Public Beta open for SMS Viewer -
05-08-2009, 08:26 PM
Dear All,
We've been working on a cool new app for SMS! (see the attached image for illustration) Following the private beta we had on the forums, the app is now open for Public Beta.
In case you are interested in trying out a pre-release app then please proceed to www.getempower.com to install the product. Installing from the web will also ensure that I can notify you when the app goes live.
In case you want no notification, just point your BlackBerry Browser to www.getempower.com/beta/sms/ to install the app directly.
Looking forward to your feedback, comments, suggestion etc..
Pvt Beta users can install this version (v0.98) over their existing version.
Best!
Ani

I need to give it time. I like how it shows emoticons and I like how it is pretty customizable. I wish you could change the background image.

I like this too. I was able to customize it and remove the background, and just have black text on a white background. One thing I do wish is that you could mark whether a text was incoming or outgoing.

Yeah, I messed around with that too, changing from Pattern to Color. But I wish there were more images to choose from when selecting Pattern. I agree with the incoming/outgoing messages too.

Could you add a configuration option for the header text? The text is too large, and the phone type [(Mobile)] and the phone number [+1 (623) 51x-xxxx] are overlaid...

How much will this app cost when it is released? Hopefully free haha.
Does this work on a 8800 with the latest OS? I have a 8800 and I installed it, it shows up on my "desktop" but whenever I click on it, nothing happens.

Background Color, Incoming Outgoing SMS markers -

True, we have two options for background.
Pattern - in here you can select images for the background.
Color - in here you can set your background to some color.
Also, the incoming / outgoing sms identification is already there, it will work for all ur smses send/received after the app has been installed. For sms sent/received before the app was there, it has no way to tell. Try sending/receiving a few sms and you will see different markers on them.
Best,
Ani.

Thanks, I gave it a try. I found a long delay between the time I pressed the Menu button and the time the menu actually appeared. I didn't time it, but anything less than instant seems slow since most menus pop up instantly. I would guess it took nearly two seconds for the menu to appear on my 8130 (4.5.0.138).

Try a battery pull, then look in your download folder.
You really won't see an app per se, just open an SMS message.

I am running the same OS on an 8330 and there does seem to be a delay. On the QWERTY keypad I can just press R to reply and F to forward. I don't need to use the menu key really. I don't know if this will work with the SureType devices.

I was wondering about this earlier because I also thought I had to open some kind of application for this to work. But yes, it shows up on the Storm as soon as you open a SMS.

Open up an SMS message, press the Menu Key and select Options. All the customizations are there.

It appears that this is now included?
I do find it a bit sluggish on my 8310 but I like the overall view of the SMS messages. I keep playing with all of the different colors and settings.

how do i reply to the thread in the sms viewer? when i attempt to reply, I'm reverted back to the native viewer (and only my original sms, and the reply are in the empower sms viewer). I would like to continue the thread back and forth. does my question make sense? not sure what I'm missing here

When you reply it does revert back to the native SMS application for the message you type. AFAIK, this viewer is only for messages sent/received not for messages being composed.

i understand that it's not for messages composed. What i'm saying is that I get a reply, and can see in the sms viewer, but can't reply within sms viewer. Instead, i'm kicked out to the native viewer. this prevents me from seeing the entire thread (replies on both sides)

When I get a message and it opens in the SMS viewer, I press the R key to reply. It takes me to the native app, but I still see the thread of SMS messages below.

same here. I can hit R (or BB button and reply) to reply with no problem. However, when I go back in the sms viewer, i only see my original sms and the response...that's it...nothing more...nothing more to the thread....this can only be seen in the native viewer....??

Ahh, I see what you're saying now. I do not have that issue. When I go back into the message I see the entire thread. Have you tried a battery pull?

actually, on second thought, i can see all posts back and forth...but only when i'm receiving. In other words:
i post a sms, and receive one back (both can be seen in the sms viewer). Then, if I post back, i will STILL only see the first two posts. I won't see the third sms post until I receive one back from the same person. make sense?

Correct, it's not a threaded SMS app. mfritzin, is that what you're asking? If so, then that's why I don't completely follow your questions.

I believe it IS a threaded sms app. jsconyers, to answer your question, i'm simply clicking on the sms in the BB sms. it opens and goes to the sms viewer, but i can only see what i've received. (except my original sms). am i expecting too much (and don't fully understand the purpose of the app)? I was thinking that I would be able to sms back and forth and see a continual thread of the converstion, which would essentially take the place of the native viewer (but actually simply integrating with it).

ok, i got it. I guess I was under the wrong assumption then. I've been reading many, many posts recently about how BB users would love an app similar to the iphone, treo, etc that would allow people to communicate via threaded sms's. the app would have a nicer interface as well, instead of the 'DOS-looking' interface that currently exists. I apologize for my confusing questions. I'll continue my search...

No, it is not a threaded SMS application. It will show SMS messages just like the native app, it only gives it a more customizable interface.
