Cool WGarage: Reverse Phone Lookup Question? - 01-30-2006, 09:00 AM

Was wondering if any other people have installed WGarage: Reverse Lookup successfully. It's a program that allows you to do a reverse lookup on any phone number to get the registered name and address. The problem I'm having is that the 'Reverse Lookup' option only shows in the email program, not my phone program which according to their video and screenshots located on their website should be there.

Hopefully it's me doing something wrong because the program is really cool, even though wireless numbers don't return the full info.

Can someone tell me if the program works properly for them, OTA link is:

Try searching the forum for Blackberry 411. Its a cool program that allows you to do reverse phone lookups and has always worked for me.

I can't get direct tcp/ip to work so I need WGarage because it allows me to see the results in the browser window.

I've installed Reverse Phone Lookup OTA with no problems. It's a nice little program actually. However, I do think it's a tad expensive but that's just my opinion

Silver,

There is a thread here somewhere regarding TCP settings for the various carriers (but I am not sure where it is), search for that.

As far as the reverse phone in BB 411, on the first screen click the trackwheel, then choose Search Tools. 2nd option down is reverse phone lookup.

I think in 411 you have to add it as a plugin. Simple enough, chech the plugin faq on the 411 site. You can add dictionary, encyclo etc...

Not that I know of. I simply downloaded 411 as directed and followed what I said to do above. Go to 411, click wheel and choose SEARCH TOOLS. This will give options for things like address search/map, reverse phone, web site lookups, and news, sports, weather.

Default Reverse Lookup Review - 01-31-2006, 03:05 PM

I downloaded and installed reverse lookup 3 days ago. My experience with the product has been *fantastic*. I love Berry 411, but unless I can get reverse lookup functionality right there in the phone app, it's useless to me. Reverse Lookup delivers right where you need it.

Customer service over at WGarage is also great. Very responsive. My only qualm is the price, which could be a little better. Overall, if having reverse lookup capabilities is important, then it's worth the $ to get this product. Great tool for any BB user.

So with this program you go into phone app, see a missed call, click on it and you have the option there to do reverse lookup (just like the option to call, save, etc)? That is cool. I guess I just dont mind doing the same thing by highlighting the number, copying it, pasting it in 411 and getting it from there. Not to mention, its free. But everyone has their own preferences.

The issue with the Reverse Lookup option not showing up in the Phone menu is that you need to upgrade to OS 4.0.2

Also we have just dropped the price of WGarage: Reverse Lookup to only $19.95!

Ok. I am actually not using this I was just trying to get a better understanding of how it worked. I am running OS 4.1. Dropped to $19.95? What was the price before? Is this program ONLY for reverse lookup?

The major difference between Berry411 and Reverse Lookup is that it integrates directly into the Phone and Email application. The results also can be displayed in a popup window or the browser for people who don't have access to tcp/ip. You can also add the results directly to your address book.

There's a video you can see on our website: http://www.wgarage.com

You say you get these functions on the menu without adding them to the list?

No, I guess I wasnt too clear, sorry. You can add these to the list. I have added a few. There are two ways to do reverse phone.

1) Follow the instructions I posted above.

2) Edit Plugins, type "rphone," then when you go to the main screen just enter the phone number, click trackwheel, select "rphone," and away you go.

WGarage,
I guess there are a couple of good features in your program. It is convenient to add the address found directly to your contacts. But $19.95? I guess that is a little steep in my opinion. But if you cant get the TCP stuff to work than its a good option. I am not knocking your product at all, dont get me wrong it does look cool. But for what I use reverse phone for 411 works for me, not to mention I can't cost justify buying this just for a couple of conveniences (yeah I am that broke and cheap). But anyways, everyone has their needs and it does look cool, the web demo was nice too.

The more I think about this program the more I wonder how often anyone would have to do a reverse phone look up? I've done my number and the number of a few friends but I can't see the practicallity of purchasing a program specifically for this purpose??? If I get a call from a strange number I answer it and see who it is, if I see the number in my logs I call it and ask who it is and I can't see this program getting you the identity if the caller doesn't want you to know. Then again, how often would that happen anyway?

