It works great for me on my 8700c as well. I didn't bother trying to download it yesterday when I read the google description saying that it was just for the Pearl. Thanks for posting the direct link.

I tried searching for a few things, and it got it right every time. This was very surprising, since I usually have a lot of trouble getting voice recognition systems to understand what I am saying. This is one of the perils of having a British accent in the US. Google did a good job on this one.

When I used it for the first time it asked me for permission to set up a udp connection to 216.239.51.126. I was a bit suspicious about this, but a quick lookup shows that 216.239.51.126 is kc-in-f126.google.com, so I let it go through. Hopefully they will use a name instead of an IP address for this after the beta period to make it clear that it is a google site that they are accessing.

Do I have to assign left key to an app to make it work?

Best,
Jaime

Hi All,

I reinstalled google maps 2.2.1 on my blackberry 8110 and it works perfectly now. The voice search is quite fast compared to others.

You don't have to do anything with your assignment for the left convenience key (or at least I didn't). I have my left convenience key set to turn bluetooth on and off. It still does this when I am not running google maps, but inside google maps it is used for searching. I just tried to see what it does when I leave google maps running in the background. My left convenience key works normally (controls bluetooth) there as well.

I installed this on my Sprint Blackberry Pearl 8130 running v4.3.0.127 and the program works fine, but the left convenience key does not bring up any voice commands. It just locks my phone, which is what I have that key set to do.

The convience key works for the search while in maps and then returns to normal when I get out of the program.

Works on T-Mobile 8820 with 4.2.2.193. I used the direct download link to install. Appears that you need to use the side convenience key like a push to talk button.

Your browser will identify the model of BB which is why nivas's link is what you need to use to download that specific version of the app.

I reinstalled the latest version using nivas' link and the convenience key still doesn't bring up any voice features on my 8130. Maybe it has something to do with my O/S version.

I installed the 2.21 with no problem. I am not getting the voice. Either because of the device, the OS, the fact that I deleted the .vad cod or I am simply NOT following the directions.

Is anyone getting a "Phone signal is too weak" message after inputting a voice search term?

I've successfully installed 2.2.1 onto my ATT 8310, OS 4.2 and got the voice search "Recording now..." message to pop up while pressing the side button, but after that, I get the above message. My signal is strong, and manually typing in a search pulls up results successfully.

I had the same message. Deleted the app, pulled the battery, and reinstalled. This seemed to fix that issue, now it works splendidly.

This worked for me, too. I did the 2.2.1 upgrade over the 2.2.0 version... but deleting and reinstalling clean did the trick for me. Thanks for the tip!

Try completely uninstalling the app and to a battery pull. Then download the link from this thread and install it. It works perfectly (now) on my AT&T 8310 (OS 4.2.2.194).

That's strange because Google itself is supporting the Pearl line (81xx) with this version. I can't imagine a difference between GSM and CDMA for this app...

What are the appropriate permissions? Does left key voice search still work if you have something assigned to the left key? I've got 'open contacts' on my left convenience key, and when I press it while GMaps is running, all i get is my contacts. I also tried it with the Gmaps search window open, and no dice.

Success on ATT 8310 (BIS, 4.2.2.170). Removed GMM 2.2.0, restarted, downloaded and installed 2.2.1. First couple of tries yielded "Phone signal too weak", but next few have all worked.

Was too lazy to browse through the chain from my Blackberry, so I made this tinyurl: (stupid forum software won't let lurkers publish URLs -- too bad for y'all.)

Edit: clean install and still having issues. When i search for say "Pizza", it shows the word searching in the top right corner but then i get an error message "Google Map Can't Connect". I made sure all permissions are set to allow. the Gmaps app works fine otherwise.

thoughts?

It would appear that the Voice Search doesn't work on the CDMA version of the 8130. It requires version 4.3, but if you look in the Google Help, About/Info it will improperly report you have version 4.2 of the OS. This is going to be on the Sprint, Verizon and Alltel phones. If there is any one else on a CDMA carrier and your 8130 won't voice search, check Help About and see if your OS is properly reported.

Folks having problems should go to the Help group for Google Mobile Mapsa and complain. There is already a thread on it.

Just ran across this over at Crackberry.com. I installed it on my 8100 running 4.2 OS, and the voice search works.

Google Maps 2.2.2

Google Maps has gone to version 2.2.2 for the Berry. It's still early days as this has just been released... no word yet on what features are added, or which bugs have been fixed... But no doubt there has got to be a few new things in there!

The download doesn't appear to be available from the usual download location YET... But you can download direct to your Berry here: Google Mobile - Maps

There are also a couple other new items of interest too.

Peace,

Kamau

They still haven't fixed the problems with CDMA 8130's. Voice command still doesn't work.

Thumbs up Google Maps Voice Search Working on VZW 8830! - 08-03-2008, 03:22 PM

For anyone that still cannot get voice search to work on their 8830 (or other device), try this:
  1. Install the latest version of Google Maps (http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v2.2....oss=1&eosr=on);
  2. Launch Google Maps 2.2.2; and
  3. Reset Google Maps (under the Help menu within the app).

I read about the "Reset Google Maps" on the Google Maps Mobile forum, and this is apparently the missing link!
