Opera Mini (anyone have it working?) -
08-17-2005, 09:56 AM
Has anyone else had luck getting Opera Mini to run on the any BB? I was able to load it succesfully by grabbing one of the copies of the hifi version that are floating around and converting it to a COD, and loading it via javaloader.
The main problem I am having is that it uses soft-keys for commands, and I can't find a mapped equivalent on the BB. I have been able to use it (even though it loads slow) and get to the settings menu, switch the language to english, but I can't dismiss the settings windows to save the options.
Maybe that's more of a J2me on BB question, since the other devices I have it running on (Palm Tungsten T5) have either dedicated soft keys, or a touch screen. Is there a way to emulate soft keys present on most phones on a BB?
None of those commands seem to appear on the command menu when you click the track wheel, only close. It was my understand that most commands for j2me midlets were shoved into the trackwheel menu on the bb, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

Yeah, I did finally get it working. I started as you did, taking the high jad/jar and converting it to a cod and loading it onto the bb. And then, just as you discovered, it seems to only work with the soft keys.
So then, I took the low jad/jar, converted it to a cod, and loaded it onto the bb (Now I have two identical looking Opera Mini icons in the ribbon that I can tell apart only by remembering their location). Same thing.
But then, I went back and launched the high app again, and magically, the menus operate from the thumbwheel instead of softkeys. Yay!
Unfortunately, for me at least, there must be something unique about the bb (or maybe my bb) because the performance of the app is awful, nothing like the reports I've read for other devices. It's really really slow. Once pages render, they look fantastic. But they take ridiculously long to render; and while its rendering, I can't even switch to another app or operate the menu because it seems to be fully loading the CPU.
Another problem is that since I used the javaloader to upload just the cod (no alx/ali), I can't erase the app. It doesn't show up in Options->Applications, nor does desktop sync recognize it.
If more people can get it to work, please post your experiences, I'd really LOVE to find a way to get a really good browser working on my bb.

It would be very helpful if youse guys made mention of what BB model you are having success or failures with. I've got a 7105t that I will experiment with even though their website specifically states that Opera Mini doesn't work with the 7100v, per their tests. my initial download and run with the lo mem version supports their assessment but I will try again with the hi mem.

you won't find a version supported by/for the blackberry.
seriously, several users have tried to use this application and it's not that functional. when a version for RIM handsets comes out, then maybe we'll all have a go of it, but for now, just modify your browser settings if you need to speed up your browsing.
besides, most websites don't have all that much to offer that you can't already see.

I concur Penk
I tried both versions on the 7105t and although at times it looked like we were making some progress, Opera Mini is not ready for 7100 series BB. Actually with the new improvements in the BB browser (speed, much improved caching, image handling) that present in OS 4.1, I'd have to look real hard at a third party Inet app anyhoo.

I also experienced the 2 minute load up on my 7290. I tried on two 7290's. I don't think that I will keep using it, but I will give it a try for the next few days. I also got a friend to try on his 7520, but he decided to not use it, said it was too slow to load pages, which I agree!!

high memory version was too slow, got the low memory and it is fast. But if you are surfing and get an incoming phone call, then you will get a caught exception.
Overall, opera mini is

this program is a wast for bb users if you load their site on your black berry and try and download it. It will say that your device was not recongnized which means this was not developed with you in mind!
I got it to work with both the lite and full version on my 7100i but like everyone is complaining about it take forever to load and you might as well use the build in stuff b/c it's way faster!
just my .02!

I have it working flawlessly on my 7100i. I love it, its way faster then the OEM browser with all the same feature plus more.

7100i -

Very strongly recommended!
I installed the hi mem version on my bb7100i - it's lightning fast and much better than the OEM browser, even the new one.
Set to small fonts, a lot fits on the screen although you need to have pretty good eyesight to be able to read it
The softkey functions are basic, but work well (the low mem version doesn't have that at all), and there are some shortcuts, albeit cryptic to remember. Very nice is the home page feature.
But .... for browsing almost anything (including lots of sites the OEM browser conks out on, like the Nextel sites), it's great.

It works on my 7230, but the developers really need to incorporate support for the thumbwheel. It downloads pages pretty well on a GPRS connection, and the pages don't look to bad. It is beta, so the final product will differ from what's there now.

Yes, but not in the way you're thinking of. Portable Firefox is a version that you install on a USB memory key, which then allows you to use your own, personal copy of Firefox, with your preferred settings and bookmarks, on any computer. Very handy if you want to do "stealth browsing" at work!
But as for a version of Firefox for BlackBerries... I WISH! That would be awesome! Imagine if you could have tabbed browsing on a BlackBerry! Sweet!
But sadly, it hasn't happened... At least, not yet.
