are there any programs out there that make use of the gps functions of the blackberry?

i would probably develop something along the lines of fun, if i saw that there was interest..

does the gps constantly grab data if you leave it on? is there any way to find out if it's locked in on the satellites? is there a way to get a capture of the stream at any point?

it might be fun to play tag or something with gps..

or, set up an email bot that processes the info and posts it on your site.. like a where's waldo type thing..

if you had that running, if you bb was stolen, it would leave a trail wherever it went..

anyway.. there are a million things to do, i was just wondering how much interest there was in this stuff..

GPS available on the Nextel 7520 through telenav is the only one I know about..

Actually there is another application that would do more what sergio is looking for. MapQuest FindMe (also through nextel on the 7520). It does show your GPS position and you can show it to others on their phone or computer. The link is here http://www.mapquestfindme.com/mq/includes/faq.jsp

its actually something in development now for mapquest. it is *supposed* to be for the blackberry by mid 4th quarter. Also, has anyone else heard of the 7100i coming out?

There is another app out there called SPOT. do a search for spot gps. The program was pretty cool. It did grab data every 15 seconds or so. It would wipe out my battery on 7520 in about 3 hours.

Telenav is a great application and I have been using it since the latest version launched about 2 (?) months ago. Problem with Telenav - it's largely dependent on data service which would render it useless in the great outdoors or areas that has no or weak wireless coverage.

I've been looking into Trimble (http://www.trimbleoutdoors.com/) which seems like the ideal tool. At first, I was wondering why Nextel is retailing overlapping location based software but then I took a closer look at Trimble and realized that there are huge differences. bascially, if you want true GPS, I believe (will need verification) that Trimble allows true GPS without the need for data plan access; something Telenav does not have.

I've lost data connection a few times when on the road and it caused me to drive in circles for a total of about 45 minutes combined during all the times I have had this problem.....and at other times, Telenav gives me completely off the wall directions that has nothing to do with my current location while driving in midtown, New York City. Unofrtunately, I do not think that Trimble has turn by turn directions.

Bottom line is, if you plan on using your GPS for driving, it's best to plan ahead and have a navigator on long trips and depend on the GPS as a secodary unit. Most of the time, Telenav is good but during the times that it did not work, I was screwed since it sometimes takes a while (if at all) to get signal back.

PS: On a full charge, The BB 7520 lasts for up to 4 hours with Telenav constantly running.

Trimble is a trusted name when it comes to gps. I'm sure its a great product being that (trimble) is a common name found in a lot of aircraft today..
