Default MetroViewer - Subway maps [freeware] !!!NY map available now for download!!!! - 08-14-2006, 12:44 PM

[v1.1 - scroll wheel is now supported!]

Hello!!

I created an application that will able the blackberry to show an navigate in subway maps.

By now, it's just the Madrid metro map, but i plan to add more...
Another limitation is that it is running on 7100 machines, but I plan to modify it to be generic.
I'm preparing the NY metro map!!

Please goto:
blackberrysoftware googlepages com
(Sorry not putting the dots, but is my first post and I connot add urls!)

I hope you enjoy this tool! please give your feedback.

You might want to try the website for the transit authority MBTA - Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority

FWIW, someone was putting subway maps on ipods and last I heard various cities made him stop. I think he was chopping the published maps to fit on an ipod and they said the material was copyrighted.

I'm looking forward to having the NYC map on my blackberry.

Please consider extending the application to the 8700. I travel regularly and having the maps would be great. I would like NYC and DC.

Thanks!

Default NYC map - 08-17-2006, 03:54 AM

Hi all,

I already read a lot info about the ipod copyrights problems and I don't want to fall on the same situation…
For my understanding just NY and Washington created problems.
I will use the "New York City Subway Route Map by SPUI", which is public domain and could be used.
So, for NY we already have a solution…

How about GPS support to help someone find the nearest train station to them by using a gps fix.

Default GPS support - 08-19-2006, 05:19 AM

The idea is good but at this moment I have no intention to move on that direction.
And I have some reasons for that:
- normaly the metro maps are not geographicaly corrects to better reading
- The software I created is not a GIS software, is more a image viewer!

But, I could have an alternative! I will start testing the collect of the GSM Base Station ID, which is the antena ID comunicating with our phones.
And with this info, I could show where you are (an area) and show the closest metro station.

Best regards,
Crucialsoft

I really hate to be negative, but I just downloaded and installed the NYC map onto my 8700c.

The opening picture is of a 71xx keyboard. Not so terrible, but would it be so difficult to use an 87xx keyboard?

Why don't you use the scroll wheel? Take a look at how Google Maps handles it (Google Maps). Scroll Wheel scrolls vertically, SHIFT Scroll Wheel scrolls horizontally.

The map is a LOT smaller than the screen, and incredibly difficult to read.

There's no Zoom function which MIGHT at least alleviate the size problem.

I don't get the "Application" part of this. It's a picture file with "bookmarks" to get you to specific parts of the picture. No search / routing capabilities, and not even every station listed.

For now, I'm better off with my subway map picture files (GIF's from the MTA and www.nycsubway.org) and the built in picture viewer!

Sorry CrucialSoft - I had high hopes, but even for free this app gets cuts from my BlackBerry.

not bad..takes some getting used to since this is not the actual mta nyc subway map, so the colors are off, but it serves the purpose.

thanks!

Default trackwheel and the 8700c - 08-19-2006, 11:39 AM

Hi JerryD,

Thank you for the notes.
The Trackwheel usage is really a must! I will create a new version that will use the trackwheel in the way you sugest.

Yes, I know that in 8700, the map is not completly full screen, but I plan to change the application to maximize the screen, give me some time...

About the station list? Put all stations is a lot of work, but I can add more...
About the pictureviewer, it's your choice to use a picture without "bookmarks"!!

Anyway, thank you for trying with a real blackberry, I just ran it on simulator for the 8700, and now I'm sure it runs on real world...

regards,
CrucialSoft

Red face not working on the 7250 (72xx series) - 08-24-2006, 08:22 PM

First things first - Crucial, thank you for finally making something this! I've been waiting for NYC subway maps on my bb forever. You're the man!

Now for my results:

I tried installing the NYC version on my 7250 (verizon) with no luck. Once I load the application, it shows a picture of the 71xx navigational screenshot (suretype keyboard, mine's a qwerty). I then tried selecting a subway station via the thumbwheel with no success.

Basically, when all is said and done, metroviewer is not *at all* functional on the 7250. If you could make this function on the 72xx series, that would be amazing.

One additional recommendation - if you could make this over-the-air installable - that would be so helpful. I had to download a 112MB desktop manager on my laptop, hookup via USB, and restart my lappy, only to find out it wouldn't work. Navigating to a website for a quick download would be ideal! I would definitely point all my friends to this great piece of software (on an 87xx or 71xx)

...looking forward to this working on my 7250.

Default London Map version 2 - 03-17-2007, 02:39 PM

Hello there, can we have a version 2 for London map please?
Also, can you improve the programs icon as it is not a nice one. The original idea was good one but the white background doesn't suit any themes at all.

I'd love to see a version of the London maps that supports the Pearl trackball. This is definitely an app I'd gladly pay for, since I'll be traveling to London quite frequently between now and July. Those fold up Underground maps are a pain in the neck to carry around ;)
