Default Icon Creation Question - 04-19-2007, 07:52 PM

THIS APP IS GREAT ! ! !

My Question is How do you Create an Icon? I understand that they are created using "Png" Can I downsize a picture on a website like "PhotoBucket" then save the file as a "png" file - Is that a picture format (like jpeg) ? Should
I use Microsoft Word to create the text or should I copy, paste and clean up
off of the website I wish to use as a shortcut?

Thanks for All of the Help!

Also what do you change the resolution to?

Png files are image files similar to gifs, but they're able to carry more color information. You'll need image editing software. You won't be able to use Microsoft Word. It looks like the images I've seen so far for this app have been in the neighborhood of 40x40 (pixels).

Can't get the icons to show up...

I used the ebay link and I click update, it connects and downloads the icon, but the icon doesn't show up.

Any ideas?

The icon will show up the first time you click on it. It will do the same thing after each subsequent reboot.

Jonathan,

Tryin it on the 8703e and am having trouble getting images to load.

The short cut is fine but no image, regardless of the site I host it on.
Like the idea of having web shortcuts though.

You know what would be nice....if the shortcuts stayed after an OS upgrade. They have to be completely reloaded after an upgrade. The app and blank shortcuts obviously get backed up and restored but the data does not. (It's the same with other apps like BBWeather, though)

We just ran a review of the shortcut manager at this link

It has detailed instructions on how to setup the shortcuts.

Once again thank you Jonathan...

Jonathon,
I tried downloading Shortcut 5 OTA the other day and got some kind of a midlet error. All the others downloaded fine.

hello everyone - been an upsurge in interest in this again, must be a lot of new bberry owners which can only be good for us obsessives.

i find myself with nothing to do on the weekend as it's the end of the month and payday is on monday and beer costs more than when i was younger so i'm gonna spend the time rethinking this solution.

give me 24 hours or so and i'll hopefully have a much better app ready, i'll be programming on a little laptop with 512mb of ram though... but i promise a much more elegant clean application with a proper 'blackberry' ui.

- oh and you'll be able to change the icons and the name of the shortcuts no problem.

ta!

here you go, try this: http://m.jonathanhfisher.co.uk/webshortcuts/ - visit from your blackberry.

links, icons and titles for your shortcuts, all customized from a standard blackberry user interface utility. tested on a curve, should be fine on any newer device but not tested. If you do find a bug (likely) please comment on this thread: BlackBerry Web Shortcuts 2.1.0

thanks,
jon

Very nice!

No bugs so far. All downloaded and installed fine on my Pearl. I deleted the old prior to installing the new and it still had the data for the old shortcuts preloaded.

Ok, spoke too soon. I loaded it on an 8700g with 4.1 OS. I downloaded the shortcut hub and it reboot during the install. It came back up. I went to download the shortcut 1 and did the same thing. Now it's in a continuous reboot loop. Hourglass for about 5 seconds then reboot, and over and over. I'll post in your other thread linked above after I get down wiping and restoring.

weird - that shouldn't be possible (to install on a 4.1 device) - the blackberry should block that at the os level. i'll add a warning to only install on 4.2 devices while i look into it.

Ok, so 4.2 only. Yeah, after it happened it dawned on me what the problem most likely was. Good practice using loader.exe from a command prompt!

Edit: Upgraded said 8700g to 4.2 OS and it all works fine now.

jfisher-

I actually saw the new update at your website and installed OTA on an 8703e (obviously running 4.1). The utility and web shortcut 1 installed fine over-the-air. When I ran the main application, it provided an error. While I was writing down the error, it rebooted. It would reboot everytime I ran it so I removed it. Just letting you know. I also posted at your website per your instructions above.

I try to enter a URL like this :

https://webmail.xxx.com

but I keep getting an error message "please enter a valid URL for Shortcut 2"

any idea?

I have encountered another problem.

After I assigned Shortcut1 to point to a website. When I click on it, it doesnt do anything, no browser showing up or anything. I see the up and down signal indicating exchanging data but nothing shows up. But after I clicked on Shortcut2 (non-assigne shortcut) and re-click Shortcut1 again, the web browser will shows up.

You're lucky! I tried installing it on a 4.1 device and had to wipe the device to bring it back.

Good app, though. Always has been. Customizable labels to go along with the icons now. Awesome!

right - seems the main errors are happening when people somehow manage to get the app installed on a 4.1 device - i'm sure the os shouldnt allow it to even be installed but it's somehow letting it get onto a couple of devices, i'll add some code that detects pre4.2 os and notifies the user before exiting gracefully.

thanks for the feedback everyone.

jonathan,
I read your 4.2 warning on your webpage. Your warning sounds like you can install this OTA on 4.1 devices but not via javaloader. I had the problem with the 4.1 device while installing OTA. Is there still an OTA version for 4.1 devices (i.e. the previous version?)

[edit - just had a word with my boss, apparantly ota install will still be allowed on older devices, it's only desktop installs using desktop manager that'd catch the os version so i definitely need to add the steps below to make sure older devices dont screw up]

i've reworded the warning a little and am adding a catch to the application for 2.1.1 so it'll exit gracefully.

once all the bugs are fixed i'll release a version for 4.1 devices that omits the renaming of shortcuts.

Thank you for the hard work. It's nicely put together. Love the larger font and easy UI. Any chance of adding the http:// to the web fields with the option of backspacing it out if necessary?
