Hey, does anyone know when Google Voice is coming out for the public? Is it a good idea to buy an invite via eBay?

I wouldn't buy one. Sign up and they'll send an invite in a couple of weeks. The BB app needs some work but overall its pretty good. Int long dist fees are pretty good

Haha, so is it just me or does this look too good to be true? Does anyone think they are going to start charging for the service? What's the catch, ahah .x]

I doubt they will charge for the service, it is google, once it's free it usually stays that way. I've had an account for a couple of years since it was grandcentral and don't really use it to it's full potential. If you had t-mobile w/ fav5, you could have free calling using the app (if you place a call through googlevoice, it will call your number). The app still has a lot to be desired for voicemail updates.

Has anyone tried the record call (press 4 during the call) feature? How does it work out if so?

Recording calls works OK, but because of some law you can only record incoming calls.

Request an invite and it should arrive in 2-3 weeks.

My wife requested one and got it in 3 days.
Probably not typical results, but just shows Google is definitely rolling this out at a faster pace now.

Yeah, that's fast. They are absolutely providing one to everyone who requests an invite. They are working as quickly as possible.

I have been using Google Voice for a few hours now.

I guess I just don't get what the appeal is.

It does make calls through VoIP right? All calls count toward your minutes?

~ Ability to have a single phone number which rings at multiple points simultaneously.
~ Unified voice mail with text transcription and personalized greetings per contact.
~ Threaded SMS
~ VoIP
~ Integrated mobile application for BlackBerry
~ Innovative design which has a good shot at completely revolutionizing the way we think about mobile communication.
~ Call screening/filtering
~ Call recording
~ Switch calls from one phone to another without disconnecting caller.
~ All of the above for FREE

Those are pretty appealing to me.

I don't know that it's fully functional yet. I believe it's on the roadmap and I'm not entirely sure how they plan on implementing it.

I would like to know this as well. I agree, I am not to stoked about Google Voice, simply because anyone who wants to reach me can call my cell, and I will ALWAYS have it near me.

Free from Google. However your mobile carrier may not allow you to add your GV number to your favs in the future.

I got my invite and set my number. I haven't taken the time to get everything set up on it so I can try it out tho. I eager to see how this works.

Good thing you don't even need a mobile phone to take advantage of Google Voice.
I use it more for my office and home phone.
Having the mobile apps is just an added bonus for me.

Don't get me wrong... GV isn't for everyone. I'm not pushing it on anybody.
It works for me... does neat things... and I don't pay for it.

Currently it will work for any phone. It uses forwarding, so if you do have a mobile, it will still use your minutes. There is no VoIP yet. Also, all SMS is strictly web based (at least for the Blackberry). There is no available application yet.

Penguin is correct, it can forward to up to 6 phones at the same time. No small feat. This is fantastic for the small business owner, or someone who has multiple offices or occasionally works from home.

Currently, I have no use for it because I am attached to my cell at all times, and dont have multiple office phones. That may be my problem though, and not google's.
