Default Google Local 1.3 - W/Traffic Updates - 07-25-2006, 08:21 AM

I just installed the new version of Google local at Google Maps.

The two new features are (1) that it allows you to save favorite locations; and (2) it shows traffic problems for 30 major metro areas. (Right now, in Boston, it's showing traffic on I-93. Pretty cool.)

NOTE: I unstalled the older version of google local first. As a result, I lost internet connectivity and googletalk. I tried everything (hard reset, reregister on the network, sync on the computer, etc.) and finally I had to call Cingular to get a service book resent. Maybe someone should try installing thew version over the old to see how it works. (READ THE WHOLE THREAD FIRST, SOME PEOPLE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS TRYING THIS)

Playing with the traffic feature a little more:

It shows green if traffic is moving at more than 50 mph, yellow for 25-50 mph, and red for less than 25 mph. Gray indicates that no info is available.

Assuming the info is up to date, this looks like it could a be a fantastic tool.

Allowing the saving of favorite locations is a good feature as well.

I heeded your advice and downloaded it without uninstallation. BB (os 4.1) asked "you have 1.2.1 installed, do you want to replace it with 1.3.0" i said yes of course.

It didn't replace it -- both apps still on device. I couldn't 'find' the app in options -> advanced -> applications, so did javaloader -usb dir , and erase to erase the old module.

No traffic for Toronto.. too bad.. maybe another day =)

Sweet, I love new features!

Not sure what to think about the new version not uninstalling the old version, though. That's kind of hokey.

Could you explain this?

I seem to have both versions on my device now but no way to remove the old one.

EDIT - I just deleted the module off the device and the old one's gone.

what an AWESOME new feature. Last week I spent 5 days traveling...flights mostly but some 2-3 hour drives. Pulled up my older version and found restaurants easily, hotels efficiently and driving directions at the snap of a hat....even a client that was using a vanity address.

This new traffic feature kills the need for my traffic.com rss feed....love it!

Hold up....I just found that you can store 'Favorites'! Did the previous version have this? According to Help, you can set Favorites by pressing **, navigating to the spot, and then clicking the wheel.

Very Cool!

Has anyone been able to find any info regarding the google traffic information? Where does it come from? How up-to-date is it?

I haven't been able to find anything at all on the interweb.

For a clean upgrade, unistall the old one first and then install 1.3.

This is a new feature and should be welcome. Means people should be doing backups.

I loaded version 1.2.3 of Google maps before activating my company Enterprise mode (which does not allow me to download new programs once the policy is in place).

What options do I have for downloading the new version? It seems to me that I would only have permission to download the newer version since I had permissions on the BB prior to activating Enterprise. I'd like to install from scratch, but don't want to lose the older version when upgrading to the newer version.

If your company IT Policy doesn't allow 3rd party apps, then you pretty much can't do anything (so don't uninstall the version you have!). How friendly are you with the BES Admin?

My company has the same policy, where I can't install apps via Desktop manager. However, I've had no problems installing apps OTA, such as this one! Maybe you'll have the same luck.

Finally! I d/l'd it earlier today to check out the traffic tracker. I'm more impressed with the favorites addition.

I'd like to see more BB integration like Berry411, only more

Anyone notice that a returned search no longer returns a phone number, simply provides the "call" link?

Only way to get the number is to hit the "call" link, then cancel the call. Kind of odd to remove this I thought.

*edit*

ok.. for the life of me i can't get it to work..

i couldn't uninstall the old version of google maps through the desktop manager because google maps doesn't show up.. so i decided to delete it through options>advanced options>applications>google maps>*delete*

pointed my browser to the specified link /gmm. It installs successfully. but when i try and run it, i get the error message,

*error starting gmaps$2d130$2dm1_L1: Module 'gmaps$2d130$2dm1_L1' has verification error 2831 at offset 4c4c*

this is after trying it three times and downloading ota three times.. i did a few resets, even deleted googletalk and still nothing. everything else works ie: operamini, bbweather, etc..

i even did the whole cmd /k -usb -f deal but still nothing..

any suggestions?

please pin me if anything 20418ac7

***nevermind, i used operamini to access google.com/gmm and it messed everything up.. i used the bb browser and it worked fine..

Default Does Traffic continue to use Data?? - 07-26-2006, 10:47 AM

If I find a location and show the traffic....and leave that traffic ON while I navigate to something else, does it continue to 'poll' the traffic conditions until I turn if off - thereby continuing to use data?

The new traffic info feature saved me at least 15 mins going back from the office to my house today! I knew exactly where to get off the freeway to avoid congestion. How utterly, overly, incredibly cool!

Couple this app with location services on the BB and it would beat stand alone GPS units hands down.

Thumbs down Fix for Google Maps 1.3 install over older version - 07-27-2006, 06:45 AM

Hey,

Downloaded Google Maps 1.3 for the BlackBerry 8700 without deleting the older version (1.2.3?), but it wasn't working.

Finally found the fix. Go to Settings --> Options --> Advanced Options --> Applications. Now [b]Click[b] the wheel and select Modules. I found both gmaps8700+v4_0_1.1 - 1.2.3 and gmaps8700+v4_0_1.1 - 1.3.0 in spite of deleting the app and full reboot.

I deleted the 1.2.3 module and rebooted again, and now it's working fine.

I still have the same problem. I have deleted both versions and downloaded 1.3.0 several times but still have problems with panning and searching. Its like the server is bogged down. If I leave it for a few minutes and come back the map will usually be there. Its just real slow. Anyone else having this trouble? I have a 7100t.

John,

Been using it all morning, it does seem alittle slower but everything is working fine on my end. Verizon 7130e, atlanta area. Good luck.

I am also having the same problem. verizon 7250. it is VERY slow... i hope it's only a server issue, that will be fixed soon. i like 1.3.0, but not if it is going to be this slow.

Kinda a side issue to help anyone that might have done the same thing i did, if you try to download gmaps OTA using the opera browser the blackberry wont be detected properly, and you will end up getting the version for a regular phone. the app still works but has lots of problems, the blackberry browser allows proper detection of the blackberry, thats the first time ive used another browser than opera mini since i installed it.
