Any Advice for Verichat on a 7290 on Cingular's network? -
12-29-2004, 12:05 PM
I can't seem to get it to work. I am on 3.8 and use BWC. I have added all the Cingular APN, Username and password information referenced in Mark's post but am still getting a
"could not open tunnel - failed"
or
"Could not find service book entry for"
error depending on whether I select "Force MDS" in the opptions. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Yea I actually got mine all set up today, I called Cingular but they weren't any help.
Within the TCP settings.
These were the settings that I used.
APN: wap.cingular
Username: ![[email address]](http://www.blackberryforums.com/?emailimage=4b0af685a9ec21f46ec475cb3cc13d74)
Password: CINGULAR1
Viola it worked. It is case-sensitive so remember that.

I have an email into VeriChat. Hopefully they can provide more insight here, as it still isn't working for me even with the changing of the APN, etc. from isp.cingular to wap.cingular.

I am having the exact same problem. I had no luck with Cingular customer service. Would you please let me know if you solved the problem. If I can't get this fixed, I am sending this back -- I am still within the 30 day window. I am at my wits end.

There is a duplicate thread at:
http://blackberryforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=2082
Be sure you reboot after entering the TCP settings and verify that they are still there after the reboot.
Also, be sure you have good signal coverage as the timeout is weak on VeriChat.

do you have BES?
if you are like me, you don't have a bes. all i want is for verichat to work.
cingular customer service has not been at all helpful.
let me know what you find.
again, i am an individual user. no bes. no third party mds.
i am about to return this thing, as the prime reason i got it was for real time messaging.
at my wits end.
thanks

No - I am an individual user like you with no BES. So far PDAapps has send me a "Http Demo" test app to put on my 7290 to see if I can reach www.google.com with the test app. I cannot. However, I can reach the web using Cingular's browser. Strange.

DJ and Mar
I tried calling cingular RIM customer service. The first guy I talked to was more than willing to add the wap.cingular access point to my account, and indicated that it would not increase my cost - stating that our unlimited data plans were wap. However, the system was down and he couldnt do it at the time. Of course, I don't think he followed up.
Follow up calls to customer service got the story that it would increase my cost to have that wap.cingular access point added.
Frankly, it seems rather insane. The unilimited media package for the TREO etc is 20 dollars, versus what we are paying, and they want to shaft us out of real time messaging? I have about 15 days left on my 30 day period, and really am thinking about returning it.
Verichat hasn't been that helpful either.
It does seem that myblackberry.com may work. It's a third party MDS that acts like a BES. Rejhohn's posts explains it well.
I've spent lots of time emailing back and forth with myblackberry's customer service. They are very, very, very helpful.
I am willing to use their service. However, I want to keep BWC for email as I am dsl at work, but dialup at home. Per their customer service, it's possible to keep the BWC for email, and to use them to avoid the limitations on what cingular provides.
I would prefer to use verichat. So, if either of you have any success, please let me know.
Thanks, and Happy New Year

Thanks. I'll keep you posted. I'm not sure I'm understanding why there is a problem. Do you have the "Unlimited BB" data plan? I do, so I don't understand why there is an issue.

I have the unlimited data plan too. If your verichate is working, would you let me know the settings? Or if you had to do anything iwth Cingular customer service?
Thanks. Oh -- I've tried all the settings in Rejohn's posting on this topic, but no luck.

We have solved this one for anyone reading this thread. Call up Cingular at 866 490 2666 and ask for wap.cingular to be added as an APN. Read the threads about the username & passwords here (do that) and then take the battery out of the device for a hard reset and then try it again. It should work, as this has worked for a few of us now.

I have a 7290 from Cingular and just got Verichat working.
Originally, I was not able to get Verichat (or xk72 SSH) working w/the settings in this thread. I was also receiving the "could not open tunnel - failed" message.
Using the following alternate TCP APN settings (Options->TCP) and then restarting (by powering off and removing the battery) did the trick:
APN: isp.cingular
Username:
Password: CINGULAR1
I am running OS v3.8

Ryan, I tried your advise and it still does not work. I called Cingular BB support and asked them to add wap.cingular, but they said it is already on my account. I am getting the same 2 error messages as everyone else.
Anyone have any other suggestions????

