Man, I love those two apps bbToday and bbWeather. I travel so much and will the multi-city profiles, it was great.

Here's one that does what BBWeather did (only better)...It's $9.98 per 6 month subscription, but it's cheaper than WeatherBug or TheWeatherChannel app. 1 month free trial.

Edit: I might even buy this one myself. I can't find a city that's not in there. No looking up ID's online or having to know the zip code. 45,000 cities worldwide. It even knew Fort Deposit, Alabama!

What about using webshortcuts and bookmark your city on weather.com?

I've done that with webshortcuts and weatherunderground, I just wish the icon would not reset each time I reboot.

I decide yesterday to DL BBweather again after a hiatus of about 1yr, maybe i jinxed it! Sad day :( In the meantime weathereye isnt bad at all.

As I posted in another (now locked thread) on this topic:

I use Viigo to pull RSS feeds from Weather Bug. This allows me to have up to date information and Viigo can be setup for multiple feeds (i.e. different locations).

Viigo is free.

NOTE: In Viigo; Add Channel > Local Traffic, Events & Weather > Weather . This will bring up the wizard to add your location and build the RSS address for you.

Anyone know if MyCast plans on adding support for Sprint 88xx or 83xx models? I took a look at their site but I don't think it's updated very often. Tried calling and might as well have been trying to get through to the Pope. Nothing but a hassle...

The problem with Yahoo's weather API is that it only gives a forecast for 1 day. Google's weather API looks a little better, it gives forecasts for 3 days.

I don't currently have the blackberry SDK installed but I might have time to look into this sometime in the next two or three weeks.

Is Viigo just a plain text program or does it display the pictures with the weatherbug rss feed? It's just hard to let go of the slick bbweather interface (at least without paying for it).

Wish I could make it free like BBWeather but it's a nice little app, nonetheless. Hopefully Tateu can rewrite BBWeather to work again.

If possible a method of searching by city name included in the app would be a real plus to BBWeather.

I am the author of YWeather.

Support for multiple locations has been highly requested and I am looking into supporting that feature in the next release.

I am also thinking about switching from the Yahoo! Weather API and using the Google Weather API which provides more forecast data. ( If I did this I guess I should change the name to GWeather eh?)

I also wanted to get the opinion/suggestions from users on a couple of ideas?

Should I update the application icon to the current condition when updated?

Should I also add the ability to have the application run in the background and automatically update the forecast data and application icon if done?

Unfortunately I don't control when Yahoo! updates their weather feeds...

Also note, currently their is no auto update. It only updates when the application is launched or manually updated via the menu.

Support for multiple locations is a must. It would be nice if one could search for cities worldwide right from the application.

Switching to the Google API for the better forecast data, if possible, would be a major plus!

I am currently using WeatherEye just because of the current condition application icon. That is a very nice touch.

It would be great to have the ability to have the app run in the background and automatically update the forecast and app icon. One bug I've found with WeatherEye is that the icon doesn't update when the device is on the zen screen. You have to hit the menu key, go to a full icon screen and then when you go back to the zen screen the icon is updated. However, there are times when I don't want the weather running in the background so the ability to enable and disable this feature would be nice. Closing the app completely would suffice for disabling this, I'm sure.

It's tough to ask a programmer to do all the things that the commercial apps do so a basic app with as many features as possible is fine. The more the better but, of course, we are all missing our free and simple BBWeather.

Good luck with this and I suggest you start a dedicated thread with your app and get suggestions from everyone. We have a good group here and I'm sure they would lend a hand with whatever you need.

@jemerick... I will try your app, I have not yet. I like the updated homescreen icon such as Weathereye, but the detail from BBWeather (P.O.P., winds, temps (and "feels like temp" as well, sunrise/set, moon, etc.). I know that might be alot, but something for a goal, at least. I also like the app to update on my variable interval like BBWeather (30, 60, 120... mins).

Wow, someone better read the license agreements for the yahoo and google API's. They clearly state that using them like BBWeather is a violation of the terms.

Nothing that good is free.

That's why PocketDay now uses a subscribed weather feed (we pay for this). PocketDay allows up to 5 different cities to be defined and you can switch between them with 2 clicks.

Yes, i know it's not free, but PocketDay offers so much more than just weather. We are contemplating offering a new combination of features just for travelers (weather, world clocks, currency conversion, stocks) as a new product.

I see no reason, certainly not anything "clear" as you would describe, that would indicate any problem with using the Yahoo Weather API for a free open source application like BBWeather.

Why not use a feed from weather.gov? I had read something a few months ago that Weather Channel was trying to get NOAA out of providing free weather info because it affects their subscription model, but I don't know if that move was successful.

The Yahoo weather API is fine. Not only is it fine, it was built specifically for the purpose of allowing developers to use it in free and open source software. The same is true for pretty much every single publicly accessible API offered by Yahoo or Google. The only people who can't use it are those trying to incorporate it in to a commercial work, like say....oh, I don't know....PocketDay.

We're not setting any precedents here. Do a quick search and you'll find hundreds of free applications already using the Yahoo Weather API. You'll find desktop applications, mobile applications, web applications, the list goes on and on.

As a side note, I notice that weather.com still feeds my desktop weather application (Yahoo widgets' weather app).

While weather.com obviously changed something to break BBWeather, it doesn't seem as if they stopped all external feeds to 3rd parties.

Point taken. Back when I was messing around with flight simulators, NOAA/NWS freely provided METAR files of worldwide meteorological data the simulator software used to generate weather conditions. Dunno if they still do - I was thinking of that as a possible data source.
