How do you find these .png format. Is there a program which takes the normal url and converts it to the format for thsi program?

I unistalled the program because of the .png issue.

I just use microsoft paint to change them from .jpg to .png. Size them to 32x32. I'm sure there are better ways out there as well.

It shows the link is only good for 24 hours, once you make the conversion. What do we do with it after that point?

I am assuming I have to take the PNG Icon and place in a hosting site like Picassa, so I have a link.

If you need a place to host the png file you can PM it to me and i will host it for you if you really need. Maybe the author can collect a gallery of icons or we can work on something

I put in my Google Picassa account to host.

If not yet considered, maybe we add a .PNG sections with the themes and wallpaper forums. Just a thought.

no - i've limited it to 6, each shortcut is a little application and each one needs seperate code, you can't just copy and paste multiple versions of an app.

try that url in a web browser - it doesn't work there either - add a www and it's fine...

if you read the website it says:

'Solution to have links to websites from your BlackBerry homescreen/desktop - one click launching of your 6 favourite sites without having to go through the browser bookmarks (involving several clicks and scrolls).'

if it doesn't work post a bug report or read the instructions again.

cheers,
jon

Yes, this is a "web shortcut" application. It gives you a shortcut on your Berry similar to having a shortcut on your computer desktop that opens a website.

jon,
One question I have (maybe a future enhancement request)...could there be anyway to specify which browser to use for the shortcut? My problem is one of my shortcuts is on our corporate intranet and I need the BlackBerry browser to launch. The other is on the internet and I'd rather use the AT&T browser. Does that make sense?

Version 2.1.2 is available at http://m.jonathanhfisher.co.uk/webshortcuts

Changes:

- You can now simply put your icons in the pictures/ directory on your sdcard or in the device store, images must be named in the form shortcut1.png and placed in the root of the pictures directory, ie: /pictures/shortcut1.png

The process the shortcut goes though is to first check the sdcard for the .png, if there's nothing there it checks the device store and if still nothing it reads the url set using the shortcut hub app and downloads it (so you can use either method)

- Should now handle being on a 4.1 device - custom application names will be ignored but icons will be set

- http:// should now be pre-populated in all url fields.

hmm, they're showing as 2.1.2 here... i've downloaded and installed ota and used some local .pngs to test the new functionality. might be a strange browser cache issue. you could also get some strange module messages - if you do be sure to sleect 'yes' instead of 'no' to overwrite the older code.

What's weird is that the last time I visited the OTA page, I downloaded all of the modules, so it's weird that only 2 would be cached. Both the version number the size were the old ones. I tried later on and all was fine. Strange.

Reloaded v2.1.2....Very smooth installation, right down to after each app installs and you click ok it goes right back to the list of apps so you can install the next one. This app is quite refined now and I have nothing negative to say. I have only one small (very small) suggestion for the next version. It would be convenient if when in the shortcut hub when you move the cursor down to the website fields if the cursor would automatically position to after the "http://". It's no big deal to move it over but it would smooth it out a little. Thanks for adding in the "http://" by the way!

This app is a joy to use. Thanks jfisher!

I am functioning okay with the previous revision. If I upgrade, do I have to put my info back into the icons? I am discriminating as to whether it is worth it to do it now

You won't gain much by upgrading if you've already got everything working from the last revision. If you reinstall for any reason, though, be sure to use the latest version. I had to reinstall after having to wipe my device, that's why I upgraded.

Thank you. While it may not apply this case, I know with the two html e-mail competitors if one does a minor fix, they are ready announce teh next upgrade.

Thanks for the heads up, I will monitor and upgrade when the change is more significant.

Something I noticed this morning: if there's not shortcutx.png file and no icon defined in the hub, the Loading Icon screen just keeps going and I cannot launch the shortcut.

Anyone else experiencing this?

make sure you completely close out of your browser before trying to access the web via shortcuts. It took me a while to figure this out. Also, I had the same problem with the icon looking for a download. That one took awhile too.

What is the string that will enable Web Shortcuts to see a pic on my sd card? When I put /pictures/shortcut1.png I get a prompt asking for a valid URL

Thanks

Forget it!!! I had my BB plugged into my laptop. Which means the program could not access the information on the card. Hopefully this will help others.

So what exactly is the procedure for storing (and referencing) a .png on the device? http://? Blank?

Thank you

instructions here: BlackBerry Web Shortcuts 2.1.2 and BlackBerry Web Shortcuts 2.1.0

you can either put a .png locally in your /pictures/ directly named shortcut1.png and the shortcut will pick it up automatically - or if you have an image online you can enter the address in the hub utility (in the format: 'http://mywebsite/myicon.png') and the first time you run the shortcut it'll download it.

you don't need to put anything if you're using a local image - leave the url for the icon blank - it'll get ignored anyway if there is a local file. as described here: BlackBerry Web Shortcuts 2.1.2
