Default WAPPED by Cingular

Yesterday inexplicably all the applications on my 8700c that required WAP connections (Opera Mini, BBToday, BBWeather, Ramble) were non-functional.

The problem was isolated to Cingular when I learned that a family member with another 8700c on the same Cingular account was also experiencing the same symptoms. After 3 lengthy Technical Support sessions with Cingular (2 on the phone including one escalated to RIM, and one online chat) we exhausted a tiresome list of "fixes" without results.

We checked APN settings, each application's setup, several reboots, deleted and added all service books, re-registered the host routing table, etc. nothing worked. As a last resort I even completely wiped the data and OS -- zippo. Frustrated, we hung it up for the day.

Shortly after midnite EDT as mysteriously as the things ceased working, they began to function normally on both BB's.

The point of this post is to alert members that despite our best efforts, often times the solutions are out of our control. If you experience similar issues, you may wish to give things a day or two before running the entire troubleshooting gauntlet. If nothing else, perhaps you may be saved a day of utter frustration.

I have found in the past with Cingular and any other service provider be it phone or cable etc, that if you have a unit that was working yesterday, or service that was working yesterday and all of a sudden stops working, 99% of the time there is an outage by the provider.

I always call tech support, no matter what company, to help me knowing full well there is an outage on their side. Almost always, they tell me there are no known issues on their end and then have me change settings, reboot, etc., etc.. I have had carriers send me new phones because they were sure it was my phone, I have had the cable company set up appointments for a service all because tech support wasn't aware of any system wide issues.

In all those cases, service comes back as mysteriously as it disappeared. You would think that tech support would be fully aware of any service outages or disruptions but they are not. They waste a ton of time trying to fix things that aren't broken.

If you knew of two phones that stopped working, you can bet its on their side. A simple call should have verified there was a system problem but instead they wasted everyone's time trying to fix a nonexistant problem.

Its an industry wide problem.

I had the issue with having connection one day and not the next. I tried something and it worked fine. Turn off your phone and remove the battery for a few seconds and replace. I guess the WAP login gets stuck or something and needs to be reset through hard power off.
