Yas, make sure you check your profile settings. Also, there are pop-up apps that show a pop-up when u get a message. Peek-a-who and a few more

What do you want, a pop up saying "New Text Message From..." or something along those lines?

If so, take a look at peek-a-who or another 3rd party application.

What kind of alert are you looking for?

Check out bellshare and look at their applications, they have a lot of customizable apps.

Apps for Email/SMS/Pin pop-ups, different color LED colors, or Different alerts for specific emails/SMS/phone calls/calendar events.

I use Aerize Alerts... it's a cool little program... does pop-ups for email and text messages (SMS and MMS)... pretty configurable... but it's a paid app. It does what you are looking for it to do.
