Default [UPDATED Feb 8!] MarkyBerry Utilities - Free Software By Mark Rejhon - 02-02-2006, 07:03 PM

MarkyBerryUtils

Free software recently written by me, for my own use and inspired by BlackBerryForums users. Enjoy!

Important note: To enable hotkeys, turn off "Dial From Home Screen" setting in Phone->Options. (You can press the phone hotkey before dialing, anyway). Hotkeys do not work on 71XX series, so you have to manually launch via icon. However, hotkeys works from PocketDay as an assigned key if you need hotkeys on the 71XX series.

MarkyBerryUtils Wireless Download:

Download Quick Note Via BlackBerry:
www.marky.com/files/bb/QuickNote.jad

PURPOSE: One hotkey access ("Q" key) to immediately jotting down notes that is automatically copied to the clipboard. Requires BlackBerryOS 3.6 or later. Configurable font sizes and optional clipboard display on startup. Written completely from scratch.

Download Quick Compose Via BlackBerry:
www.marky.com/files/bb/QuickCompose.jad
PURPOSE: One hotkey access ("C" key) to immediately composing a blank new email message. Requires BlackBerryOS 4.1 or later. This readds the missing Compose icon from earlier BlackBerryOS software, while using the new convenient New Email interface of OS 4.1. Thanks to Ramble at SRA for the first version of the code.

MarkyBerryUtils Desktop Download:
Attached Files
File Type: zip QuickCompose_v102.zip (2.7 KB, 1718 views)
File Type: zip QuickNote_v11.zip (4.4 KB, 1652 views)

Thanks,
Mark Rejhon

Thanks for the utilities.

Is there a way to utilize BBSpell or BBCorrector within the QuickNotes?

Many thanks to RIM for finally sending me the code signing key that I needed before I could release QuickCompose. They are very tiny programs, less than 10 kilobytes each and about a couple dozen lines of code apiece. The source code to MarkyBerryUtils is in the Development Forum area, for those interested.

Thanks,

Default Mark what does your Quick compose do - 02-04-2006, 08:14 AM

that the SRA version did not.

Also what do you think of my Call from Calendar idea. I just posted that again in the small apps thread?

For some reason I cant get the Q key to work or the Phone to stop dialing even that Dial from Home screen is turned off. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Also, can you assign shortcuts to apps from the home screen?

My version works properly with Alt+Esc multitasking (Although Ramble's version just got fixed, so there is no difference). The other thing is that my version has an icon. Future versions of my software will probably allow configuring between the OS 4.0 Compose method and OS 4.1 Compose method. Also, the API's do not exist for Call From Calendar, although you can embed a clickable phone number into a calendar entry (much like email addresses and web addresses automatically become clickable after you type them). The next best thing: A program that simply created a calendar entry containing a clickable phone number, selected from the addressbook, would be more complicated and would probably be PocketDay's domain -- and I wouldn't have a personal use for the feature (so I would have to sell the software rather than post it for free). It took me less than 1 hour to make Quick Note, so it is something worth providing to the public for free.

Tap the key quick, not hold the key down (holding key down automatically does a Speed Dial). Plus, if you are using the Cingular theme, switch to the Applications folder or switch to a different theme. Once the Quick Compose icon is visible, you should be able to tap the "C" key.

The clipboard is built into the OS. It's where the "Copy and Paste" text is stored. (Aren't you familiar with how to copy and paste text between BlackBerry applications?) Just select "Paste" in any other editable text area in any BlackBerry app. For example, selecting "Paste" in the menu while writing email, will paste the contents of what you typed in Quick Notes.

Thanks,
Mark Rejhon

MrKyoo - Try setting "allow checking any text" within bbspell - this will probably allow you to spell check in Mark's new apps. I'll check it out myself soon.

One user reported QuickCompose sometimes freezes (rare problem, it seems) - that has now been fixed. (Version 1.02). A bugfix I made to Ramble's version had some unintended side effects, but 1.02 fixes all known bugs now. Just download again, either OTA or Desktop.

New version of QuickNote released, Version 1.1, with configurable Options, including the option to clipboard auto-paste on startup, and configurable font size. Source code provided as sample in the Development Forum to show how easy it is to create BlackBerry software like this. This program is only about 100 lines long. Enjoy!

Download Quick Note Via BlackBerry:

Or get the newest Desktop Verison from the top of this thread.

My favourite font is now X-Large (30) in Extra Bold mode. This is because, as a hearing impaired guy, I like to type notes to show to other people, who may not be able to read tiny BlackBerry text as well.

It's also easier to read bigger text while I am typing while walking as the BlackBerry can shake around a bit. I like to keep the font in the rest of the BlackBerry small, so it's good to have the option of a customizable font specific to Quick Note. (For the rest of the BlackBerry, I use size 8 or 10 BBMillibankTall Bold.)

Two purposes for myself:

1. Clipboard editing utility. If I enable Paste on Startup, QuickNote essentially becomes a clipboard editor.

2. As a deaf guy, typing notes to show other people like "Fries and coke" to a fast food cashier, or "123 Main Street at Third Avenue" to a cab driver. Sometimes it's hard to communicate to strangers. They don't always read very well, so the adjustable font size helps, I use a bigger font size for QuickNote than for the rest of the BlackBerry.

Thanks,
Mark Rejhon

OK I get it now. Whatever is in the clipboard is copied to this when you hit Q not when the BB is turned on. That is what confused me.

really cool app. i installed quicknote on my 7100i and set the middle button to open it. its great. something to think about in future versions is an option to autosave it as a memo when you close the program.

Short answer: Not possible.

Long Answer: Programmer Geek Speak follows. To the best of my knowledge, I haven't seen an API that allows me to access MemoPad text. I am looking through RIM JDE 4.1.0 programmer API's. If you know of any, I might be able to add this feature. I checked both javax.microedition.pim.PIM and net.rim.blackberry.api.pim.PIM, but it does not seem to allow this.

Thanks,

patrick...my friend who uses a Verizon 7250 also has the same problem, and there doesn't seem to be a way to fix it. The rest of us, with 7290s, an 8700, and a 7100g, on Cingular, don't have that problem, but when you press "c" on the 7250 you get SMS, not email. He installed OTA.

Mark...possible bug?

Short Simple Answer: I believe it's a possible BlackBerryOS bug. Try upgrading your BlackBerryOS to a newer version.

Long Complex Answer: Caution, computer programmer geek terminology follows. I am just doing a simple RIM 4.1 API call using net.rim.blackberry.api.invoke.Invoke using the following:
Invoke.invokeApplication(Invoke.APP_TYPE_MESSAGES, new MessageArguments(MessageArguments.ARG_NEW));
There appears to be no way to specify whether the new message is a blank SMS or a blank email. Therefore, it appears to be a bug that is specific to BlackBerry model 7250. If any other computer programmer or RIM developer can help clarify this, please let me know.

This affects QuickCompose only, and only on 7250 as reported so far. QuickNote has no problems on model 7250.

Thanks,
Mark Rejhon

Switch themes to ones that does not have a separate Applications folder. If you don't have other themes, enter http://mobile.blackberry.com in BlackBerry Internet Browser, and download some. Then go to Options->Themes.

Mark,

I really like this app. Download on 7250 VZW with 4.0.2 OS. One thing I'd like to see is that the text is saved when you exit the app. To my surprise I wrote something down and then when back in to retrieve and it was gone ;-(

I know the text is copied to the clipboard but I'd like to keep a running list... Can the text be saved and at my leisure I can wipe the slate clean. Maybe in the next version?

Thanks again.
