hardly even use the a regular search engine anymore. So much easier and quicker with this program.

Was messing around with it to see if I could stump it...said"supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" to see what it would do, and sure enough...got it right the first time. Now I'm impressed!

As an update to my earlier post, I've been using this for a few days now and I continue to be very impressed. It does mess up some stuff, but I pretty much know in advance which ones it's going to mess up.

For example, if I say "weather in Los Angeles California," I know in advance it will get that right.

However, if I say "Joan's on 3rd in Los Angeles California" (a little cafe nearby), I know in advance that it will likely get that wrong because it won't know how to spell Joan's. Sure enough, it showed up as "Jones on third in Los Angeles California." However, a quick manual edit and I'm back in business.

This program really is amazing.

They seriously need to implement a "goto" function that will go straight to a website. Very Cool!

What OS are you running on your Pearl? I have 4.2.0.64 and Yahoo tells me I need to upgrade for oneSearch Voice to work. Won't even let me download...

Courtesy of Blackberry Cool:

WES Exhibitor Spotlight: Vlingo | BlackBerry Cool

Vlingo’s speech recognition technology is behind the recent release of Yahoo! oneSearch. They also offer their own search app called Vlingo FIND, which searches locally and includes maps. They’re developing an app that will add speech recognition to pretty much every aspect of the BlackBerry: calling, emailing, text messages, memos to self, and more. WES, of course, would make a perfect venue for release…

vlingo

Looks like it's not compatible for blackberrys yet. Hopefully it's coming soon.

Heard bout' that too...Yahoo! is right behind them and has already started to implement those features as well inside their OneSearch!WithVoice in upcoming releases with OneConnect! and OnePlace! Should be around the end of 2nd Quarter or beginning of 3rd Quarter....:spoiler:

So let's take a vote. Who prefers the Yahoo platform and who prefers the microsoft tellme platform?

I like the search results of the yahoo oneSearch but prefer the options (directions, maps, etc) of the tellme program.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: Looks like someone beat me to this question in a new thread:

Everytime Onesearch tries to display the results - I get an error stating "Access Denied (authentication_failed)" Onesearch loads fine, it recognizes my voice search requests, displays what I said and then goes into search mode. However, it never displays the results - rather it gives me that error. I have enabled all permissions to allow, wi-fi is turned off, but still no go. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Hello All,

Anyone using this on a 8120? I am trying it but it comes back with a message saying that it can not connect to the update server.

Thanks,

I love this One Search app, it's a must have, glad Microsoft did not take over Yahoo.
