Default New beta-testing - DeskFinder: Wireless Search on Desktop PC - 09-28-2006, 05:53 AM

SHAPE Services welcome beta testers with BlackBerry and Pocket PC devices to try DeskFinder beta.

DeskFinder Mobile Application brings all the power of famous Google Desktop to Windows Mobile Pocket PC and RIM BlackBerry devices.

DeskFinder allows users to search and download text from emails, chats, Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, PDF files, Web history and many other files being miles away from their home or office PC.

DeskFinder is a good application for an easy scan of the information on the user’s home of office PC that can be viewed remotely on the mobile device. Search results are remarkably arranged in the order relevant to the date, keywords and predefined search criteria.

Technical requirements:
DeskFinder works only in complex with Google Desktop Search application. So Google
Desktop should necessary be installed on your computer.
Your mobile device should support TCP/IP connection.

If you are interested in beta-testing, please send us a request to support(a)shapeservices.com and specify your device model.

Three most active beta testers will get their free copies after DeskFinder's commercial launch.

okay, I'm a software guy, at a software business.
I've long since liked federate queries, especially desktop tools like google desktop. I try to stay organized, but I process a lot of docs, ppts, emails, etc...it's endless.

I got the link to download this app (no, I don't know the company, work for the company, etc...). It took me 3 secs to download and unzip. Another 2 mins to run the .exe for the google desktop plug in. Took another 2 mins to road app loader from desktop manager and give the right Http/socket connects from my 8700c.

2 mins later, I was running DeskFinder from my blackberry, locating emails, docs, etc on my desktop. HOW FREAKING COOL IS THIS!!!!

DeskFinder...Job WELL done. I'll report back as my usage increases, but I can already see the envy of my coworkers and the teams that work for me, when I can find the right piece of information from my ..er...uh....dumbphone.

Thanks. I got the program up and running.

I do have some suggestions, making this program's navigation to function like many other BB apps:

1) Incorporate the button with the program. I would like to be able to enter a search string at the main window, and then hit enter and have it search (using the "Search Desktop" option, that is only accessible when clicking the trackwheel).

2) In the search results window, allow to follow a link (using the "View" option, that is only accessible when clicking the trackwheel).

3) In the search results window, hitting the button moves one line down in the window, just as does scrolling the trackwheel. I would like to see the button have the functionality to move down a screen at a time. Likewise the combination of and would move back up a screen.
I would like to commend you for already having the spacebar functions working as explained above, for the search item detail window.

4) Allow the use of keyboard shortcuts to move to the top of the results or search item detail window (T) and to the bottom (B) of the results or search item detail window.

Better identification as to wether the service is running on the PC or not would be nice too...the indiator is small, and though it says CONNECTED most of the time, I find that it really isn't.

Another item I noticed:

When you are in the Settings screen, and hit the escape button, it pops up a dialog asking of you want to Save Settings, with the following options: Yes, No, Cancel. Selecting Yes does save the settings, but only makes the pop up dialog disappear. It does not take you back to the main Search screen, which is usually what is intended by hitting the escape button. Selecting No actually takes you back to the main Search screen. Cancel makes the pop up dialog disappear.

A feature I would like to see, is to be able to use this app with multiple desktops ( e.g. my home computer and my work computer), without retyping in the service identifier each time.

Hi. SHAPE,

Other days I installed the application onto my 8100 device. After continuous attempts to connect the program to service I failed. I?ve addressed to developers and they have sent me the new light version of application. I?ve connected with the current version successfully. But the one thing bothers me. If I understood correctly, SSL support has been disabled in the version compiled for me. So how the transferred information will be secured now?
2. Sometimes I can?t connect with the first try. Should I change something in settings?
3. Can I transfer and listen to MP3 on my 8100?
4. Are there limitations for transmissible information volume?
5. Which differences are there between beta and released versions? Will there be any functions added? Will I be able to send a discovered picture to my friend, for example?

Thanks

Default Developers' reply - 10-09-2006, 09:53 AM

dahov, see our developers' replies to your questions below.

1. Anyway the transferring information is encrypted with encryption
algorithms and is never transmitted without encryption. In new version the
encryption with SSL is still supported.
2. These are temporary disadvantages which will be fixed in
release version.
3. This functionality is not available currently but it is planned for
next releases.
4. All files are uploaded in pages having the size of 4Kb. There are no
limitations on file size. Mail files are uploaded fully.
5. In first release only text files can be reviewed. The processing of
other files types will be added in next versions. There will be no need to
add the desktop identifier manually- it will be uploaded automatically using
the synchronization mechanism.
The automatic network settings feature is added. The stability of mail
processing and sending is significantly improved.

Exclamation Important Note - 10-16-2006, 11:22 AM

NOTE:
Version 0.93 needs some additional adjustment, which is not described in manual yet.
After installing new version as described in user's manual, you need
to connect your device to your PC, open DeskFinder on your desktop and
press button "Generate new DeskFinder service ID".
This service ID will be recorded on your Blackberry.
Then DeskFinder will ask you to restart application. Please restart.
After starting DeskFinder on your Blackberry, autoconfigurator will
start.
Please send us autoconfigurator log, it is very important for further development.
