try uploading the softwaer manually using your desktop manager. JMIRC is the best and is under active development.

mextel,

I agree with headtailgrep that jmIrc is the best program for the BlackBerry. Unfortunately, the last two versions (0.93 and 0.94 beta) are incompatible with the BlackBerry because the developer's new Java environment broke compatibility. You would need to download the 0.92 version of the jmIrc.jad file. It runs fine on my T-Mobile 7290.

The developer no longer has the 0.92 JAD file on his site, but I have it. According to the developer's website (http://jmirc.sourceforge.net/index.html), this is a GPL (General Public License) project so we should be able to put it on another site for an over-the-air BlackBerry installation. I would put it up, but the server I use doesn't support JAD downloads.

Does anyone have a server that supports JAD downloads that we can use to host the 0.92 file?

A generic host won't work. I tried a bunch of them. It's not a question of just downloading the file. The host has to be configured correctly for .JAD and .JAR files. If it isn't, your BlackBerry won't be able do an over-the-air installation.

Another option, that headtailgrep mentioned, is to manually upload the file using your desktop manager. That's also a bit complicated, and I have no experience there. Maybe someone could take the 0.92 JAD and JAR files (I have both) and create the .ALX and .COD files necessary for an easy installation from the desktop.

That was another question I had which was if someone would be able to create an .alx and .cod files out of the jad and jar files you have.

Yet another option is to ask the developer to host the 0.92 jmIrc.jad file again on his website, so Blackberry owners can continue to use his fine program.

I think the step-by-step instructions are on this forum somewhere. Again, I haven't tried it, though I assume it can be done.

Thanks, panaph0bic. When I try it, the installation screen comes up, so it looks like it should work. I didn't want to take that last step and overwrite my current installation.

Just to make it simple for anyone who wants to install this, go to http://www.iiox.com/bb/jmirc/jmIrc-0.92.jad with your BlackBerry browser, and you should be able to install it directly from there.

I'm also running BWC. Do you get the error right away, or do you get it after you select "Download" from the installation screen?

Here's another thing you could try:

(1) Change the Content Mode in your BlackBerry browser to "WML only"
(2) Point the browser to http://www.iiox.com/bb/jmirc/jmIrc-0.92.jad
(3) If that doesn't work, point the browser to http://www.iiox.com/bb/jmirc/jmIrc-0.92.jar
(4) Don't forget to put the browser's Content Mode back to "WML & HTML"

That strategy worked for me when I was trying to download Gmaps. You can sometimes install from a JAR file if both the JAD and JAR files are there.

Bummer. I'm out of fresh ideas at this point. If anyone is able to install 0.92 from panaph0bic's site, that might indicate it's a configuration issue with your BlackBerry rather than a configuration issue with the site.

Maybe someone else could try to host it from a JAD friendly site. Or, as I mentioned before, you might contact the developer and ask him to include the .092 JAD file as a download option. You could tell him this issue comes up regularly in the forum and that we would be happy to point BlackBerry users to his website.

I had the same problem. I tried to download the JAD, and it gave me a 907 error. I tried the JAR file and got an error. I tried to download a second time, and it worked and installed.

It may be a finicky IRC server. They're up and down all the time. It sometimes takes multiple tries to get through.

You might start with the "beginner" channel on UnderNet.org. You could try any of the following servers with a 6667 port: Amsterdam.NL.Eu.UnderNet.org, fairfax.va.us.undernet.org, Miami.FL.US.Undernet.org, or Sterling.VA.US.UnderNet.org. You should be able to get through on one of them. Keep in mind that at anytime one or more of these servers could be down.

Here's the website for the beginner's channel on UnderNet.org: www.ircbeginner.com. The site is a good introduction to the highs and lows of IRC.

Visit www.ircbeginner.com with your desktop browser. It works fine from my desktop when I click the link in the previous sentence.

This is what a jmIrc profile might look like:

Profile name: Beginner
Nick: mextel
Alternative nick: mextel1
IRC server: Amsterdam.NL.Eu.UnderNet.org
IRC server port: 6667
Channels: #beginner
Username: mextel
Real name: joe mextel
Server password: mexpass

You don't have to have a password to use the beginner channel, though it does open up some important features.

Here are two more you can try:

I have downloaded the version that works for the BB and I like it. Trouble is - how do I get it into the background (like IM+) and go do other things like email without killing the connection?

Have you tried using the Alt+Escape key combination to switch programs? That should let you check your messages, browse, and run other applications without losing your IRC connection. I just tried it, and it works fine on my 7290.

The developer has announced version 0.94 and is asking BlackBerry users to try it. Here's the link: http://jmirc.sourceforge.net/index.html.

I just upgraded from 0.92 to 0.95 on my 7290 with 4.0.2 OS. The 0.95 version is running fine.

I have been trying to connect to efnet using jmirc 0.95 but every server I've tried will not allow me to connect. irc.lightning.net says I have to install ident, and irc.prison.net just disconnects me but gives no reason.

Help?
