Google Maps 2.2.1 got VOICE search -
07-02-2008, 08:13 AM
Hi All,
Today I installed Google Maps 2.2.1. Surprisingly I found voice search feature now. I am not sure whether anybody posted this or not.
When we are in Google Maps, just hold the "Left Convenience Key" and it will allow you to do voice search. It's a cool feature. It didn't work successfully for me. It may work for others so I am posting this.
Regards

What do you mean by voice search? Entering address by voice command? No voice turn by turn instructions still right?
> Mods - suggest moving this thread to GPS section
Thx to all for the great advice!

Very cool. I was hoping they would follow in the footsteps of Live Search.
@Sheldon - This should stay right where it is, as many people use Google Maps without GPS.

When I go to Google Maps, version 2.2.0, not 2.2.1, is the version it asks me if I want to install.

The section is for 'GPS and Mapping'. Google Maps is most certainly a mapping application.

More interestingly - does the new version have turn by turn voice commands??
Thx to all for the great advice!

Hi All,
I just want to make clear that I am talking about Google Voice Search. It is similar to TellMe and Yahoo OneSearch Voice.
It is NOT voice turn by turn direction.
I think voice search feature is added newly in google maps 2.2.1 version. So if you uninstall and install the Google Maps again , you may find this feature.
After installing the new google maps, just open the Google maps and hold the "Left Convenience Key" to speak the business name like pizza etc. You have to be in Google Maps to use Voice Search feature.
"Left Convenience Key" button is located on left side of blackberry which is usually used for shortcuts. Check below link to locate the Left Convenience Key button
Make Your Convenience Key More Convenient : BlackBerry Edge
As I said earlier, I am able to say voice commands by pressing "Left Convenience Key" button. But the search didn't work for me.
Let me know if you guys have any doubts.

Thx for the clarification. In that case, it's not for me. Still need voice turn by turn instructions. My guess is that since I deleted VAD, the new Google feature wouldn't work for me anyway. Take care all!

Hi All,
This is not a joke. I am also surprised to see Google maps 2.2.1 version on my mobile this morning. May be at the time of my download, I got this version and later google removed that. I will post some screen shots of version 2.2.1 tonight.

Here is what I found on google about this subject.
This feature is experimental, which means a couple of things. First, similar to other voice-recognition technologies, the accuracy of voice recognition will improve over time as more people use the voice search feature. Second, the feature is currently only supported on 8110, 8120 and 8130 BlackBerry Pearl models in the US. Third, we'd love to get your feedback on it -- feel free to leave your comments below.

Looks like it's only supported for the 8110, 8120 and US version of 8130. That's probably why some of the phones don't come up with the version with voice search.
Yahoo has had this for about 3 months - wasn't too bad when I tested it on my Curve.

Works excellent on my 8700c AT&T. I'm pretty impressed. Searches take a few seconds. Tried 2 different voices (mine and my son's). I can't believe a beta app actually works.

Hi betterlate1,
It's not working on my pearl 8110. Do we need to do any permission changes ?
what are the steps you followed to make it work ?
Thanks

I emailed nivas post of the .jad file to myself. Clicked on the link in the email. Installed the app. It did confirm that 2.2.0 was installed and asked if I wanted to replace with 2.2.1. Once installed
Then held the left side button (the one I normally use to change profiles) spoke the word TARGET into my phone and released the button
Then a few seconds later this popped up
I am however running OS 4.2 not 4.5

OK, I have tried both the new Google Maps with Voice Search v2.2.1 and the new Windows Live Search Beta. Google Maps is much faster and seems (IMO) a lot lighter weight. Maybe my imagination but Live Search seems to be bogging down as expected from any Microsoft application...way too much code and functionality to be practical. Google Maps Voice Search is almost instant on my uncluttered 8700c and Live Search is, well...still searching. I highly recommend Google Maps with Voice 2.2.1
Maybe you want to move this post to the reviews forum?

When I went looking in the help section, google said it was only for the 8120 and 8130. No 8110.

Evidently OS 4.2 ONLY. Everyone with newer OS has problems. I am still trying it out and it is still working flawlessly. Really unusual for me.

If you download the .jad file, you have to jump through some hoops to create the .alx and .cod files to be able to load it with the desktop manager's app loader. There's a thread here somewhere about converting the .jad files to the .alx and .cod files... but never tried it.

I had success using my BB to email myself the link in post #23. It is a jad file but I'm sure someone could convert it to an alx/cod. But, you will need a data plan to use it anyway so you might as well do it all from the BB.
PS: Thanks nivas, this app is very COOL! Your good luck seems to be my good fortune.

Then try Live Search Beta. It may work better for you. I am assuming that it is designed for newer OS and devices. It is also free and also has voice search capabilities.
