Arrow How much would you pay for a good time/expense tracking app for the BB? - 07-11-2006, 08:47 AM

This is a companion post to the other thread about the Time-tracking app.
http://www.blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?t=3716

so in order to hopefully generate some interest in this from either a company or individual willing to write this software, I am posting a poll to see how many would be willing to pay for such a thing. From what I understand, there might have to be a server-side component involved, unless the reports or data could be emailed somehow. I am not sure. So that's why there are choices for one-time fee as well as recurring monthly charges, in case the service would require some sort of hosting.

Hopefully enough people will show their support so we can finally get something made to fill this void!

Am I supposed to want a time/expense tracking app for personal use? I would think this is the type of thing that would be purchased and rolled out on a company-wide basis. In that case, a small - medium company should probably spend $2000ish.

The point is there are a lot of independent contractors out there or companies with 1-5 employees that bill time hourly, this is for those people.

I don't have an immediate need for this type of software, but I can see where it would be extremely useful for some folks.

I use TrackIT: Expense for expenses, but I would REALLY like a good time tracking app.

Below are the specs I sent Southwestcomm for this app:

I would like a time tracking app to do the following:

1. Single screen for quick entry
2. Date with auto-fill and the ability to change
3. Start time (possible auto-fill with override)
4. End time (possible auto-fill with override)
5. Total Time (Will be calculated and auto-filled, but with override)
6. Client
7. Project
8. Hourly Rate
9. Brief Notes/Description
10. Expense field (Numeric)
11. To be able to add clients, projects and rates into a list of drop-down options for quick adding in later entries.
12. The ability to override the Total Time in case I didn't keep track of start/stop, but knew I spent 1.5 hours on a project.
13. Exported data in some format that Excel can import.
14. Other features you may think are useful that I am not thinking of.

Bonus: To be able to generate an Excel-compatible report to show total time for a project, or client or by date range with calculation of totals for time spent and hourly rate.

I would pay $25 to $30 for this. I use TrackIT Expense and Vehicle editions for expenses and mileage and I paid $25 for each of those. I am a Technology consultant and I track everything I can.

cwemely your list is excellent, and describes what we need perfectly.. I only wish someone would code such a thing!!! if I could write java I would do it myself and probably make a few bucks doing it too.......

luckman212,

Thanks! I agree with you that there is money on the table for the develop who creates this app. Perhaps Mark at CRS will take this on in his "spare" time. I read his post on using PDLists, but I don't think the feature set is completely there for this particular project.

I hope developers are tracking this thread. My Visa card is ready.
