I installed it, but you need to use the PTT key or the camera key to activate it, and I use both of those features. That was poor forethought on their part.

Default Vlingo? - 06-25-2008, 10:50 AM

I just got an email from Pinstack.com telling me about a new voice command program for smartphones called Vlingo, vlingo. Has anyone seen this or tried it? If it is any better at voice dialing than the installed version on the 8310 it will be worth it unless it is some type of malware that will bugger up my phone.

When you dictate the e-mail, it doesn't capitalize.

There is a work-around for this. Let the app initially configure this way. In vlingo Options, set Voice Key Active to On vlingo Home, and save. Reconfigure your convenience key as it was previously. You can now launch vlingo from your BlackBerry home screen or via the 3rd-party launcher of your choice.

OK, I feel bad about being two faced in my web life. I will go and self flagellate myself in a little while.

However, while I am off whipping myself, does anyone actually have any info on this program?

I just installed it but it won't run. Keeps giving me an error about accessing a secure API. Is anyone else running into this? Any fix?

There isn't a voice recognition program that was written for an Alabamian. We don't even understand each other.

For the accessing a secure API. error, in their FAQ it says to install it with DM.

I tried it out and initially it seemed pretty good. I was able to do web searches. However, they claim it can open applications so I tried saying "open camera" (I used the convenience key that had been on the camera). It did a web search on "open camera". Now it just keeps telling me that it couldn't understand me and that I need to speak louder or closer to the mic or some crap like that. I'm rebooting to see if it clears up. It has a lot of promise so I'm willing to give it another go. If it fails to understand me again, it's gone.

Downloaded it and have been running it all day. I haven't had any problems and it pretty much operates as described.

From the user guide:
You can use the vlingo™ software to open the following applications on your device:
• Calendar
• Address Book
• Maps
• Web Browser
• Email
• Tasks
• MemoPad
Unfortunately, Open Camera is not currently supported.

Same here. Even double-checked my APN setting and called Rogers to ensure I had it activated. My other apps (Google apps, etc.) work fine so I'm not sure if it's a network issue or a Vlingo issue.

Just tried this today. Works as described. Is there any way to run this without using the convenience key? It would be nice if they would build in commands that would work while running other programs. For example: If you were reading an email be able to say: "reply" or "forward". Same with text messaging.

It would be nice if when you searched the web if it would automatically launch the browser and searched for your spoken text (without you having to press search)!

Go to their FAQ page and click on the second, I think, about the ERROR and there is a link to two zip files.

Timeout error for me too. I couldn't even find the link to the zip files either, but I see that that wouldn't have helped anyway.

I agree, however it does give you the chance to make corrections to the search. If it was automatic and the search wasn't accurate this could get very frustrating. Maybe an option to turn this feature on or off would be nice.

I was fortunate to have it download and install without a hitch. I was quite impressed by the setup process, as it walks you through everything it needs to do (or have you do) and checks to make sure things are working before moving on.

I think it's a great idea, but I'm underwhelmed. The recognition, for me, isn't that great. I appreciate that it gets better over time, so this is fine.

Why I'm underwhelmed is that it's not a handsfree tool. You still need to do things on the device to accept, edit, or choose. For example, a "Note2Self" should simply send the e-mail upon me releasing the key. Granted, this would eliminate the ability to edit the text. But, if the recognition can get to the point where it's good enough for a Note2Self, that shouldn't be necessary.

I'd also like to see it be a full keystroke injection tool, where you get speak and it'd inject what you wrote into whatever app you're in. The FAQ addresses this (sort of). So, it's an idea for the future. Point is: simply opening an app by voice... is that really useful if you can't continue to use voice to operate it?

This said, I am impressed with the attention to detail in (as I said) the setup, the general interface, the configurability, and the fact that it serves as an excellent prototype for a full speech-controlled product. It's nice that they extended the speech recognition functionality in the LiveSearch app to other things.

One last thing: as far as I can tell, recognition does NOT occur on the device. What it does is captures what you're saying (I assume up to a relatively small limit especially if you don't have much free memory), send it to a server to be converted to text, sends the text back to the device, and then has the device perform the action. This can be quite slow, especially if you don't have a higher-speed connection. It also means that it doesn't work if you don't have data service.

At least that's what it seems.
