Since I have received so many useful tips, tricks and apps from this site I thought I would give back. With my limited knowledge of coding for BlackBerry I did learn how to create web shortcut icons so users can select them directly from their icon list (aka ribbon bar) and it can invoke a predetermined browser instead of the default browser like the great app that exists and is available on the forums called Web Shortcuts by Jonathan Fisher.
To this end, I am offering to create web shortcuts that will reside on your BlackBerry icon list for the first 15 requests that are posted in this thread. There are not strings attached to the icons, I just want to give back to the community and see how much interest there is in this type of service as well. Below is information that I need to make the icon and have it function appropriately. I will then create the .jad, .alx and .cod file and post them in a zip file in this thread so they will be publicly available so I recommend not requesting anything to an Intranet site because it could expose information about your organization that you would not want exposed through the URL provided.
Here is what I need to create the icon:
Quote:
Icon Title (this will be what is displayed at the bottom of the screen when you scroll over the icon on the icon list)
e.g. Google Shortcut
URL (this is the web address that you want the icon to direct the browser to when selected):
e.g. http://www.google.com
Browser (which browser do you want to use? Options are Default, Internet (BIS), BlackBerry (BES), Wi-Fi, WAP):
e.g. Internet Browser
Attach a 32x32 picture for the icon. If no icon is attached I will use a default browser icon of my choosing.
All requests must be made in this thread!!! I will not accept any requests via PM and will ignore any requests via PM at this point.
Please also vote on the Poll at the top of this thread as well.
The Custom Web Shortcut will only work on OS 4.2.1 and above. OS version less than 4.2.1 will not be supported.
You can see an example of a web shortcut icon I have created in the following thread:
Please allow 1 - 2 business days for the icon to be posted. It may be sooner but no promises.
Notes and Disclaimers:
I reserve the right to reject any requests for any reason or terminate this offer at any time. I am not responsible for the URL provided and/or the copyright on any images provided. The responsibility of obtaining proper copyright reproduction authorization is the responsibility of the individual requesting the icon. I am not responsible for the use and/or any results of using the icon provided.

Can I reserve a request. I will have the .png within an hour or two?
Nick and others,
Please post the request with as much information as possible, I will likely not be able to build and distribute these immediately anyhow so if you post it and update it later with the missing information that should be sufficient. It may be 24 to 48 hours before I am able to produce the files and post them here.
Any changes please post in the original post by Editing not creating a new post and make a note that the post has been changed in the post itself and Bold it so it stands out.
Why not write a program that runs on the BlackBerry that creates the shortcut? Start it and it runs a wizard that asks the needed info - Icon Name, URL, Icon picture (from either a local file or URL) - and then compiles it into a COD which is then installed - with the name and icon built in.

Now THAT would be worth a few bucks!
That wouldn't be too bad cause then you could change it if you wanted to later on

The issue with this is that calls to the browser needs to be signed which can not be automated as it requires a password to be entered to sign the key. Jonathan Fisher makes a basic web shortcuts app but it always uses the default browser.
I'm not sure if the mobile site is any different, just the link to the straight MLB sports scores instead of having to click through ESPN.
I'm sure this would be wanted by more than just I, so although I'm not a huge user of shortcuts, I figured other people would appreciate this one - would probably also like the link to the football scores once that starts up.
Just in case you don't get enough custom icon requests!
p.s. -- all the icons I uploaded are looking very odd to me -- like they have a "Y" pasted on top of them. Not sure why. I will try from another browser and maybe re-upload them.
Sorry, couldn't get them to display correctly -- so here is a link to the custom icons for the sites above (plus m.facebook.com). The posting above was also edited to include a zip file with all six icons in it.
Please find attached the application loader (using desktop manager) version of the web shortcuts that have been requested.
I apologize to Satanux as the knol.cl icon had an error when I tested it today so I will post as soon as I get to my computer to sign the packages for release.
YouTube Canada shortcut is in the post after this since there was a number of file limitation on attachments
Please let me know if you experience any problems with these as I am still refining the code and my process for streamlining the development of this.
Also, please remember this is an "application" so if you have an IT Policy that restricts installing third party applications you will not be able install without removing the IT Policy.
I still have about 7 more that I will be giving away at this time so keep the requests coming.

Reason: updated BBBWAPIcon.zip
As soon as you get me the icon and the specific address you want I will be happy to make this for you. Not sure if you have a m. or wap. site for better viewing on the blackberry.
No problem, I know you had originally asked for 32x32, and I sent 36x36, but they have worked well for me in the past at that size. If that seems to be the issue I will resize it and send you a 32x32

That was the problem. Please post a 32x32 version so I can try both.
I've noticed that my image has a white BG now, and I believe it was originally transparent BG.
Nick,
I just tried the original and it works just fine in the 36x36 size (a little large for my taste but to each his own) but it is still a white BG. I did not even open the file in case there was some issue with opening it in my png software removing the transparency and it still shows up with a white background.
I am happy to recompile if you can provide an updated icon otherwise I probably won't post an update because there is not real change to warrant a the use of a signing key unless having a 36x36 is that important to you in which case I will re-sign and distribute.
I would prefer to figure out how to get the transparent working before I re-sign though as that is really what you are looking for.
I sent you a PM so we can take this offline to get it right and we can repost here when any update is final.
