Default blackberrry gamin app - 05-11-2009, 10:34 PM

i am a new user to the blackberry world and though it was a good idea to pay the 99 dollars for the garmin app....now my only problem with this is that fact that i cannot use it because it keeps telling me that i need to add device to pair?? I am clueless as to what that means.... i was under the impression that i payed the 100 dollars for this and the gps that i thought was suppose to be part of this phone would be compatible with garmin and i would just be able to punch in an address and go?? am i wrong or do need to actually go out and purchase a garmin for the app to work??/ all in all i just need a little guidance

thanks,
devin

Wirelessly posted

If your Blackberry doesn't have built in GPS, you will need to get a Bluetooth GPS unit. Freedom makes a great keychain one.

Verizon has some kind of "software lock" on the gps' in their BB units. Only the newer Storm allows the gps to be used with some 3rd party software. Your device can either use Verizon's Navigator (about 10/month) or BBMaps. I am guessing your device does have some gps but I don't know. My 8830 uses a bluetooth but I have not decided on garmin yet.

You will need a gps bluetooth as suggested above. Garmin sells a package of their software and their bluetooth gps device but you can use other bluetooth pucks (as they are called).

Sorry for the bad or partially bad news.

Your problem is not with Garmin. Verizon Wireless chooses to limit the functionality of their BlackBerry devices that come with GPS radios. You are limited in your software choices. As was stated above, you can subscribe to their Verizon Navigator product for ~$10/month, or you can use the included BlackBerry maps application without further cost.

At this point, since you've already purchased the Garmin application, I doubt that the reasons stated above will qualify you for a refund. Your other option is to purchase an external bluetooth GPS device for use with the Garmin application. The pairing issue you are seeing is the Garmin application desperately searching for a GPS device, since it's unable to use the internal one, it is asking your for details on an external.

Lame, blows, etc... but there's not much of anything you can do about it unfortunately.
