I use a Treo as my work phone, and my favorite application is KeyCaps, which allows me to hold down a button to Capitalize, and douple-tap a button to get the Alt symbol that correspond to that button. - ie if I hit 'j' twice in rapid succession I get an exclamation point.

My blackberry 8820 has half this functionality, with the 'hold down to capitalize' feature. But I am really missing the ability to double-tap for the Alt symbol on a particular button. This would make it truly easy to type emails one-handed and to type just a bit faster!

Does anyone know of software for the BB that does this?? Any help or ideas?

Hold the letter key, and roll the trackball left or right.

Holding the letter key and rolling the trackball on my 8830 only appears to capitalize the letter but not provide the ALT version of the key.

I had something very similar to what the original poster asked about on my hp200lx - it really made typing on smaller keypads easier.

When looking at a text application such as Messeages, choose Menu|Edit Auto Text. Make an entry for the key you'd like to double-tap. If you select from the menu, you'll see that you can add macro functions to remove spaces, delete, etc. I have these set up so that mm = ...; nn=,; bb=! etc.

Great suggestion, kjaslow. I use Autotext for lots of long text strings but I never thought of creating some for often used "Alt key" text items, that would make my one hand typing easier.

THANKS!!!! A few weeks ago I have entered a "qu" to type QUESTION MARK but that left a space between the "?" and the prior word. I've just added a BACKSPACE to my sequence and now the SPACE is gone. Again, THANKS

Have you found a way to insert a macro at the end of a word? For example, 'happeningvv' becomes 'happening?' Or should I make the vv autotext with a delete macro such that 'happening vv ' becomes 'happening? '

Edit:
For some reason I can't make an autotext for vv that goes: %B? and actually works right (%B = delete). What I'm trying to do is get rid of the space in front of the vv so that 'happening vv' becomes 'happening?' as above. But the space doesn't go away, so I end up with 'happening ?'

Any ideas?

I believe you always have to have a SPACE before and a SPACE after the autotext string you want to replace with YOUR TEXT.

So, unless you specifically enter "happeningvv" as the string and have it replaced with "happening?" it will not work. The "vv" has to stand on its own away from "happening" That's why you want the MACRO to backspace.

I edited the one I had created for "qu" which had been a plain Question Mark (?) to added the macro %b in front of the ?

so when I now read that autotext entry is looks like:

%b?

But I think I will follow the DoubleTap concept and use the one you suggested vv for ?

Does autotext work in the BB browser? I guess I will try. I want easier ways to enter the / character. (edited to add) More playing is necessary since a SPACE enters a DOT into web adddresses. so I can't enter a "delimiting space" without it getting replaced by a DOT!

(hhmmmm - can't get to autotext from the memopad app!!!) It works in memo but does not allow editing autotext

Here's the problem/solution: On my 8820, %B does not seem to work *before* the character. So %B? did not delete the space, but %b? did.

You guys are geniuses for figuring this out. I was really hating the concept of hitting the symbol key to find the right character. This will make texting much easier.