It is working on mine, and I am using these settings:
APN isp.cingular
Username for APN: ![[email address]](http://www.blackberryforums.com/?emailimage=16592923c233c270fb41b941a0304578)
Password for APM: CINGULAR1
It is case sensitive. I have never been able to make it work with the wap.cingular APN. Others have. You might try asking them to add isp.cingular.
You can also try ![[email address]](http://www.blackberryforums.com/?emailimage=dabef391f8a64f78fdde7e743b6244a7) . I think I have discovered that "DA" in the one that I'm using is "Data Acceleration".

Also, take a look at "Features" on Cingular's web site. Mine look like this:
/WIX EXTENDED INTERNET $0.00
/WIX DATA CONNECT $0.00
WRLSS INTRNT XPRS PAY PER USE $0.00
XM WITH BB AND V UN $44.99

dozment is correct. If those lineitems are missing from your Cingular bill, you need to make sure they are added.
WIX means "Wireless Internet eXpress"
It may go under a different name in different states, such as California, but three lineitems definitely need to be there before ![[email address]](http://www.blackberryforums.com/?emailimage=16592923c233c270fb41b941a0304578) works properly.
Check your Cingular account online to find out if these lineitems already exist.

I tried to get these lines added to my account but no one at Cingular knows how to do it.
Anyone know how so that I can explain to the Cingular rep how? I just spent over an hour on the phone and neither the customer service rep or data tech knew how to add the lines or why I could not SSH out.
I have the $45 / month XM With BB And V UNL plan.
Thanks

If you are in California, it's under a different name.
Basically, you need three line items that corresponds to the following:
- A Non-BlackBerry data plan in addition to your data plan
This gives you access to the wap.cingular "Access Point Name"
This is called "Wireless Internet Express" (WIX) in certain states in USA
- A tethered data plan, for hooking a cellphone to a computer to use as a modem.
This gives you access to the isp.cingular "Access Point Name"
This is the "Data Connect" line item.
- The size of the non-BlackBerry plan
This is the "pay per use' item. However, you can try a $5 non-BlackBerry plan
The trick is in talking correctly to the Cingular representative. You may need to make 3 phone calls before you reach the right people. Sometimes it's not "WIX" in certain parts of USA. But you definitely need non-BlackBerry data plans.
Try asking directly to have "wap.cingular" Access Point Name added to your account, as well as "isp.cingular". However, these items alone are not enough - You also need a plan size (like Pay Per Use, or $5 plan, or Unlimited). Basically you need three lineitems on your Cingular Bill that corresponds roughly to the three above bulletpoints. Once you've hit this magic combination, your Internet will work on your Cingular.
This is in addition to your BlackBerry plan, even if your BlackBerry plan is unlimited.
It's so tricky to talk in the right way to Cingular reps, and harder in certain states than other.

Thanks I will try it again today.
So since I am adding new data plans pay by use, will my Browser usage now be charged for while before it was unlimited since I only had the unlimited BB plan? I assume I will be charged for making SSH connections as well.
I am in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by the way.

Well after another 2 hours on the phone and them being clueless, I had them start adding anything that was free (although the Data person insists I need to buy a data plan for a minimum of $20 for 5 MB or $80 for unlimited).
I am now able to connect to the server and negioate keys via mipdssh, but my authorisation fails so I guess that is on my end.