Cool WGarage's Rev Lookup...after 4.1 - 04-09-2006, 02:27 PM

I have recently upgraded my TMo 7105t to OS 4.1 (using HK CSL). The upgrade seems to have worked well (took way longer than I expected). There are a few quirks I am working through. One is that my WGarage Revers Lookup seems to have disappeared. Any ideas why, WGarage?

For all, I have found WGarage to be indispensable, especially with its integration into the email and phone apps. I get a lot of calls from phone #'s not listed in my contacts (although I have over 1,600 contacts). Often these are outbound #'s from companies I do business with so it gives me a better clue about how (or whether) I want to return the call. Nice utility, perhaps a little pricey, but then... it's only money!

Default Rphone plugin does not return Canadian numbers - 06-07-2006, 01:52 AM

I've tried using rphone with Berry411 but have had no success looking up names to canadian numbers; at least not in the 604 area code. Saw a post on the berry411 support site about this issue Nov/2005 but have not read anything new about it. Anyone have any insight?

Sorry - reverse lookup directories don't include cell phone listings.

You should document the incoming calls, numbers, date & time, and file a report with the police if this is really serious.

I have been keeping records of the calls and have even changed my number. Then whoever it is called my parents house at 4am and told my parents it was an emergency and they need my number.

I told the cops and they offered to call the number and tell them to knock it off.

There is a legal basis for stopping this person if the behavior doesn't stop. First - it's important to make sure the person has been explicitly told to stop bothering you. You should take up the police offer, and have them call and tell the person to stop - and you should make sure a record of the event has been made.

Once the person has been told to stop, repeated events may be classified as "harassment", which is defined as: "A course of conduct directed at a specific person that causes substantial emotional distress in such person and serves no legitimate purpose" or "Words, gestures, and actions which tend to annoy, alarm and abuse (verbally) another person." (source: Black's Law Dictionary).

A discussion from the website "haltabuse.org" describes this well:

Harassment consists of the intentional crossing of your emotional or physical safety boundaries. You must have boundaries set in place clearly in order for that to apply. The legal definition of harassment, according to Black's Law Dictionary, is:

"A course of conduct directed at a specific person that causes substantial emotional distress in such person and serves no legitimate purpose" or "Words, gestures, and actions which tend to annoy, alarm and abuse (verbally) another person."

This is of course a very broad definition, which state and federal legislation and common law have narrowed and refined in various ways. However, for our purposes, WHOA defines online harassment as any actions that meet the qualifications of the above definition after the harasser has been told to cease.

If someone simply disagrees with you, however strongly or unpleasantly, that isn't harassment. Someone who sends you a single email message that isn't overtly threatening probably hasn't harassed you. Spam, while very annoying, isn't harassment. And messages posted to any open venue, such as a newsgroup, a web-based board, an AOL discussion forum or a chat room, are seldom truly harassing unless they're forged to appear to come from you or contain direct threats or libelous statements. The same goes for things said on someone else's web site. Harassment usually involves repeated communications via email or some sort of instant messaging program after the harasser has clearly been told to go away.

Cyberstalking is a specific kind of harassment. The Department of Justice 1999 study on the subject defines it as "the use of the Internet, e-mail, or other electronic communications devices to stalk another person. Stalking generally involves harassing or threatening behavior that an individual engages in repeatedly, such as following a person, appearing at a person's home or place of business, making harassing phone calls, leaving written messages or objects, or vandalizing a person's property." Cyberstalkers frequently follow their targets around the net, frequenting in chat rooms, message boards, newsgroups or mailing lists in which the target participates. At times they will also attempt to form relationships with those who are friendly with the target in order to get more information about the target.

This is potentially an actionable offense. But if you want to protect yourself, you need to make sure that you notify the person to stop (police notice would be best), and then record each and every subsequent event - time, date, etc - all details, and keep a very organized log.

Next step though - follow up with the police - and make sure you keep your parents in the loop on all of this.
