Smile Beta testers needed for BBScanner (a police/fire scanner app) - 07-03-2009, 12:15 PM

I'm looking for people to beta test an application I'm writing called BBScanner, this app allows you to listen to police and fire scanners from around the United States on your BlackBerry.

If you're interested, you can download the latest version OTA at http://ota.bbscanner.com. Please let me know what you think about it in the BBScanner forums at http://www.bbscanner.com

This version requires that you're using OS 4.5.0 or later.

Thanks!
Gordon

Scanner feeds from other countries will be added to the directory soon, you can see the feeds that are currently online in Canada that will be added to the directory by going to http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?coid=2

At this time you can only install the app over the air.

I must apologize for not getting back to you about your app. I did download it and it works great, but I have not had the time this past weekend and sit down and put it through it's paces to try to find any problems. I will try to do that on my day off this week. Just wanted you to know that I have not forgotten about you.

I downloaded your software, I keep getting "failed to retrieve directory information and a cached copy is not available". Any ideas?

You thought about adding ATC (Air Traffic Controller) feeds from liveatc.net? That would rock some kind of hard!

Another vote for air traffic control. I live under the flight path of San Diego's Lindbergh Field and I'd love to hear what's going on.

I added logging to the app and the ability for it to send me the log to make debugging easier.

Try using the latest version (0.4.2) (available at http://ota.berryscanner.com), after it says it is unable to download the directory it should ask you if you want to send the log to me, answer Yes.

I'm guessing the problem is that the TCP/IP APN settings need to be set, one source for them is at http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.p...PN_settings%3F

Thanks,
Gordon

The last time I checked, LiveATC.net would not allow third-party app developers to include their feeds in their apps. I'll check with the owner of the site to see if that is still the case.

The owner of LiveATC.net still does not wish to make his feeds available to third-party app developers at this time. I did find out that he's working on an app for the BlackBerry though.

Nope, the feed needs to be one that is being sent to RadioReference.com's Icecast server. If you want you can send your feed to RadioReference.com while still providing it the way you are now, go to "Becoming a Live Audio Feed Provider on RadioReference.com" for more information.

When you run the program for the first time, if it reports that it can't download the directory, you may need to set your TCP/IP APN settings. The settings are different for each carrier, you can find them here.

It means that the person that volunteered to provide that feed isn't doing so at the moment.

Most of the scanner feeds are available all the time but some are part-time or may not be too reliable. In the future I plan on displaying in the directory an icon or something to indicate which feeds are up and which aren't so if a county/area has more than one feed available for listening it'll be easy to see which ones are online.

I love that I can get my local area. Any chance we can save our selections so we don't have to reselect them each time.

To add a feed for area you'll need a scanner and you'll need to send the audio from it to RadioReference.com, once the feed is added there it'll show up in BerryScanner's directory automatically.

Nice work, this app is really taking off. Every BB site I've gone on in the past 2 days has an article about it.
