The BB softwares you hate (or dislike -- let's be politically right)

I think I fell into a few "nice" traps after trying out some suggested softwares. What about putting out a list of all the traps you warriors fell before?

Not just for venting, but to give the newbies' a good lessons-learnt.

"Nice" traps may include: Free but not really, Shareware that prompts Ad all the time, 99% of the time won't work, drain your battery fast, screw up your BB, you name it --- e.g., efile is a thing that forced me to reimage my BB, SPOT is something I never got it right to work, BBToday always have some Java trouble, etc.

NJBlackBerry 03-13-2006 06:13 PM

A little help please. What "nice" traps did you fall into?

coreyg510 03-13-2006 06:13 PM

Well I would suppose that you should be the one to start considering this is your thread.

srl7741 03-13-2006 07:45 PM

I agree

However i will temp...........

1. Shareware (great stuff but temps you to spend for the moment when it runs out)

2. Freeware (great stuff but often leads to the purchase of more expensive stuff)

3. Software updates (make us all dig deep for the changes) and to prove they do what they say they do.

4. New software (we have to learn everything over) and there is never enough time in the day. So i have to stay up for 36 hours straight. :)

5. My first computer (there's the truth) Life was simple b4 that day.

6. New technology (can't live without it) truth is? yes we can we just think we can't? (for us tweak freaks)

7. Virus scan software. (who says they don't employ ppl to release new viruses to keep the industy going?

8. i'm trying hard to find 10 traps

9. Bigger is always better (if it applies) Smaller is alway better (if it applies)

10. Curiosity always completes the trap.
(I always loose common sence after 16 hours of trying to configure something for some moron who knows nothing but pays the bills. Hence the biggest trap (Those Bosses with Stupid ideas)

Just from my experiences IM+ is terrible.

sustrw 03-13-2006 08:17 PM

I use IM+ and find it great. I like the idea of paying once for the software, and then have no monthly charges.

I was using a beta of Transfirm's "RSS Feed Reader", and I set all of my RSS channels to check for new headlines every 24 hours thinking that this would keep my data usage in check. I guess my mistake was putting that much faith in a beta - as it turns out, there seems to be a significant amount of data transfer activity even when the reader is idling and not actively checking for new content, and I had a healthy usage of 79MB for the month of January. Oops.

My lesson-learnt would be to use betas cautiously - some of their functionality may not work as advertised.

No offense but if you learned anything from that it should be to get the unlimited data plan.

eWord.

I just needed a simple word processing program and was even willing to spend the 60 bucks(!) to get it, but two to three minutes into the trial proved to me that I should just wait til I get home to write word docs. I'm sorry, but the program is so slow I thought someone was playing a practical joke on me.

You want to know what (3rd party) software I hate?

Okay, I'll bite...
  • Magmic's version of Klondike (AKA traditional Solitaire), because it FORCES you to play with "Draw 3" rules. I ALWAYS play "Draw 1", which should ALWAYS be an option on EVERY version of Klondike made for a PC or video game system! The only GOOD thing about it is that OS version 4.1 allows you to download it for FREE, and it's still better than Arkan... uh, I mean, Brick Breaker. ;-)
  • Magmic's version of Backgammon... the pieces for the 2 players are so similarly colored, that it's almost impossible to tell your opponent's pieces from your own! Not cool! :x
  • Magmic's version of Mahjong, because I would choose pieces that looked absolutely identical on-screen, both of which were available for play (i.e. not covered by another piece) and it wouldn't recognize them as valid matches! :x
The only good thing about the latter 2 is that I was at least smart enough to d/l the free trial version first. Once it became apparent that they sucked, I deleted the free trials and didn't bother to buy the full versions. :-P

SPOT is the BB SW I dislike most so far -- never got it right

Note my sig line indicates I'm on Rogers in Toronto - the unlimited data plan is capped at 25mb as indicated in about a zillion other posts on here, including the "Rogers Petition" sticky thread in the main discussion forum.

Thanks though, I do appreciate the condescending reply.

It's better than it was, but it's still not a viable client. Still has some translation issues (poor spelling and grammar in various dialog boxes), and it crashes/freezes occasionally. Hopefully they'll get their act together after a few more version updates. They need to cut down on how much transfer it uses (not because of usage, I have unlimited data, but because of battery consumption, it consumes 10-20% of the battery per hour running).

Thanks for taking offense to my clearly nonoffensive statement.

Magmic's Curling game. It's a long game and there is NO SAVE. You can't continue a game later on. WTF?

I contacted them and they said "maybe in a future version" - well, I haven't seen one yet.

I do like their Texas Hold 'Em and a few other games...

I have Pocket Express and TV Guide from Handmark. I bought the Pocket Express first and really like it. I then bought the TV Guide and it does not work as well. The TV Guide has problems accessing the channel information for my local cable company. To make matters worse, it changed the device ID assigned to my 7105t and I could not use Pocket Express. I logged into Pocket Express website to reset id. The TV Guide program wouldn't work than. I sent email to customer support and there only answer was to delete both programs and re-load. That didn't work either.

I would not recommend buying these 2 programs together until Handmark fixes the bugs in the software.

Frankly I was very disappointed with AvantGo...I saw little to be impressed with and certainly wouldn't pay for more 'channels'

roofus 03-15-2006 06:53 PM

srl7741 03-15-2006 08:07 PM
