Docs To Go - How to CREATE docs using DTG standard (FREE)!!! -
06-25-2008, 11:10 AM
Right,
As promised, I have found a trick to let you create Word, Excel and Slideshow documents using DTG Standard (the one that ships with OS 4.5).
1. Go to your PC and get ready to send yourself an email to your BB email address. Make sure that your BB is set to receive emails via BIS / BES, and NOT Desktop redirector, as attachments do not always come through this way.
2. Call the email subject something like: WORD DOCUMENT TEMPLATE
3. Attach to the email a blank word document (.doc), and make sure the filename for the document is something like: WORD DOCUMENT TEMPLATE
4. Send the email.
5. Once it arrives on your BB, save it to your DEVICE MEMORY.
6. Now, whenever you want to create a word document from scratch on your BB, open DTG and select this document. Once you have typed it, go to MENU > SAVE AS... and call it whatever you want.
7. Repeat this for Excel and Powerpoint presentations.
ENJOY!
Neil

I did essentially the same thing. I created an empty document on my PC called "-EmptyDocument.doc" (so it shows up above any other document) and then transferred it using the Media Manager. It doesn't matter how you get it there. This works quite well for creating new documents. I'm really kind of surprised they didn't disable the "Save As" option in the standard edition.

That would be a silly thing to do what if you wanted legitimately to resave a file with a different name.

Get the upgraded version. Use the Menu in Docs to Go to "Register" and then you can download the upgraded free version.

Thanks for the tips, I register and upgrade to the (free) new version, create a blank word, excel, and powerpoint, and than drag and drop it to my media card, now I can create and edit all three types of file.

I'd actually be surprised if they did. DataViz is not known for being a bunch of pr*cks. I've been using their programs for years on the palm platform and all I have ever seen from them was continual effort to improve their product; tis why I have been holding off on purchasing any other similar program.
However, this is a different platform with which seems to come a different mentality, so who knows.

Edit comes with the standard version loaded with OS 4.5. However, you'll want to register and do the update (it's free.)

I registered but never saw any place to update. Also, the trick for creating a blank doc and sending it to you phone doesn;t work for Word 2007. I got an error that D2G Standard does not support Office 2007 products. Bummer.

You can save the files to your media card rather than to Device Memory...no need to use up Device Memory for this, and that way you still have them if you have to wipe your BB.

I just upgraded to version 4.5, my documents to go only contains 3 icons, UP, WordtoGO and slideshow to go. Is Excel available? Not sure what UP does except to bring it to the main screen.

Open Word To Go and register your copy. Then do the free upgrade. You will then get Sheet To Go.

When I send an excel spreadsheet to my BB, and try to save it, I get "File System Full" I have 41,123,631 file free. The file size is only 7k.
Any ideas?

Do you have a microSD media card? That's the best method.

No not yet, I did delete a few pics I stored on the device memory and I was able to save the document, I'm surprised with so much free space I was unable to save to memory before deleting the pics.
Thanks for your help.

I recommend getting a media card. Not using one, you take the risk of losing emails, sms and call logs.

Is the Premium Version of Docs To Go really $70?!? I was expecting $20 or $30 to upgrade to the Premium version, not $70!

No reason to post the same question twice, therefore I will posy my response twice
Quote:
Premium is still $70, they are giving PDF To Go for free (which is $30)... I am sure one of these days somewhere down the line they will eventually have a sale.
So I will be waiting for sale or when I actually do need it

For the first time I feel the future might hold something different for me. It's possible I'm fooling myself but I'm willing to take the risk.

Incidentally, you could also try out ExSafe which allows you to generate new documents, spreadsheets using Documents to Go, and store them in the cloud making them available to all users, whether on the Blackberry OS 4.5 or above, or on the Desktop.
