Default MiniMoni and firmware 4.5 or higher - 02-18-2009, 02:10 PM

Dear all,

as I receive a permanent stream of mails on that topic I would like to give a small status on that.

It's true that you can install version 1.01.03 of MiniMoni on a device with a firmware version 4.5 or higher. But: MiniMoni will not monitor the traffic in the right way.

The reason is simple. The API calls used by MiniMoni were changed by RIM in 4.5 and higher. Instead of getting the number of bytes they now provide the number of "blocks". These blocks have a length of 1024 bytes I suppose, but I have no proof for that. The main problem however is that you never know to which degree these blocks are filled.

I have a early beta running on my device trying to fix this issue. The results are not very promising. As long as you produce mail or web traffic the result is more or less reliable, although it is not as precise as it was before. If you
use Instant Messaging the result is completely different. As only small amounts of data are transferred at a time MiniMoni counts much to much traffic. In some cases I had reported 900 K by MiniMoni where my provider reported 100 K per this day only.

Another topic was mentioned in some posts here. It concerns the counting of WiFi traffic. In 4.2 and below the API call did return GPRS/EDGE traffic only. No WiFi is included. Although you are able to detect by program, wether you are in WiFi coverage or not you never can be sure that no GPRS traffic is generated in that case.

So I have currently no glue if and when I can publish a new version.

May be somebody in the community has any idea - please don't hesitate to drop me a line. I'm open to every suggestion.

Best regards

AxelE

Hey Axel, good to hear from you.

Thanks for the explanation of what you are faced with in updating your application for 4.5+.

Personally, I would rather have an estimate of what data I have used, than nothing at all. And I would rather have that estimate err on the high side than on the low side. In my case, I am not on an unlimited data plan, BUT I am on a fairly high cap plan which I have not come close to reaching [yet]. If MiniMoni keeps me informed roughly as to what my data useage is, it'd be certainly better than what is "in my head". So being out by 100 MB at the end of the billing cycle isn't as important as knowing I was close to hitting my 6 GB cap.

If testers are needed, please do not hesitate to call on me.

PS - a small request: may we have the option of choosing which directory we would like our data logs stored in? That would keep the root directory of the SD storage card clean.

Does anyone use MiniMoni with the Bold? Can we do something with the graphs? Letters are unreadable :(

If that would be the only problem - that can be fixed fast. But it would not help you, as the counting would still be wrong. So I'll work on fixing the counting engine first before making the GUI adaptations for the BOLD or the Curve 8900.

Thank you

The Data Tracker suffers from the same problem/limitation that MiniMoni faces, as explained in Axel's first post. That said, they both work (I am also using a beta of MiniMoni -- and don't ask) and I suppose some data tracking is better than no data tracking.

I believe that Axel wants to release an accurate application and currently there isn't a good way to do so.
