I've been participating in the beta test since v5.0. This reader works great; I just hope I get a discount on the released version

Question mobipocket problems - 09-20-2005, 11:03 AM

I am having problems getting mobipocket beta up and running. I have the app in the blackberry (7250), but cannot get books or demo to upload to BB. I have on my laptop the Palm desktop from an old Tungsten I still use occasionally and the demos get loaded into Palm quick install. Any help would be appreciated! Also, any idea of cost of app once released?

Sounds like your *.prc files are being associated with the Palm desktop software. Try dragging the *.prc file onto the sendbookmp program (or right click the *.prc file and 'Open With...', 'Select the Program in a List...' and select sendbookmp). sendbookmp is the application that transfers the MobiPocket books onto your BB.

When you unzip the Mobipocket beta, you will see an "Install" batch file that you need to run (double click). After you run that install batch file, just double click on one of the prc files and the installer will pop up and you can install to your BB.

Mobipocket allows you to read ebooks on your handheld device.

Just wondering with the books, could you also look at comic strips? I ask this cause I would like to read the old Calvin and Hobbes books on the BB, couldnt read a whole book due to eye strain.

You guys were right on. Got demos in. Has anyone used Mosby's Drug Reference ebook. The demo doesn't really show how easy it is to move b/t different medications so it's hard to know if I would be able to use it in the way I wish to. Also, mobipocket website says BB software works with trade ebooks...what are they?

This is working great for me, I have loads of free text ebooks from the gutenberg project which I have converted to .prc with the converter mobipocket has!

Mobipocket is one of many eBook Readers available. An eBook is an "electronic book". There are many readers and kinds of eBooks, Mobipocket reads *.prc files. You must load your BB with the application supplied with Mobipocket Lite for BB.

If you devour books like I do, eBooks can satisfy even the hungriest reader. There are tons of free books and you can buy just about any new released books as well. Some Authors/Publishers do not release some books for different reasons, but the few who do not publish electronically are few are far!

The readme says you can only view 'Trade Titles'. I have absolutely no idea what this means!

That said I am using the beta to read books I've bought through the site - so yes you can read books bought on the Mobipocket website (but possibly not *all* books bought?).

Unhappy index schmindex... - 09-28-2005, 12:52 PM

I received an email from tech support that the current beta doesn't support books with "indexes." Not sure what that covers although it would cover the drug reference I was considering.

Hey guys im new on here. Just got my BB 7100i and I must say this thing is off the meatrack!! I just installed Mobipocket on it but are there any sites where I can DL free ebooks of newer titles? Datacafe is cool but im not into classic literature.. Ive been using Shareaza to dl .pdb files on my old Palm Pilot and thank god Mobipocket can read that format .. But Shareaza takes forever to DL a .pdb file and the choices are pretty limited to what the other user has.. Thanks for any help you all can give.. LONG LIVE THE BLACKBERRY!!

You can also get many SciFi books at www.baen.com. Any of their new titles can be purchased and they do have a library of free books. They can be downloaded in several formats including *.prc files.

A couple of questions.
The Lite version says it does not support books with indices. I tried downloading the free converter program, and while it works on the desktop, I get that error on the BB and says it wont run.

I have a number of .pdb files which I bought from PeanutPress / Fictionwise and which I used to read on my PPC platform. Is there a way to convert these to .prc format?

The latest alpha release (5.1) supports the Index View in dictionaries - not sure if this is what you're after. It's on the development page:

So how do I use MobiPocket Reader to view my .doc and .pdf files. I understand I can purchase, download, and read eBooks but early in the thread this app was reccomended to view .doc & .pdf files. So how is that done?

hmm... MobiPocket 5.1 works on my Cingular 8700c but it's unlocked and using Telstra 4.1.0.309 but I would thin if it works on 309 it should work on 304. I can download and read ebook stuff but not .pdf or .doc (which is the only real reason I downloaded MobiPocket. In another thread someone said they used it to read .pdf's & .doc's, but I can't do that.

You may have done this already but here's what I did:

1. got to link and download/save to BB http://www.mobipocket.com/dev/beta/blackberry.asp

2. unzip

3. USB BB to PC, use APP Loader to ADD mobireader.alx

4. select on BB & grant http connect priviledge

5. do whatever set-up & register required (can't remember this)

6. download/save some free doc (I got demo Paradise Lost) follow instructions

If you have done all this, please list your exact error, make sure you get V. 5.1, I am fairly new to BB as well but this is what I did and it works just fine, perhaps you missed a step or hit a wrong button, did you clear it all out before trying again? Just making suggestions...

it won't even let me get to that part...it asks me to downgrade my Blackberry OS, and I don't wanna do that..there has to be some way....

should i back up everything, downgrade, install the app, and then restore?? u think that would work?

When I connect via USB cable, I put in my key lock code of my BB in my laptop, and then i click next, and then the dialog box asks me: would you like to keep current os (recommended) and the second option is do you wish to downgrade OS in order to install application?

I'm sorry if I am not understanding but please help me. It sounds like the downgrade question is coming from Desktop Manager before you even get a chance to select the mobireader.alx for loading. Question: What happens if you say <yes> to keeping current os? Also is the Application Loader Icon visable in the Desktop Manager display (there should be three icons one of which is app loader)

I have deleted MobiPocket Reader. It's nice that it's free but it doesn't help me with doc & PDF's so I guess I'll just use MemoPad & <select>, <copy>, & <paste>.

There's no good standalone PDF reader for BB yet, we're still waiting. There are stopgap solutions that I hear work (eOffice or mailing them to yourself?) but we don't have a real PDF reader. :(

BTW all, here are a pair of sites with a lot of free books that are Mobipocket friendly:

http://mnybks.net/
http://www.baen.com/library/

The second is Sci-Fi mostly, the quality is good -- I'm reading 'A Hymn Before Battle' from the second site right now...

Thanks for your response. Sucks I would love to be able to pack a bunch of ebooks on my BB -beats carrying around the actual hardbacks/paperbacks... Especially when riding the train back and forth to work.

Well, such "PDFized" books can be read by MasterDoc by Dynoplex. Trial is available at http://dynoplex.com/masterdoc.shtml
Also, if have ebooks in MS Word or txt format (there should be lots of on the web) you may transfer them to your BB using eFIle and use either eWord or eFile ePad viewer to read them.
