BBWeather: New (unofficial) Version -
04-26-2006, 05:57 PM
I am not the original author of BBWeather and these changes are not supported by the admins of the blackberrytools website. The source code is available so, at the prompting of Stinsonddog, I made two small changes: 1) Alt-Space works as a shortcut for the "Update Now" menu item and 2) Profiles are now sorted alphabetically by description. These were the only changes made, so if these two features do not interest you, then there is no need to upgrade from an older version. If you can't get the original BBWeather to work on your phone then it is likely that you will also not be able to get this version working.

Great modifications as always Tateu, I know many take this little tidbits for granted but I realize and appreciate your great work on this as well as all the great changes you have made to bbCorrector. (Any slight mods that minimize the use of the trackwheel is a great improvement).
Thank You.

My great thanks for these changes. I can't tell you how much I use Alt-space to refresh the weather.

Would be neat to have the ability to use short cut to page down/up in forecast page instead of using trackwheel to scroll down.

I had thought of that but since the space bar was being used already which is page down or up, didn't know what to think. Also scrolling let you focus on the trend. Good idea. Up to Tateu.

Wow had not thought of that one, that would certainly make it a tremendous improvement. Tateu, can you hear us now, . . . . Kidding, but it would really be nice.

No luck so far. I'm having trouble with nextfocus() and movefocus() and I'm not even sure if those are the right functions to use. I'll keep trying to figure it out, but no guarantees...

Anyway I could push for a method to convert to Celsius?
C = (F - 32) / 9 * 5

Convert what to Celsius? There is already a way to display all temps as Celsius (Options for Each Profile | Units = Metric). If that's not what you are talking about then I don't quite understand...

OK, I've been a 7290 user for only about 5 months now, but I confess I don't get it. What's wrong with using the trackwheel such that its SO important to minimize its use?

Wear and tear on it. The more you use it the more likely to break down it will be and as you stated it is too important for so many things, so the more usage minimization there is, the longer the life and the more available it will be when it is absolutely necessary to use. It is probably (with the exception on broken screens) one of the easier to breakdown parts on the BB, in my opinion.

Hmm, ok - thanks for the answer. I guess I look at it a little different. If the trackwheel makes it easier and quicker to use, which I think for me it does, then I'm going to use the darn thing rather than trying to remember a whole bunch of special key codes instead. If it breaks, then I'll get it fixed. To me, that's kind of like saying I'm going to try to not drive my car because it wears the tires down.
Just my $.02 though, not knocking you for feeling different - and thanks again for the answer.

Surprisingly, its not all that common for the track wheel to break down. If it was I am sure we would hear about it a lot more on the forum... (not that it never happens).

Maybe I'm just stupid, but I'm getting the error: could not find a service book entry for IPPP. What is this issue?

Speed of use. If you do everything with the trackwheel you will be minutes and minutes behind the same tasks during a day. My firm has 14,000 BB users so I see a lot of people with them. Simple thing like get to a calendar entry next week, oh let's compare weekly schedules. Takes forever with the trackwheel, so I grab a shortcut when I can.

Hmm, ok, maybe I haven't gotten into it all deeply enough to notice that yet. Speed of use is a much better reason than babying the trackwheel! Yikes, 14,000 users? That must make your firm the biggest user in the world, maybe behind the US government - unless you ARE the government! Time to print out your hints doc and go through it thoroughly, I guess. (Thanks for the time & effort on that!)

A little enhancement -
05-31-2006, 11:58 AM
Not sure if you think this would be cool or not, but the bb push service uses accuweather, and they support motion graphics, bad thing about it is it goes over the internet every time you want to see the weather. The thing I love about your app is that it caches the weather. I just thought that the animated graphics would be cool

I still don't have this working. The closest I have gotten (and I am currently using this version) is, on the forecast screen, to disable the focus for all fields except for the Date field. So, when you use the scroll wheel, the focus moves directly from "Thursday Jun 1" down to "Friday Jun 2," etc. This is far from perfect because it usually means that the Date field is highlighted at the bottom of the screen for "Friday Jun 2" and the weather data shown above it is for "Thursday Jun 1." It also, obviously means that you can't scroll through or copy from the fields for temperature, precipitation, etc. I haven't yet wanted to copy data from any of those fields, though, so I prefer it this way.

This version works just as fast at the other version for me, but I can't seem to get the Alt-Space to work for an update (I have the 7100i). Is this feature specific to full qwerty models? The locations are in alpha order, which is good.
I did stumble across pressing space to toggle between current conditions and forecast, so that's nice.

That appears to be the case. I just tried it in the simulator on a 7100g and it does not work. I am going out of town for about 3 weeks so I may not have time to fix it until near the end of June but I'll post an update here when I get around to it...

Hello ... I am not the author of BBWeather but I am the admin for the SourceForge project. I will be happy to put the new version on the project page.
I do not remember you ever requesting that we do post your changes?

I have found an interesting feature of this version of the software (I'm using the 7100i).
I have several cities set up and noticed that if I press the power button on top of the device (usually to increase the backlight), the location in BBWeather changes to whatever location is first in my list.
Interesting.....