Got Verichat to work on the 7290 w/o ATTWS/Cingular help! -
02-14-2005, 11:50 PM
OK - I know this may not work for everyone but this is what worked for me-
Instead of using changing the TCP options to wap or isp per the APN info in this thread, just type the word "proxy" on the first line of the TCP settings (under Options --> TCP). It is the field that has "APN:". Leave the other two lines blank.
I have a Verizon 7250 that I finally got Verichat to work on. After all that, trying to get Verichat to work on the ATTWS/Cingular 7290 has been a nightmare. I did not upgrade to 4.0. Just downloaded Verichat and kept getting the infamous "cannot open tunnel - failed" or it was looking for the "iPPP Service Book". Tried the WAP settings, the ISP settings, and rebooted as well as the other tips in this thread. Finally tried proxy (which I saw on CIngular's BB forum).
Try it - hopefully it'll work for you.
Thanks,
pdxchick

cingular is sucking... -
02-16-2005, 01:16 PM
I called them today to add the wix stuff, but they would NOT do it!
The guy just kept saying that they didn't support tcp apps/functionality.
I cannot connect via midpssh. I can't believe I switched from t-mobile to these idiots for nothing.
Did you guys talk to customer service or rim support to add this stuff?
____
NUMBER 2
I called again and the guy was clueless, he said he had no wix plans, no wireless plans that could be added to my account, other than the unlimited one I already had.
I asked if he could:
1. Add an apn to my account - huh?
2. Add an access point name to my account - como se what?
3. Can you add wap.cingular to my account - what?
He had no clue.
Crap, this is frustrating.
My kingdom for ssh!

I'm IN!!!!! -
02-16-2005, 02:37 PM
This actually did it for me...without any other plans, just the blackberry plan. I'm in south carolina.
APN: wap.cingular
Username for APN: ![[email address]](http://www.blackberryforums.com/?emailimage=926ba5063332a843f899526b95997cb8)
Password for APN: CINGULAR1
The other apn information didn't work for me.
I'm even on 3.8 and it works. Well that is a relief.

I can't get it working -
02-22-2005, 02:14 PM
I have tried WAP, ISPDA, and ISP for the usernames. I have called technical support and asked them to add everything to my bill that even sounded data related, even "unlimited media" for $25/mo.. I have booted and rebooted and rebooted my device. And still I can't get the thing to connect to the Internet. I'm going to lose my mind. Any more advice before I give up?

I think someone mentioned this before, but the APN, username and password are all case sensative. Make sure the APN is in all lower-case and the username and password are in all caps.

That's correct. They are case-sensitive. The user/pass should be in all-uppercase for Cingular. The two most successful ones on Cingular are the following:
APN: wap.cingular
Username for APN:
Password for APN: CINGULAR1
-and-
APN: proxy
Username for APN: (blank)
Password for APN: (blank)
It's funny how Cingular is now the most difficult carrier to use TCP/IP on a BlackBerry now. Even CDMA users finally have it easy now with a TCP/IP stack built into the model 7250!

unlimited media -
02-22-2005, 03:45 PM
papalegba,
Your plan does not sound like a cingular plan.
You said unlimited media for $25? That is not a blackberry cingular plan. The national unlimited cingular plan for a blackberry is $44.99.
Who is your carrier? Or exactly what wireless plan do you have?

Proxy works -
03-08-2005, 05:26 PM
I see this is an old post but for what it's worth. We are in California, I have a blackberry 7100g that was getting the same two error messages when starting VERI CHAT (the tunneling error and the service book entry. I tired all the suggested APN settings I could find for Cingular none worked. What did work was setting the APN to "proxy" with no id or password. Started working righ away.

cingular charged me data rates of either $0.03/kb or $0.01/kb for using verichat with the wix pay per use feature. not cool. they refunded the charges but removed the feature as well. will now call bb support to see what to do next.
septuagint: what feature lines do you have on your bill?

called 800-331-0500 (Cingular) went to tech help, talked with James Murphy (tech), he knew what need to be added. I would recommend called that number and I don't think you can ask to be tranferred to him but he was a lot of help. I only say this because this was the first person out of five who knew what i was asking for
Update: asked for access point for tcp and for them to add the line items for data connect and they did it all. Works great now on 7290 with cingular.

