If you're looking for what I think you're looking for then try HelloWorld. Free OTA download from www.freek.ca

In addition to HelloWorld, you might check out J2MEMap at http://landspurg.net/J2MEMap/index.html.

BB too slow -
11-03-2005, 08:07 PM
The current crop of BB's is too slow to make Mapping/GPS programs useable. I have a 7250 and it's painful waiting for the maps to load.
Maybe the new 8700 will have enough memory and processor speed.
I have Helloworld and Berryvine Companion and they are too slow to be useful.

Hello,
I am the author of J2MeMap.
Currently, the main issue is not really about power of the blackberry by itself, but more the download speed. From my experience, it seems that the download through blackberry seems to be much slower than the download let's say with another J2ME device, like a cell phone. This might be because of the various equipment (BES or others), and probably not only because of the speed rate, but the time to set up the http connection....Anyway, I have a new version under development who uses the local file system to cache image data, this could speed up a lot things for frequently used datas....

This one has a satellite maps mode too -- so it's like Google Earth in your pocket (it actually uses the same images found on Google Earth).
It's slow except on faster models like the 7250 or the 8700. The BlackBerry CPU is often very slow on older models, making it slower than other cellphones when doing simultaneous downloads and processing. But this isn't the case with some of the faster devices (7250 uses a 250Mhz CPU and 1X upgradeable to EvDO .... and the 8700 uses a 312 Mhz CPU and EDGE). The new devices are a pleasure to use with online mapping software as map graphics tiles load very quickly...

It has more to do with the BlackBerry's inefficiency in multitasking between data transfers and rendering. Notice that often the web browser is still rendering even after it finishes downloading? I'm a developer as well.
This is solved with the faster CPU BlackBerry devices with 250Mhz or faster, such as the 7250 and 8700. The CPU can now keep up much better with the incoming data. And it is now pratical to even multitask writing an email while a huge webpage or other data is downloading in the background on the various faster models.

If you are looking for directions take a look at Berry411. It taps into Google local and provides driving directions and maps - though the maps are pretty small on my 7230.

J2MeMap runs rather decently on my 7250, actually - takes a minute or two to load a map but once it's up it scrolls rather smoothly

My 7100i runs both Mologogo and telenav, and its less of a machine than the 7520. Maps load nice and fast. gps pick up is speedy after you get a first fix. And if u need directiosn TeleNav is the way to go, not cheap at $10 a month but a very very good option.

It's a great tool, but until it becomes "quicker", I'm not about to invest any money in it.

I just loaded your app, the GPS version and the non-GPS version. I can't get either to work. The GPS version won't start, and gives the error cannot find "net_rim_locationapi". (I'm using an Alltel Blackberyy 7250 and I have location services turned on) When I load the non-GPS version, it start the app, and says loading, but images ever appear. I see on your website a remark about Google Maps changing. Is this fixed, or am I doing something wrong?
