From VeriChats Website.
What is BES and what is MDS? Do I need these?
BES stands for BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The BES server provides access to your corporate email from your handheld. More information about BES can be found here.
MDS means Mobile Data Services, which is explained on this web page at RIM. MDS provides TCP/IP connectivity for your handheld and allows you to use applications beyond email and WAP-browsing. A variant of MDS is called MDG, which stands for Multimedia Data Gateway. An MDG is a public MDS server and is provided by your wireless carrier. Currently, only Nextel and Telus provide a free MDG with their service.
VeriChat for BlackBerry currently requires a BES server (except for Nextel and Telus devices), and requires that MDS be enabled for your account on your BES server. A version of VeriChat that will not require the BES server is currently being developed.
My company does not have a BES. How do I use VeriChat?
You may want to use a Blackberry device with OS 3.8 or higher on a carrier that supports direct Internet access.
Or, you may want to use a hosted BES solution. There are several providers that will give you BES/MDS for a monthly fee. These include: MyBlueberry, MailStreet, eOutlook, Lanlogic and others. Some more information about these can be found at the BlackBerry Club.
Alltel does not provide Wap or Direct Ip access. If it is working it will stop eventually.