Not sure if this will help anyone:
I have a 7290 BES no phone, data only. This was provided to me by my company with ATTWS service.
I originally did the ATTWS APN of 'proxy' with no username or password and this had been working wonderfully.
I returned from London and when I got home to Indiana I noticed that my Network had changed from ATTWS to Cingluar and none of the data connections were working. Only my BES corp. email.
I tried many of the setting recommened for Cingular and I could get none of them to work.
Today I decided to put back in the APN of 'proxy' with no username or password.
What do you know it started working again!!! No explanation that I can provide, just wanted to pass it along.

First of all, anyone having a problem with this needs to stop by PDA Apps website, http://www.pdaapps.com/verichat_bby/support.html -- and take a look at any issues there.
I work for Cingular Wireless PMC, which is the Data Support for the entire company. This feature is NOT supported and the average representative will not have any idea what you're talking about. As soon as RIM integrates IM services into their software, we will support it.
What you need to have is the "wap.cingular" APN activated in our switch, having neither "Force MDS" or "T-Mobile" selected under the network settings. With that being said, most of the error messages after that point are due to our DNS servers not picking up the domain that the application is using "malformed address", which can be fixed by a simple "Turn Wireless Off" and ALT+CAP+DEL reset of the device. If you're getting "Could not find a service book entry for IPPP", either make sure you're setup correctly for MDS access on your BES, or if you're not using a BES, make sure that "Force MDS" is NOT selected in the network settings.
Any other questions? Give us a call at 866-490-2666 if it's specific to Blackberry DATA questions. Thanks and have a great day.

Boy am I glad I'm not on Cingular. I had them for 2 days and returned the 7100g because they were forcing me to get the full BlackBerry plan when all I wanted was unlimited internet. I wasn't going to pay $50/mo and then phone on top of it when they charge regular phones $20/mo for the same thing. Screw that!!!

7290 on Cingular -
03-28-2005, 05:39 PM
I was able to get this to work on my 7290 / Cingular by doing the following:
1. Go to Options -> TCP and set the APN to proxy. No username or password
2. Save the settings (I forgot first time) and pull the battery.
I put the battery back in and it worked fine. I have the Unlimited Data plan through my company.
I hope that helps

I'm a Cingular user in Illinois with a company provided BB 7290. It's at version 3.8 (according to the phone), and I use 4.0 for the desktop software. My company DOES use a BES server, but it isn't providing any type of Internet access. So it shouldn't matter if you are a personal (non-BES) or corporate (BES) BB user - you CAN use TCP/IP either way. I think the key is to specify the connection method correctly the FIRST TIME. Otherwise you get into some type of split pipes issue, which evidently isn't allowed. That may not apply if you don't use a BES server... not really sure.
So some of you may be having an initial setup issue that locks the way the application accesses the internet. Google search "Application Security for Java-based BlackBerry". I am able to use applications like Verichat, MyImages, and Reqwireless software. But I didn't have any success at first. I also tried every posted TCP setting, APN name, password, tried calling Cingular support, etc. Nothing worked. Here's what I went through to get my app's connecting directly to the internet with a TCP connection...
1. Did a clean install of the OS on the BB and the desktop, using latest versions that I could find.
2. In the TCP settings, for APN I have "proxy" (this is the only thing I "changed" on the BB settings), Username is blank, and Password is blank. Rebooted BB with a ALT+CAP+DEL.
3. Install your applications. If you have the option in your application to select WAP or TCP connection, select TCP before attempting to connect to the internet. I tried WAP first, and it locked the application into using that... requiring a fresh install of the BB OS (see google search above).
4. If you have the firewall enabled, you may get a prompt when your app tries to connect to the internet - allow it. That's it!
I also tried doing the customer support thing to get the "WIX" stuff added to my account. Tried three times with same results - AINT HAPPENIN'. Turned out that I did not need it. Same for all the APN and ID and password stuff.
