Default Looking for free basic World Clock (Pearl) - 12-26-2006, 01:24 PM

Can anyone point me towards a basic, working World Clock/Time applet? I regularly communicate with people in Hong Kong (and right now Paris and Rome), and I want to quickly glance at a screen (sic) that shows me what time it is in several places. A simple digital output with a cities list, nothing fancy -- quicker and lighter is better than fancy graphics and overloaded functionality I won't use.

I'm coming from the S60 platform, where not only does the OS have this ability in it's native Clock app, you also can get a free WorldMate download that has a 5-way clock. I'm absolutely astounded the BB OS doesn't have this built-in. and don't want to shell out yet more money for missing capabilities on this device (already paying $30 for a missing SyncML plugin, sheesh).

I've tried the only one I can find and others link to here:
www freej2me co uk / WorldClockPage.html

...but it doesn't seem to work right at all on the Pearl, I can't change the theme to Digital and adding other cities doesn't "stick", I can only ever see my own. If I'm doing something wrong and it works on the Pearl for you, say something.

thx!

Work very well on my 8700c. I can see 4 cities at a time and change the styles to all those available including digital

I also have the 8700. Which version did you select? The small or big version?

The small version. And yes another thing that may address rivviepop's problem. Rivvie whenever you tried to add a city did you simply click on "Apply" or did you first select "Change Option" and the clicked on "apply". If you click only on "appy" your choices don't stick. You have to do both

Default Question - 01-04-2007, 11:06 AM

When downloading, I got the message that the file did not contain a signature and may not be from a trusted source. I'm assuming it means the program might be some type of malware. What does it really mean and does it matter? Anyone know the software developer?

Alas that's where the problem lies -- here on the Pearl, when you open the Settings screen, any attemps (i.e. Change Option) to modify a single radio button group fail; a scroll down jumps directly from the first option in the list to the first option in the *next* list.

I can understand why it doesn't work -- the Pearl's keyscan codes are probably different that other handsets (to handle the trackball of course), and this midlet doesn't recognize the 'keystrokes' to go down one item in the list. It works in other places in this same midlet (like when you first set it up and choose your home city), which makes it even that much more obscure.

No response yet from an email to the developer. :(

It just means the applet hasn't been signed with an SSL certificate, which is very common with free/open source programs (not just Blackberry midlets, but Symbian programs as well amongst others). Signing your application can cost a bit of money and isn't worth it to someone releasing free programs.

You'll be fine, this particular one isn't malware. Honestly the whole "signed applet" thing is overrated on any platform, it thinks it's adding security but in the end just confuses the users. Great in theory and on someone's white paper, terrible in the real world and with end-users.

There should just be an icon right there, are you sure it installed correctly and you looked at all the icons, even towards the bottom of the list? (depending what theme you're running) I've installed it several times (after OS upgrades, etc.) and it just... works.

LOL... Yeah, it looks like I haven't looked that well through the icons... I found it!! Yay! Thanks!! The problem was that I'm using the iPhone theme and the World Clock icon is exactly the same of the gcalsync... That's why I couldn't find it... Now I have a second problem, just like you, I can't change the radio buttons on the settings... But I'm happy the clock is working though! LOL

Yeah, turns out it's a bug in the 4.2.0.XX BlackBerry 8100 OS versions, you have to upgrade to the 4.2.1.XX series to get that magic radio-button fix for generic Java apps on the Pearl. Personally though I'm sticking with the 4.2.0.73, I'm not 100% happy with 4.2.1.96 (latest as of now) to upgrade just yet. *shrug*

Is everyone's clock time set right? I am in LA and it shows one hour behind and I can't change it. Might be something to do with the new Daylight Savings Time???
