Default Best FREE Chat Software now?? (updated please!) - 06-19-2008, 04:24 PM

I know this subject is hot and Jive talk gets so much attention, but I really am a student and I don't want to spend 20-30 on a program right now, WebMessenger has fulfilled my needs since I'm not a heavy IMer on my phone. But I wanted to know if anyone had any other likes for a good free chat software program. I especially dont want to spend money b/c if it was really that important I would use the Yahoo or AIM program that came with the phone. One thing I don't like about WebMessenger is no "notification" icon like most other programs have...

However, I tried out Palringo when the beta came out (and it was buggier than a summer in the South) and I liked the format a lot better than WebMessenger.

I was wondering if anyone who is using free chat software as opposed to Jivetalk has any input on this...

I recommend JiveTalk. However, you could try this Free IM client launches for BlackBerry | BlackBerry Cool

I have never used this app so I can't tell you how well it works/doesn't work.

I use the free version of Yahoo from mobile.blackberry.com, and it works great.

I don't know any other, decent, that work.

Someone did post one in the past two weeks in this section, I forget the name of it, but you will find if you scroll through.

Yes, JSConyers that was it, Mundo and Instango.

Thank you for the quick replies!!

I am thinking about jumping on Jivetalk later on (I was going to wait til I had the money before I got the trial and got enticed by it), but seeing as there are quite a few new and free programs coming out (Palringo, and then Instango that was posted above on BB Cool) I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with them that would make one of those free programs either comparable at least to JiveTalk or even just better than WebMessenger b/c that's the only one I use now that has a decent (IMO) multi-client chat for free...

I personally like the RIM apps myself and mainly use the Yahoo and WLM ones.

I have not used the free chat apps. I would assume you get what you pay for. I will Download Instango and try it out. I will let you know what I think.

Do that at your own risk, I heard it was worse than Palringo and that one gave me a lot of crap (although they have a new version out today per BB Cool I believe), so if you aren't interested, don't go for it and risk a lot of trouble...

As far as getting what you pay for...the RIM programs are great, and they are free...
But yeah I agree, and I would buy JiveTalk if 1. I chatted more, and 2. I had money now.

I prefer WebMessenger 3.0. it is very basic and free. JiveTalk is easily the best if you want to pay. I am a light IMer so it wasn't worth paying for but if you are a heavy IMer I would definitely pay the $25 for the lifetime license that is not device specific.

I just read some reviews on Instango and battery life seems to be an issue. I will not be installing this.

I'm a student as well and I don't have a lot of extra money, so I downloaded the trial of JiveTalk just to try it out. I was so into the program that I didn't notice when my 30 days passed and was so saddened when I could suddenly not use the program that I ponied up the 30 bucks (didn't know about the coupon) for the lifetime license. It's a hefty price for a program, I understand that quite well since during the school year I make about 100 bucks a week after taxes if I'm lucky. But it's a program that works fantastically and with the lifetime license, you can move it to any other BB device you upgrade to in the future.

WebMessenger is what the OP is using right now. They're just interested in any alternatives as well.

Getting JiveTalk isn't really an issue of "if" it's "when" (the money frees up, hopefully I'll have some more for the 9000-series then too )

I am using Web Messenger, I don't think it's using Wi-Fi, I also have issues with how it works (for one, no more icon for a new message??? WTH!)
So I do need a new program, I was just wondering if there were any free ones to use until I got JiveTalk (didn't wanna get the trial and get hooked and have to buy it before I am ready too!)

I've tried all of the Multi-platform free messengers that are out there and Jive talk is better than any of them, but of the Free ones the newest Web Messenger is hands down the closest to Jive Talk in ease of use and performance IMHO.

As Always...

Happy Berrying!

I do like the choice of a free IM client but, my work uses a jabber server, so I used JiveTalk because of its ability to connect to a jabber server. I've noticed most free versions don't support jabber. (Unless someone can point me to a IM client that does..)

Nimbuzz, according to their website does. I go back and forth with that and Web Messenger.

I'm trying web messenger 3. I downloaded to my phone. Now It's just an ICON and when I click on it nothing happens? What am I missing?
