YouMail application updated - Version 0.95.1 -
02-20-2009, 01:32 PM
Some highlights.
1. Updated icons.
2. Font remains bold regardless of message status.
3. Settings available now.
4. Defaults to storing messages on phone.
5. Settings page opens VERY slowly.
6. Limits message storage to a max of 100 or 10MB, whichever comes first.
7. Contact upload now works and provides a visual status for each contact.
All in all it is a good update. After I changed the settings to store message MP3's on the card instead of device my phone hung and I had to pull the battery but on restart the messages were moved and the memory reclaimed.

Storm users after downloading make sure you change the settings to use the handset or speaker as the initial settings don't work.

On the Curve and Pearl the envelope icon alignment is off. The top of the icon pushes up through the bottom line of the previous message. All in all, not bad. I have reinstalled VyMail and have been comparing the two over the past week or so. I still prefer YouMail's in house application.

Thanks for writing this. I have been using VyMail and really liking it. I was curious if YouMail improved their-own app. Are you saying you like YouMail a bit better (it look as though you are using the 8100. I am wondering if that is true for the 8900)?

I do prefer the YouMail app and I think it really comes down to the fact that YouMail downloads the MP3 file for new messages automatically and VyMail downloads when you go to listen to it. I know that is being really picky, but I hate hitting play and having to wait for the file to download and then play. I would REALLY like for message forwarding to work in YouMail, but it still doesn't.
These are things that VyMail may well add in the future, but for now the auto download thing wins me over. The VyMail app is about 160k and YouMail app is about 195k. Download both and give them a try. I have and 8130 and my daughter has the 8930. She loves YouMail on it.

Quote, I agree being able to use the memory card to store messages is also huge in this update, well and the fact you can actually get to the menu on the storm!

Wow - this application is a total disaster on the Storm.
Regardless of compatibility mode, the keyboard comes up, it doesn't rotate and for some reason, the screen calibration gets all screwed up.
Very, very disappointed. Sticking with vyMail.
Verizon 7250 > 8703 > 9530 (returned) > 8703 > 9630 #1 > 9630 #2 > 9630 #3 > 9630 #4 < perfect so far!

Here is what makes this really disappointing to read. Right from the YouMail website:
Quote:
Application Requirements
* Requires Blackberry OS
4.3 or higher
(includes BB Storm support)
* Data plan (for downloading
voicemails)
* Optional text plan (for auto
download vs.
on-demand sync)

I prefer VyMail personally. When I listen to a message in VyMail it takes away the Voicemail icon, YouMail applicaiton does not. This might be why VyMail does not download until you are ready to listen as it changes the VM indication at this time. If so I will wait the 10 seconds or so.
VyMail also provides an icon indiciation (red dot/star) when you have new messages. YouMial does not.
Thanks,
Mark

Be it on YouMail's end or Verizon's, the message waiting indicator isn't supported for me so that isn't an issue. I get you on the asterisk that VyMail adds to it's icon when you have new messages, but between the missed call indicator and the SMS indicator I can take it or leave it.
I do hope the VyMail guy keeps going with his application. My son much prefers it and I think my wife leans that way as well.

Sticking with VyMail for now. My own preference, not a scientific approach by a long-shot.

Huh? What makes it disappointing is that the software doesn't work well on the Storm. Period.
vyMail will have auto audio download soon. I'm sticking with vyMail. It works.

I'm not sure what the issue is, it works perfectly on my storm. Take it out of compatibility mode and it will rotate. Change the preferences to handset and it will play. Auto download works fine. I love Vymail and have used it since it came out but this app just surpassed VYmail in usability on my storm.
I have deleted VYmail. Youmail finally got it right.

Tried YouMail's app, no go. Staying with VyMail because it works as intended.

I removed vymail today and am trying the youmail app on my Bold, so far it seems to be running fine with no problems. I'll know more and more importantly if it has a memory leak by monday.

Audio Option : Headset then Handset; still functions as Headset then Speaker, and will not play through the handset. Upload of contacts still bombs, main screen icon still looks like it was drawn by 10 year old, no functional icon update when new vmail, no on the fly choice between headset, speaker or handset.
The only upside I see to the YouMail app is auto download, and saving to the Media Card.
Sticking with VyMail for the time being.

@Shaun Yea I'd like to see a better icon as this one sucks, I'd also like to have some notification of a new VM like VyMail allowed, I'm going to continue to mess with the YouMail app for a week or maybe less, depending on battery or memory leakage.

I'm playing through the handset fine and the contact upload finally works right for me. The icon and on the fly choice would be nice though.

Would be nice if you could download voice mails that are over the 60 second barrier. Everytime I try to listen to a longer voice mail in either app they complain of network errors or http entity too large. But yet, I can open the mp3 that's delivered in an e-mail to my device so it obviously can be done.
Ohh well, at least with this latest version it works with my 8900 now! Before I couldn't even open the voicemails......

No, it is not push. I am not certain how long the polling interval is, but it is not push.

Wirelessly posted
And now there is version 0.95.2. Still no release notes, change logs or any other indication of what is new or fixed.

I am on a Pearl and I have exactly one message currently that is over 60 seconds (117 seconds), Both the YouMail app and VyMail play it just fine.
