Default Avantgo vs Viigo - 07-09-2008, 09:57 AM

Is it just my phone (8310) or is Avantgo a real resource hog? I installed it once and was very sluggish to move around and would not sync completely. I uninstalled it and I am trying it again.
Viigo on the other hand works great. I just have to add the content I want to it to customize it but I don't know what address to put in add channel.
I had like 13 meg ram free and I think with Avantgo its pushing like 5-6 free ram.

It seems like the second time around installing Avantgo now seems to be working better. I will try this out now over time report back my opinion.

Viigo to me took a lot of memory up on my BB, I miss it cause I liked the program. I use Google Reader like another user suggested but I don't like it as much as I did with Viigo. Never tried Advantgo though

Viigo is my favorite program on the bb, it's going to be hard to get me to switch from that one. I'd venture to say that it has me by the balls about as much as Jivetalk (i.e. I won't even download the competitors anymore unless I hear something spectacular).

Memory leak doesn't bug me, with lowering memory I have like 17 MB and I just restart every few days because I open so many programs at once anyways. Softreset comes in handy for me for that...

AvantGo has been nothing short of a disaster for me and my immediate and extended family. Viigo has had quirks but generally works great.

Between Treos and BlackBerry devices AvantGo has hogged resources to the point of device confusion, drained battery for no apparent reason, lost settings and data, caused other applications to flake out, etc.

To be fair when it worked it was great but after fighting it over time and across devices I've officially put it on my do-not-touch list.

Anybody recommend a version of Viigo that isn't too bad? Like memory leaks

I think just about all of them leak, so I don't think a newer version will help, I just freed up memory on mine. Correct me if I'm wrong please.

I've used both AvantGo and Viigo. I liked Viigo better, and found it much easier to include custom RSS feeds.

Since I'm working at home now, I even took Viigo off and use Google Reader for all of my RSS feeds.

I'm really looking forward to some of these newer devices with much more flash memory. Just my 2 cents worth, but I think RIM should provide a feature that would allow us to use micro SD cards for application storage. They shield a lot of the API calls from third party developers, so it would be really difficult for a vendor to be able to provide this.

Avantgo is great if you want full articles downloaded automatically like I do, so you can read them when out of coverage (like when I'm in the NYC subway). I had a problem with sync errors until I learned that it was due to a memory leak issue with AvantGo. I then learned that the leak problem (for AvantGo and other apps) could be remedied by just disconnecting the battery for a couple minutes periodically (e.g., daily) to free up the memory. Just have to make sure the memory doesn't get too low. If I do the battery on a daily basis (because I have AvantGo set to automatically sync each morning), then AvantGo pretty much stays free of sync problems. I was frustrated with AvantGo for a while until I figured this out. Now I consider it a great app again, even though it is a little annoying having to remember to disconnect the battery every day.

Viigo can use up some memory but with bold or a storm its not that bad, even after it takes 20 mb of ram I am stll left with 33-34 mb and back when I had my curve or pearl 30 mb was like heaven almost. Just lower your article count and don't have it refresh as much. Tried avantgo a while back when I first got my bold just to see what other apps could offer and I didn't life the interface enough to be able to use it like I use viigo.

Default Viigo & Memory - 12-03-2008, 08:39 AM

I tried my Viigo with shortcut key and it helps me a lot.
Try:
F button in Article Screen, helps you with forwarding this article
O or N button in Channel screen, help you move forwards/backwards channel

Anyone have the list?, maybe you can share it with us...
Actually I was looking for the "get full article" or "fetch article" button

Btw, regarding the memory,...
I thought there's a software that treats media card as extended memory and allows you to save & start application from media card...
I'll look for it, does anyone know anything about this?..
