Default google mobile app for blackberry` - 09-12-2008, 03:19 PM

On their mobile forum (Official Google Mobile Blog) google announced that they have new mobile application. However, it doesn't seem to work on the 8320 when i try to DL-it. Has anyone managed to get this to work on the 8320?

Glorified launcher disguised as an "app".

e.g., You'll still need Google maps installed to have the maps work.

Do you have any of the apps installed, as above maps or the email app.

Exactly! Why do I need a > 300k app to launch my google maps and gmail, and give me a shortcut to google reader website? I installed, saw what it actually does, and immediately uninstalled.

That was my impression before I removed it from my bb.

Does it perhaps indicate when a new version of one of the other apps is available? If it doesn't do that, then it seems worthless to me, as others have said.

I agree, but I still have it on my 8310 because it makes search slightly faster. But that's the only thing I use it for so I will prob be uninstalling pretty soon...

It's OK but the damn thing stays resident in the background taking up memory after you use it. The old goodle search "app" would loauch your browser and close itself down.

I am also puzzled--- this seems to be a remarkably useless application. I thought at least it would notify me of an update to one of the other applications--- it doesn't. I noticed a new version of google maps was available--- I opened this new app and it didn't say anything. Seriously, what is the point or utility of this new application? Uncharacteristic of the usually outstanding Google product-- but this seems like a waste of memory.

To me it's value is in the auto-notification of updates.

If a launcher and optimised search are included without too much memeory cost, that's ok.

But the updater it replaces (how much smaller was that app anyway?) was also very slow in notifying about updates. Maybe Google wait a while after release before encouraging LOADS of people to update via the updater notification...

It's supposed to:

Quote:
* Fast Google search - enter queries without waiting for a browser to load
* Search history - easily access and amend your previous queries
* Google Suggest - complete queries with less typing
* Easy access to Google products for your phone - click once to download and install our applications for BlackBerry, and get immediate access to our web-based services
* Google Apps support - get direct links to your Google Apps Calendar and Documents/Spreadsheets (select Menu, Options, Use Google Apps Domain: yes, and then enter your domain name)
* Update alerts - learn about new versions of downloadable Google mobile applications and upgrade with just one click (Google Mobile App replaces Google Updater for BackBerry)
Also the new mail app allows for multiple accounts. I guess you can probably download them separately.

I liked the Google Mobile Updater better. The updater put the various icons on your screen, then you could arrange how you wanted them. Once click I was to my web albums, to my calendar, to the news, to notebook. With Google Mobile App. it doesn’t add the icons so the google apps I use are now either two or three clicks away.

Well, I have the Maps and Mail things on my home screen, but I think I know what you mean. I never used the web based apps anyway, though.
