On my old music phone it would show what song was playing when you go back to the main screen just seeing if anybody knew something like that for the BB

No, not that I know of. You can hit menu and select "Now Playing."

Try flipside or miutunes(?)... Threads can be found on both

Edit : whilst not on "home screen"... does all you need within app.

I don't think you'll find anything like an active media window on the Home Screen...
