Unhappy Google Maps not working on 8700g T-Mobile - 08-17-2006, 07:30 PM

I've posted this on Howard Forums, but was told to try here too. I've installed Google Maps on my BlackBerry 8700g bought off eBay. Everything works fine, I can surf and download applications, but Google Maps continues to generate this error: "Network Unavailable" --"This program requires a data connection, and some BlackBerry devices require reconfiguration to work properly."

Here's what I've tried so far:
1. change APN to wap.voicestream.com
2. change APN to internet2.voicestream.com
3. add phone number and T-Mobile site password to user name and password
4. add "guest" and "guest" to these fields
5. delete and reinstall Google Maps

Google provides a tip to make it work when you get a "Network Configuration" error, but since this is not the same, I've not tried to delete the entry "IPPP for 5 Click (IPPP)" or "E-mail set up [IPPP]".

Let me know if anyone has a tip!

After you did #1. did you reboot by removing the battery for about 30 sec?

Can anyone tell me what's in their TCP screen looks like? This is what it showed when I got the unit (now it has wap.voicestream.com in APN):

APN: (blank)
Username for APN: (blank)
Password for APN: (blank)

Yes, I saw that already, so I'm set per these settings. Must be something in the system that's causing the memory leak.

Google Map go thru like regular browsing.. Do you have a blackberry data plan? If you can browse the web with the "Internet Browser", you should be able to use Google Map..

Are you on BES?

Did you block it with the firewall? Try resetting it or make sure google is not blocked.

No, I'm using it POP3 fashion, just sending duplicate e-mail to device.

I just requested a new service book. Hopefully that will help.

@oldbb7750: i'm not using a brew web browser. Everything works: T-Zones, Internet surfing, BB411, etc. Google Maps is the only app that fails to work.

OK, new service books did not work. I guess I better give up, unless someone has a brilliant idea. :^(

Yippee! Google tech support came through! It was just a matter of giving the app the correct permissions!

So, here's the actual procedure for an 8700g:

1. Advanced Options/Applications
2. Google Maps/Edit Permissions
3. Connections/Phone change to "Allow"
4. Connections/Carrier Internet change to "Allow"
